BIG TEN. BIG NEWS.

This weekends matchup between Michigan and Northwestern will feature the two s ngiest
defenses in the na on in terms of scoring defense. The Wildcats lead the country with 7.0
points against per game and are followed immediately by the Wolverines with 7.6 points
allowed per contest.
In all, seven Big Ten defenses rank among the top 25 teams na onally in scoring defense.
Wisconsin follows closely behind Northwestern and Michigan in fourth with 9.6 points allowed
per game, while Ohio State, Iowa, Penn State and Illinois have each allowed fewer than 18 points
per contest to rank among the top 25.
Wisconsin linebacker Joe Schobert leads the na on with 9.0 sacks this season, averaging
1.80 per game. He also leads the country in tackles for loss with 13.0 for 82 yards and is ed
for the na onal lead with four forced fumbles.
Ohio State added to its nation-leading winning streak with its victory over Indiana on
Saturday, marking the Buckeyes 18th straight triumph. Michigan State earned its ninth consecutive win on Saturday, which ranks as the fourth-longest active winning streak in the
Football Bowl Subdivision.
Joining the Spartans and Buckeyes with 5-0 marks are Iowa and Northwestern. The Buckeyes
last started 5-0 in 2013, the Wildcats are 5-0 for the first time since 2012, the Spartans last
opened the season 5-0 in 2010 and the Hawkeyes are off to their best start since 2009. All four
schools have moved to within one win of securing bowl eligibility.
With his 120th win as the head coach of Iowa on Saturday, Kirk Ferentz moved into sole possession of ninth place in overall wins at a conference school. Ferentz 120th victory surpassed former
Wisconsin head coach Barry Alvarez, who won 119 games from 1990-2014. Former Michigan
head coach Lloyd Carr is eighth on the list with 122 career victories.

program presents 18 individual trophies in addition to
the Big Ten Championship trophy, bearing the names of
one or two former standouts. The distinguished names

Seventeen of the honors will be awarded immediately
following the regular season, including awards for the
best quarterback, running back, receiver, tight end,

position awards features the names of two former players.
The Big Ten will also continue to honor the conferences
top coaches, offensive and defensive players and linemen and freshmen with end-of-year trophies. Big Ten
coaches have the opportunity to claim two awards.
Media voters will select the Dave McClain Coach of the
Year, which has been awarded since 1972, while coaches vote for the Hayes-Schembechler Coach of the Year

ranked highest in the final poll shall be the representa ve to the College
Football Playo, unless the other team is ranked within five or fewer places
of the higher ranked team. In this case, the head-to-head results of the two
teams shall determine the conferences representa ve.
