RAG ACTIVE LIVING FOR THE OVER 50'S

THE AUTUMN PROGRAMME
Sue Russell writes:

Talk and Tea Sessions

These resume in October when Julian Pady of Goren Farm
near Stockland will talk about the restoration of his 50 acre
farm, and his wild flower meadows where he grows dozens of
varieties of wild flowers. As The Drift goes to press we are
awaiting confirmation of the date which will be either the
14th or 21st. The confirmed date will be posted outside
Tatworth Memorial Hall so watch out for the posters and
come along for a magical afternoon.
On November 11th we will welcome Mr and Mrs Pryer who will
talk about Canal Boats and canal art - another fascinating
afternoon.
Talk & Tea sessions begin at 2pm and finish at about 4pm
with tea and Wendy's cakes in the Brewer Room at TMH. No
need to book - just come along and be entertained for free!
More information from Sue on 220339.

T&F MOVIES - FILMS FOR THE AUTUMN

By the time this edition of The Drift hits the streets our
autumn programme of films will be under way. Here is the
programme for the rest of the year which we think will have
wide appeal, so please come along - no booking necessary.
Films are quite expensive to hire for public viewing and any
small profits we make go towards the running costs of the
Memorial Hall. So as well as having an enjoyable evening out
you will be supporting a good local cause and still be home at
a reasonable hour.

Friday 23rd October: "A Little Chaos" (cert12A)

A highly enjoyable costume drama set at Versailles during the

reign of Louis XIV starring Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman who
also directs. They collaborate with The Sun King`s garden
designer over one of his more lavish projects with enjoyable
and charming results. (Titchmarsh and co. would have
thrown in the towel!)

Friday 27th November: "Dark Horse" (cert PG)

A rags-to-riches documentary about the experiences of a poor
Welsh mining community who club together to buy a
racehorse. A lovely uplifting film which earned widespread
praise from the critics.

Issue 71
COMMUNITY MINI BUS SCHEME UPDATE
Robin Munday, writes:
Survey forms looking to establishing need/support for a
scheme were distributed in Tatworth & Forton with the last
issue of The Drift. Copies were distributed in the adjoining
villages via their newsletters and volunteers. In total some
1800 forms were circulated.
As yet those returned have not been analysed but it is fair to
say that the number returned in Tatworth & Forton by the
closing date was disappointing, taking into consideration the
constant adverse comment regarding the National schedule
service. However, once an analysis has been completed the
position will be that much clearer.
In the meantime I have been looking at Mini Bus Schemes run
by villages in other areas. One in particular would seem to
be suitable for this area if we were to use it as a basis for any
scheme that we are subsequently able to introduce.
A few details are as follows:
On three days a week trips are made to three
different shopping centres. Once a month a fourth
destination can also be available
The stop time allowed at each centre is between two
and two and a half hours.
Other shorter trips can be made by arrangement.
There is a flat rate charge per person of 3 for a
return shopping journey.
The bus can also be available for hire by local groups
outside of these trip times.
A rental charge for these groups is 65 for a morning,
afternoon or evening hire.
This charge includes fuel, insurance and a journey of
up to 100kms.
Beyond 100kms an additional charge of 5 per 20 kms
would apply.
Within the survey forms that I have looked at I cannot see any
interest from our clubs but I would hope that this hire facility
would be of interest to them if available.
Once the forms returned have been analysed I will report
again giving the results, and give an indication as to whether
any scheme has sufficient support to go ahead.

Friday 11th December: "Mr. Holmes" (cert PG)

A magnificent performance from Ian McKellen as the ageing

Sherlock. With his memory beginning to fade he is faced with
one long-standing riddle which has always eluded him. An
elegant and absorbing British film.
This will be our "Christmas Special" with mulled wine and
mince pies available.
Films start at 8pm, doors open 7.15. Bar and Raffle as usual,
and tickets still only 4!!!

