TERRY FOX RUN last Sunday was the 35th annual run.

When Terry Fox came through Ottawa on his

historic journey I was overwhelmed by what he was doing as my mother had died of bone cancer in her
leg just a few years earlier. As Mayor of Kanata, I was able to name the major road that was just being
planned as Terry Fox Drive. I pointed out to the participants how much our road reflected Terrys run.
Terry Fox Drive passes agricultural fields, homes, the Trans-Canada Trail (symbolizing his journey across
the country), a river, a major highway, the town centre, wetlands, the South March Highlands (part of the
Canadian Shield that stretches across Ontario) and a business park. Terry saw all of these on his way, so
our road is a fitting tribute to him. Thank you to the runners, walkers and volunteers who over the years
have raised funds to fight cancer to help Terry reach his dream. I only wish it had been in time for him.

AWARD Last week I was presented with a certificate and pin by MPP Lou Rinaldi, for serving more
than 25 years in municipal office. On Wednesday, at City Council, Mayor Jim Watson also recognized me
for this service. It continues to be an honour and privilege to represent Kanata residents. I have had the
incredible opportunity of being involved in the creation of a new City over a 46 year period, 26 of those in
elected office 7 years on March Township Council, 10 years on Kanata City Council, 9 years as
Regional Councillor (when I was Reeve and Mayor) and I am now in my 9 th year as Councillor in the City
of Ottawa. I have seen a lot of changes and I am proud of our community and the people who live and
work here.

SYRIA REFUGEES I have spoken to many individuals on what can be done to sponsor families to
locate in our community. Ill be holding a meeting in October to bring together those experienced in
sponsoring families with others willing to help. Details are to follow.

EXPO 55 Thank you to all who attended, volunteers, Mlacak staff, and those who provided
refreshments and door prizes at the EXPO 55+ event last Friday. The information provided by 40 nonprofit organizations was interesting and helpful to all. A special thanks to my staff for organizing the event.
