Structural Design Offshore

This document discusses the design of offshore structure foundations. It begins with an overview of different offshore structure types and their foundation systems, including deep foundations using piles and shallow foundations using gravity-based structures or jack-ups. The lecture then focuses on pile foundation design, including modeling pile-soil interaction, calculating pile capacity from axial and lateral soil resistance, considering group effects, and checking pile stresses. Examples are provided to demonstrate calculating pile dimensions, reaction forces, and capacity. The goal is for students to understand offshore structure foundation systems and how to properly design pile foundations.

Pile Group Effects

For pile or conductor spacing less

than eight (8) diameters, group
effects may have to be evaluated

For piles embedded in clays, the

group capacity may be less than a
single isolated pile capacity multiplied
by the number of piles in the group

For p
piles embedded in sands the
group capacity may be higher than
the sum of the capacities in the
isolated piles

Pile group would normally experience

greater lateral deflection than that of
a single pile under the average pile
load of the corresponding group