TURPIN ON THE MOVE

Councillor Reports on Buses and Trains, and Appeals
for Recollections
Andrew Turpin writes:
My regular contact for our local number 30 First Buses Service
has been the Regional Customer Service Manager.
Communications with First Buses have not been made easier
by her being made redundant. Sadly, her replacement will
now be based in Norwich. Her responsibilities will be for the
South West, Wales, the South East and the Midlands!!

The ongoing bus campaign

The reduction of our local service from hourly to every 90
minutes is causing enormous disruption and inconvenience to
those who depend on buses. With no evening or Sunday
service, this adds to our sense of isolation. But campaigns do
work! You may remember in the past, that with a joint survey
of the whole Chard and District locality including Tatworth and
Forton, we succeeded in getting a Sunday bus service. Despite
its success and popularity we lost it with the cut-backs. I am
now in touch with bus managers at Stagecoach South West to
see if we can have an hourly link bus running from Chard,
through Tatworth and on to Axminster. This would also link
with the service 99 to Taunton and Yeovil.

Opening our local train station

Many more local councillors and politicians are joining the reopening our local station campaign. I hope to share more in
the next edition of The Drift .

From earlier days .. life in the Parish - recollections,

memories, anecdotes, stories handed down from
relatives.

I have been fascinated by stories from local residents about

life here in the past. These are real treasures. I think we
need to record them. If you would like to share some stories,
could you contact me? Examples may include stories about
our railway and stations, the local dairies, the milk factory,
the bakery, the South Chard Corn Mill, the local bus service,
the state of our roads!

TATWORTH WOMENS INSTITUTE

Report from the meeting held on 20th August 2015:

Angela welcomed 4 visitors who may be interested in joining.

Minutes of the last meeting, which had already been
circulated, were agreed and signed.
MATTERS ARISING: Several people have already agreed to
enter items to represent Tatworth at the forthcoming Craft
Exhibition but more entries would be welcome. Angela gave a
brief report of her visit to the AGM. Jessica Ward will take
over as Events Organiser, assisted by Jane Grant. Visits to the
Octagon Theatre to see Adam Hanson in October and the
Military Wives concert in January were suggested.
A
Suggestion Box was on the table and will be available at every
meeting from now on. Names and photos of women for
nomination as Trustees were on display and members were
asked to vote.
CORRESPONDENCE: More acceptances and refusals to the
Party invitation have been received. Several invitations from
neighbouring WIs to send members to cream teas were read
out and names taken. More information about accessing the
Moodle was available, and Denman are holding a free PDSA
day on 29th October.
In October we will have an evening meal at the Golden
Fleece. Donations for the Shoe Box Appeal for the YMCA will
be collected next month. Rosemary Heeks reported a very
good season for Croquet which will end on 24th August.
Kerling etc. in the hall will start on 17th September. A subcommittee for the Party has been formed and names of people

Issue 71 The DRIFT

volunteering to bring food were taken.

Our speaker was Kevin Balding from the Free Wheelers, a
charity based in Devon who deliver medicine, blood and other
items to hospitals and patients homes usually by motor bike.
There are Free Wheeler groups covering most of the country,
but the Devon group was started by Daniel Lavery in 2009
after his wife gave birth while in Ireland. After a difficult
delivery, she was saved by the emergency delivery of blood for
a transfusion. They now have 11 blood bikes and do about 8
9 jobs a day. Last year they covered about 60,500 miles.
There are 70 people in the team, 40 of whom are volunteer
riders and the rest are support workers. Sometimes they have
to refuse jobs, like the time they were asked to deliver a pair
of crutches (on a bike?) and another time a commode!
Running costs are between 130,000 and 150,000 a year and
Kevin explained what they do to raise funds. The NHS has its
own courier service but it only operates Monday to Friday from
9 to 5, so the Free Wheelers cover the rest of the time. They
go out in all weathers up and down the Devon lanes and do a
wonderful job but a lot of the public havent heard of them.

