Statement of Purpose

The document discusses the author's interest and experience in engineering. As a competitive swimmer in school with an interest in how technology measures race times, the author studied electrical engineering in college. They developed a special interest in embedded systems and enjoyed labs that combined software and hardware applications. After graduating, the author worked as a project engineer where they saw the importance of software's role in industry. They now want to pursue a master's degree in computer engineering to further their understanding of the interaction between hardware and software through research.

Since I was a kid I was always fond of sports and I have had a fair share of

participation myself in competitive swimming, what fascinates me the most is although

the difference between the athletes are faction of a second, we always have a unbiased
result of the race, the time clocked by the athletes are recorded using a instrument
which displays on a huge screen the moment race is finished. This use of technology
in the field of sports has always provoked my curiosity in the field of engineering
After high-school, I got an admit in a well reputed engineering college, Dr Ambedkar
Institute of Technology in Bangalore. Here, I could pursue my foundation courses
where I was introduced to critical fundamental concepts of electrical engineering. I
was introduced to subjects like Analog Electronics and Networks which I thoroughly
enjoyed. Being a practical person, I gave a lot of attention to labs where I learnt the
most.
During this bachelors degree, I developed a special interest in hybrid solutions. I
happened to choose embedded systems and operating systems which are a fusion of
software and hardware as my elective. I was amazed by their applications and how it
has changed lives throughout the globe: be it in travel, banking, healthcare or even a
simple device like the calculator - applied engineering can be seen everywhere. A
course in C programming during my first semester gave an insight into the computing
paradigm. In particular, a simple program to read keyboard characters, opened my
eyes to computing and its logical implementation.
Just as in academics, I am equally passionate about sports. My parents motivated me
to take my sports career as a swimmer to the national level. I have represented my
state in several national swim meets. Being a sports-person, I have learnt to strive for
success and overcome any hurdles or setbacks with a positive, confident attitude. In
2010, I beat the national record in 200m butterfly stroke at XXX event. This success
compelled me to focus on sports throughout my bachelors course.
Although I managed to just squeeze through my bachelors degree due to sports, there
came a point when I had to make a decision. I chose to follow a path into the technical
world. After graduation, I worked as a project engineer in Bangalore Electricity Supply
Company Ltd, Bangalore. The exposure to an industrial setting proved to be
challenging as well as enjoyable. I was involved in data management, transaction

processing, out sourcing and detailed fact finding on energy related activities. While
working here, I realized the importance of softwares role in industry which led me to
ponder about intricacies of the synchronization between hardware and software
environments.
As a result, I wanted to know more about the interaction of hardware and software.
This made me realize that I need more knowledge and expertise in this domain. So, I
decided to apply for a masters program in Computer Engineering. I found that X
University has great opportunities to learn and explore about embedded systems. The
works of prof X and prof Y in the field of Z caught my interest. Also, I found that X
Universitys Lab in [e.g.Embedded Systems] research to be admirable. Given an
opportunity in your prestigious institution, I would strive to perform my best and keep
up with universitys expectations.

1st para to be changed. I feel the flow of sop is not good. Can I add I don ve any
backlogs throughout my BE.. I also want to add I am interested in research
somewhere in the sop..
