The GIS (Geographical Information System) is an information system designed to work with
data referenced by spatial/geographical coordinates. In other words, GIS is both a database
system with specific capabilities for spatially referenced data as well as a set of operations for
working with the data. It may also be considered as a higher-order map or an intelligent map
on which computer analysis can be performed.
The GIS has been defined in many ways by many people. One of the ways it has been
defined is: Geographic information system is a systematic integration of computer hardware,
software and spatial data, for capturing, storing, displaying, updating, manipulating and
analyzing in order to solve complex management problems.
S. Aronoff in 1989, defined GIS as : A computer based system that provides four sets of
capabilities to handle georeferenced data : data input, data management (data storage and
retrieval), manipulation and analysis, and data output.