Report from the meeting held on 17th September

2015:
Jane Grant chaired the meeting in Angelas absence. She
welcomed 4 new members: Cara, Eileen, Carol and Leanne.
Sue Cheese gave details of forthcoming lunches and collected
money for the trips to hear the Military Wives and Adam
Henson at the Octagon Theatre Yeovil.
On December 11th there is a visit to Cothelstone Manor, a 12th
century listed manor house north of Taunton. There will be a
tour round the house and the church in the grounds with the
history of the buildings. We will then be given a delicious
sounding tea with sandwiches, honey and mustard sausages
and cakes, followed by the singing of carols round the
Christmas tree in front of a roaring fire. Sounds good doesnt
it? This will be a half-day trip open to husbands and friends.
The cost is 14.50 for the tour of the house and tea, plus
6.50 for the coach (to include the drivers tip).
A coach will be available for the Wells Carol Service in
December. Chard WIs party at which we are helping has
changed venue from the Guildhall and will now be held in the
hall behind the Catholic Church near the crossroads. Chard
will have a short entertainment after their party and asked if
anyone would volunteer to sing in their choir no hands went
up! The Carol Service for the local WI groups will be on
December 3rd at 2.30 in the Baptist Church in Holyrood
Street, Chard. We need some more teapots for our Centenary
Party, preferably pretty floral ones, so please contact Angela
Long if you can help. Thanks to everyone who has offered to
help with food for the party, weve had more offers than we
need and those people making food have been informed. A
collection was made for the shoe boxes we are filling for
Yeovil and Bridgwater YMCA to help young people living on
their own. Rather than everyone perhaps buying similar
items, we felt it better to collect money and then one or two
of us could go and buy what was needed to fill the boxes.
The SCFWI Annual meeting is to be held on 1st November and
a financial report was available. A ballot was held of the 6
people attending to see who would be our delegate and who
would have the free ticket. A poster was shown about the
Craft and Vintage Fair on Saturday October 10th at West
Monkton village hall, and there is to be a History of Taunton
in Needlework exhibition at Wilton Lodge. Jane proposed a
visit to Farrs near Beaminster for our summer outing next June
and this was agreed. A tour round the house by the owner and
a talk about the furniture he makes followed by afternoon tea
will cost 12.50.
Our next monthly meeting is October 15th when the talk will
be Wills, Probate & Power of Attorney.

Kitchen/vegetable gardens need a very thorough clear-out to

give the soil a rest. Dig them over well, and remember to
rotate the crops you intend to grow next year to prevent
pathogens getting comfortable.
You can reduce mowing frequency now and allow grass a little
more height over winter to give it some strength. If you can,
scarify your lawn by removing as much thatch as possible
personally, I have found that it makes an enormous difference
to the look of the lawn as it improves drainage and allows air
in to the roots!
Cut back as much dead matter as possible, and give your paths
a good sweep. Get a pile ready for burning on bonfire night,
but please dont forget the wildlife, and make sure there are
no hedgehogs making their winter home in that cosy pile of
waste matter.
Can we all provide a potential hedgehog home as we need to
do all we can to support these handy slug eaters that have
declined by nearly 90%.

TATWORTH & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL

SOCIETY
Ken Johnson, chairman, writes:
Saturday 29th September 2015 featured our 55th Annual Open
Show. The standard of entries was again high although certain
classes in the Vegetable and Fruit Sections had been effected
by the unpredictable weather conditions experienced this
year. It was encouraging to note increases in the number of
new exhibitors and children's entries.
The Show was opened by John Cotton, a long standing
member of the Society, and the awards were presented by the
Chairman - Ken Johnson. The M.J. Jeanes Cup for the Best
Exhibit in the Show was awarded to Sue Cheese for her
outstanding cross-stitch portrait of a 'Flower Lady'. The post
Show auction of produce, etc. was again conducted by
Councillor Jill Shortland.
Thanks are extended to all who helped in promoting and
setting up The Show, to all exhibitors and to all who supported
by attending on the day - 'Well Done' to all.
The first meeting of the Autumn season will be held in
Tatworth Memorial at 19.30 on Thursday 8th October 2015
when the speaker will be Martin Young and the topic will be
'Echinacea and Rudebeckia' with emphasis on bees and
butterflies. There is a charge for non members of 2.00.

