Legacy report on the 1997 Uniform Building Code and the 2000 International Building Code
DIVISION: 03CONCRETE
Section: 03210Reinforcing Steel

Specific requirements are as follows, using notations in

Section 1911 of the UBC or Chapter 11 of the IBC:

ABCOT SHEARBAND

1. Minimum shear span (ln / d )is 2.

ABCOT INTERNATIONAL, INC.

SUITE 2031433 KING GEORGE HIGHWAY
SURREY, BRITISH COLUMBIA V4A 4Z5
CANADA

2. For shear spans (ln / d ) exceeding 5, Equations 11-3 or

11-5 in Section 1911.3 of the UBC or Chapter 11.3 of ACI
318-99 (IBC), and Equation 11-15-1 in Section 1911.5 of
the UBC or Equation 11-15 in Chapter 11.5 of ACI 318-99
(IBC), apply.

1.0 SUBJECT
Abcot Shearband.
2.0 DESCRIPTION
2.1

General:

Abcot Shearband is a punching shear reinforcement system

consisting of a continuous punched steel strip that is prebent
in the manufacturers plant into a shaped profile to fit over the
top of flexural reinforcement bars in concrete slabs.
Shearband increases the shear resistance of the slab and
replaces traditional stirrup reinforcement, drop panels or
column capitals required under the 1997 Uniform Building
Code (UBC) and the 2000 International Building Code
(IBC). Shearband is illustrated in Figure 1.
2.2

Materials:

Shearband shall be manufactured from steel complying with

either ASTM A 505-87 or equivalent ASTM standards that
meet or exceed requirements in ASTM A 505-87. In addition,
the Shearband material must satisfy the following mechanical
properties:
Minimum yield strength: 72,500 psi (500 MPa)
Minimum elongation: 11 percent
Shearband is available in the standard sizes indicated in
Table 1.
The Shearband strip horizontal elements have 0.197-inchdiameter (5.0 mm) holes punched along the center of its width
at 0.984 inch (25 mm) on center, to enhance anchorage in
concrete. The vertical elements have a curved deformation.
2.3

Design:

2.3.1 General: General requirements for shear resistance

design are presented in Section 1911 of the UBC or Chapter
11 of ACI 318-99 (IBC). Since Shearband is intended to
reinforce concrete slabs, special provisions in Section
1911.12 of the UBC or Chapter 11.12 of ACI 318-99 (IBC)
must be observed.

3. For shear spans (ln / d ) from 2 to 5, Equations 11-27, 1128 and 11-29 in Section 1911.8 of the UBC or Chapter
11.8 of ACI 318-99 (IBC) apply.
4. The Shearband strip net area, described in Table 1, is
used to compute effective shear reinforcement, Av.
5. The Shearband strip yield strength used for structural
design, fy, is a maximum of 60,000 psi (414 MPa).
6. The concrete compressive strength used for structural
design, fNc, is 3,000 to 5,000 psi (20.7 to 34.5 MPa).
2.4

Installation:

Installation must comply with Chapter 19 of the UBC or ACI

318-99 (IBC), and the approved plans. Shearband is
preformed to suit the main flexural reinforcement
arrangement, particularly the top reinforcement layer spacing.
The vertical legs of the Shearband are spaced in accordance
with the structural design and the requirements in the
applicable code. Shearband is secured into position with tie
wire attaching the horizontal legs of the Shearband to the top
supporting reinforcing bar layer. The minimum cover is as
specified in Section 1907.7 of the UBC or Chapter 7.7 of ACI
318-99 (IBC), but no less than 3/4 inch (19.1 mm). A typical
arrangement of Shearband is illustrated in Figure 2.
2.5

Special Inspection:

Continuous special inspection is required in accordance with

Section 1701.5.1 of the UBC or Section 1704.4 and Table
1704.4 of the IBC. The special inspector is responsible for
verifying identification of the Shearband and its condition,
positioning, clearances, and concrete cover.
2.6

Identification:

Shearband units are identified on packaging with the location

code keyed to project plans, part name, part number,
dimensions, manufacturers name (Abcot International, Inc.)
and address, and the evaluation report number (ER-5668).

3.0 EVIDENCE SUBMITTED

Data in accordance with the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for
Shear Reinforcement Systems (AC170), dated July 2000, and
a quality control manual.
4.0 FINDINGS
That the Abcot Shearband described in this report
complies with the 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC)
and the 2000 International Building Code (IBC), subject
to the following conditions:

4.1

The Shearband is designed and installed as shear

reinforcement in accordance with the UBC or IBC,
this report, and the manufacturers instructions.

4.2

Special inspection is provided in accordance with

Section 2.5 of this report.

This report is subject to re-examination in one year.
