Course Description:
Economics 188 is uniquely designed to provide Business Economics Majors with
key knowledge and practical skills used in the real world that compliments
traditional academics. This class is for students who want to maximize interview
skills, communication and presentation skills and strengthen resume building.
Career paths in the business profession will be covered in various aspects to
broaden students knowledge of career opportunities. The course will also cover
the current business environment, financial markets, economy, unemployment,
banking crises, market updates and all related business topics. This course has
been specifically tailored to benefit the business student and build a practical
foundation to use in the students professional future, while also maximizing
awareness of career resources at UCLA.
Topics will include but not limited to:

Resume Workshop (tools and strategies to differentiate


yourself), the future of resumes (Websites and portfolios)

Interview Workshop (Pre and post interview) how to


prepare and tell your story while differentiating yourself and showing
passion. How to add value versus your peers
Follow your passion (how to find the career thats right
for you)
Networking (Social and Internet) How to sell yourself
(elevator speech)
Wall Street Workshop/ Financial careers
Marketing / Sales Careers
Ethics, communication skills and presentation skills
International Study Abroad
Internships / Student organizations, community service
and various certifications (CPA, CFA, CFP, etc.)
Real Estate Careers / How to buy Real Estate
Personal Finance / Credit scores, saving and retirement
plans
Career Fairs / how to differentiate yourself and tell your
story.

Assignments: Assignments are specifically designed to increase awareness of


UCLA resources, while improving essential skills and knowledge that will be
required during and after your UCLA experience. In addition, they will specifically

About the Instructor: Steve Ross is a retired Lead Portfolio Manager from Nicholas
Applegate Asset Management. Steve was not only responsible for all the stock
selection and research for billions in U.S. stocks, but also a Partner and Executive
Committee member. Steve has been on CNNfn, Investors Business Daily, USA
Today and many other financial publications. Steve has also worked for BlackRock,
Merrill Lynch, and currently works at U.S. Trust as a Market Investment Director
overseeing $1B. He has over 25 years of investment experience in many fields
including portfolio management, sales, marketing, executive leadership and
others. In addition, Steve was Executive in Residence for the College of Business
at SDSU for 6 years where he developed a similar class with great success.