THE OCTOBER GARDENER

Tony Arnold ACIHort writes:
The October gardener has to sadly contend with the closing of
the season but must also be able to maintain a positive
approach to the coming year. Here are some groups of jobs to
do at this time:

Preparing for Winter

We all notice that temperatures are starting to drop at this
time of year. Now is the time to move those tender plants to
somewhere with a little more shelter. If you do not own a
greenhouse then a conservatory or porch are also ideal.
If you have outside containers that are too big to move, try
wrapping them in bubble wrap or mulch around the plant for
protection.
Reduce watering now, as although many plants can withstand
the cold, they do not like to be frozen, any more than we do!
Dont forget to collect up those fallen leaves, hopefully when
they are not too wet. Put them into black sacks, poke a few
holes in the sacks to allow air in and moisture to escape,
loosely tie the sacks and in the spring you should have some
good leaf mould to nourish your gardens. Leaf mould is one of
the best soil improvers.

Getting ready for Spring

Cut back climbers. Divide perennials. Lift dahlias and store

the tubers upside down in a cool dry wooden tray.
Now is the time for planting shrubs and trees while the soil is
still warm and moisture can still be taken up.
Plant new hardy herbaceous perennials and bare root plants.
Plant spring bulbs now - it will lift your spirits enormously
when those first spring flowers appear.
Look out for some hardy cyclamen in the garden centres.
These relatively tough little plants look good nestling under
trees. They will withstand some nasty weather and reproduce
quite rapidly. A pick-me up at this time of year when many
other plants are bidding us a fond winter farewell.
Sit back in your armchair with a cup of tea and those
gardening catalogues and dream of a better summer to come
hopefully next year!

TATWORTH WIVES GROUP

Hester Down writes:
At our meeting on 3rd September our speaker was Linda Vijeh
whose talk entitled Beds I have Slept In was about her time
working as a Restaurant and Hotel Inspector for the
Automobile Association (AA). This involved staying at hotels to
sample what they had to offer and applying criteria to menus,
rooms, hygiene standards etc to give each hotel a star rating.
She explained how easy it was to put on weight, just by doing
her job, but also what fun it was, and talked about the
interesting characters she met. She also spoke to us about the
difficulties of trying to ensure her rle remained undetected,
as, if the management suspected she was an inspector, they
would try to impress her to improve their rating, or even place
difficulties in her way to obscure the true picture. Sometimes
she travelled with her husband to put them off the scent.
She inspected a wide range of hotels from very large ones to
small family hotels, but her favourites were the smaller hotels
which had to please their customers to survive and where she
was able to get to know the owners well.
The Shrubbery Hotel, Ilminster and the Lordsleaze Hotel,
Chard, were amongst local hotels Linda visited during her time
as an AA Inspector. She now does consultancy work.
Our next meeting will be at Tatworth Church Rooms on
Thursday 1st October when our speaker will be Peter Bennett,
who will talk about Diet and Behaviour.

TATWORTH FLOWER CLUB

Rosemary Walton writes:
Our chairman welcomed members, friends and local flower
clubs to our evening in September. We were in the company
of Tracey Griffin, a national demonstrator from Hampshire
whose designs were very eye-catching. Her ten designs were
varied in their dimensions and shape, and her containers also
varied. The accessories she used she had made herself. A
very clever young lady.
Her flowers were beautiful, many had an exotic flavour, and
the roses she used, along with many other flowers, were
delightful in colour and together with lovely foliage she used
certainly transformed the stage. Our president gave the very
well deserved vote of thanks - thanking Tracey for a very
enjoyable evening.
Our next meeting is the Annual General Meeting to be held at
Tatworth Memorial Hall in Thursday 1st October at 2pm. We
invite all members and friends to join us, and after the close
of business we shall be served a cream tea. It is very
important for the club to be well supported please do try to
