SYNOPSIS
SWITCHING AND ROUTING course introduces students to the equipment, applications, and protocols in a small network. The course provides knowledge on routing
protocols such as Routing Information Protocol (RIP) and single-area Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) protocol which includes VLSM, VLANs and Dynamic Trunking
Protocol (DTP). Students also learn about the routing tables and Access Control Lists (ACLs). Students skills are developed through hands-on exercises in the
laboratory on configuration, installation and troubleshooting of a switched network.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to :
1.
discover the architecture, components, and operations of routers and switches in a small network. (C3, PLO1)
2.
perform the configuration of routers and switches for basic functionality. (P#, C3, PLO2, PLO1)
3.
demonstrate a proper troubleshooting procedure for routers and switches to resolve common routing issues in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks. (A3, P4,
PLO4,PLO2)

WEEK ( Duration )

INTRODUCTION TO SWITCHED NETWORK

TECHNOLOGY
This topic introduces students to the characteristics
and infrastructure of switched network technology.
BASIC ROUTING CONCEPT
This topic explains the principles of routing and
routing protocols. In addition, it covers on basic router
configuration and implementation of inter-VLAN
routing in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks.
DYNAMIC ROUTING PROTOCOLS
This topic describes the distance vector routing
protocol, and link-state protocol. The details include
explanation on single area OSPF; the characteristics,
routing tables and configuring single area OSPF in a
network. Comparison OSPFv2 and OSPFv3 is also
included.
ACCESS CONTROL LISTS (ACLs)
This topic describes traffic filtering, ACLs and
implementation of ACLs. Implementation of Network
Address Translation (NAT) for IPv4 is also applied in
context.
DYNAMIC HOST CONFIGURATION PROTOCOL
(DHCP)
This topic describes about DHCPv4 and covers the
procedure to configure the DHCP client and server.
