of off-road vehicles

A prize possession that has
been around for as long as the
Pinelands have existed will be undergoing restrictions when the
New Jersey Park Services Motorized Action Plan is implemented.
The goal of the organization is
to protect the environment and
encourage responsible use of offroad vehicles in Wharton State
Forest, which is by far the largest
unit in the State Park System.
The plan consists of a map that
outlines nearly 225 miles of roads
and trails that are open to motorized vehicles, and a brochure that
explains the long-term damage
that can be caused by improper
off-roading.
The MAP program will ensure continued access to these
features while educating the public and making sure the regions
sensitive ecology is protected,
said Richard Boornazian, the Department of Environmental Protections assistant commissioner

renovations, the Indian Mills
Home and School Association
wants to officially welcome everyone back.
The organization is proud to
announce the return of the Welcome Back Picnic for another
year after last years initial attempt was successful.
The second annual Welcome
Back Picnic will be held at Indian
Mills Memorial School on Friday,
Sept. 11 from 4-7 p.m.
We had tremendous success
last year with parents and children coming back. We welcomed
back the community with an
event in which everyone got to see
each other for the first time all

The Indian Mills Home and
School Association is a highly en-

ergetic, motivated, team-oriented

organization that encourages volunteerism

fundraising and meaningful
events.
The overall goal of the group is
to promote learning experiences,
strengthen communication between home and school, and enhance the educational experience
of every child in the Shamong
Township School District.
Any parents and staff are eligible and encouraged to become
HSA members. All members in
good standing have voting rights
for the wish list items on the
agenda if in attendance at the
HSAs general public meetings.

Car seat safety law is in effect

much we pay in taxes, whether we get
that promotion, whether we can take
that vacation and whether the last season of True Detective was absolutely horrible or sneakily impressive.
The new child car seat law that went
into effect last week is the perfect example of this. Among everything else
that is going on in our world and
among some pretty questionable decisions they sometimes make our
elected officials are still looking out
for our childrens safety.
Starting last Tuesday, stricter rules
went into effect for car seats, and these
rules adhere to the American Academy of Pediatrics list of recommenda-

Among the new rules:
Children under 2 who weigh less
than 30 pounds must be secured in a
rear-facing seat equipped with a fivepoint harness.
Children 2-4 who weigh up to 40
pounds can be either in a rear- or
front-facing seat.
Children 4-8 who are less than 57
inches tall must be in a forward-facing
seat or a booster seat.
Children between 8 and 17 must

wear seat belts.

Some of these changes are going to
cost parents extra money, as they will
require the purchase of new car seats,
and will require children to be in them
for longer than before.
But thats OK. There should be no
expense spared when dealing with
child safety.
The states official website says auto
crashes are the leading cause of death
for children 6 and older, and using a
car seat properly is one of the simplest and most effective methods available to protect them.
So spend whatever it takes to keep
your children safe on the road. And if
you need help installing the seats
properly, call the local police department. Safety is No. 1.

school community together and have a
nice family evening where we can all gather as one, Caloiaro said.
This years picnic will have a few additions from last year.
Along with the hot dogs, hamburgers,
watermelon, water ice and dunk tank that
are paid for through the general funding of
the association, the children will also have
some added company.
Last year, the HSA had two separate picnics at the different schools, but this year
there will be one collaborative gathering at
the Memorial School everyone from the
district will be invited to.
This made it a lot easier for the execu-

tive board to plan, Caloiaro said. It was a

lot of work last year, but it ended up being
100 percent worth it.
The students will also likely have more
guests, as an invitation has been extended
to the Indian Mills Fire Company and EMS
group.
Caloiaro thought it would be fitting to
have the township fire and EMS squads in
attendance since it will be held on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept.
11.
We will also be charging $1 for three
throws at the dunk tank to raise money for
the fire and EMS groups, as well as having
donation jars around the picnic for the fire
and EMS donations, Caloiaro said.
Another change to this years picnic will
be the design of the t-shirt that is being
sold.
After last years creative got spirit
shirts that mimicked the popular got
milk advertisement were a hit, the HSA

developed a new logo for this year.

The shirts will come in green and pink
and will read I M BRAVE.
The I M stands for Indian Mills and the
BRAVE has always been our mascot at the
school and symbolizes us as a community
as a whole, Caloiaro said.
The proceeds from the green t-shirts will
be donated to the Indian Mills fire and
EMS group, and the proceeds from the
pink t-shirts will be donated to the Susan
G. Komen Foundation. The shirts cost $10.
This foundation is the only one that addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts
such as research, community health, global outreach and public policy initiatives to
make the biggest impact against this disease.
We found it fitting because breast cancer victims and survivors and the fire and
EMS personnel symbolize the ultimate

County library systems event underway

Halloween may still be about
two months away, but the Burlington County Librarys annual costume swap drop-off starts sooner
than later.
The event ties into National
Costume Swap Day, which helps
families go green as well as
save a little money by allowing
them to trade old Halloween costumes with other parents instead
of having to buy new ones.
Starting Sept. 3, families can
drop off their childrens former,
gently used Halloween costumes
at
the
Evesham
Library,
Pinelands Library, Pemberton Library, Bordentown Library or

county library in Westampton.

For every costume a family donates, it will in return receive one
costume swap ticket. Then, a
month later on Saturday Oct. 3
from 10 a.m. 2 p.m., families can
visit any one of the participating
libraries and trade their ticket or
tickets for any of the costumes
donated by another family.
Each family who participates
will be able to get a new Halloween costume for their child or
children without having to spend
additional money, and those families gain the satisfaction of knowing they did their part in helping

state Department of Environmental Protection.
We are pleased with DEPs
continued actions to address activities that result in negative impacts to Pinelands resources,
said Nancy Wittenberg, the executive director of the Pinelands
Commission.
Park Services will be more
clearly marking routes that are
not intended for vehicles but are
meant for the enjoyment of those
who are traveling on foot, bicycle
or horseback.
However, for those who have
limited mobility such as longtime Shamong resident Kerri
Lyons, this plan will essentially
be negating them from enjoying
something they have relished for
as long as they can remember, unless the DEP is able to provide
special permits to those with disabilities.
At last weeks Shamong Township Committee meeting, Park
Services was in attendance to
highlight the reasons for implementing this plan and to take all
questions and comments.
There are five main objectives
that have been set out to be accomplished by enforcing the Motorized Action Plan.
Park Services will be looking to
identify routes that are open for
motorized access and keep motorized vehicles on these approved,
designated routes.
The group has walked every
road and trail, and has each point
marked and put into a database
using GPS technology.
Nothing is being closed. No
access is in any way hampered
for hikers or equestrians, said
Thomas C. Keck Jr., superintendent of the State Park Service
southern region.

Another objective of the plan is

to coordinate emergency response for those called upon to
fight a forest fire or to tend to a
simple 9-1-1 call.
Its impetrative for first responders to be able to get to the
victim or where the problem is
and take care of it without putting themselves in further jeopardy or their equipment in
harms way, Keck said.
Focusing maintenance efforts
on these designated routes is an
additional emphasis of the plan.
Weve invited people to utilize
a route, now theres a responsibility to keep those people safe,
Keck said.
Lastly, the plan was created to
help increase the education and
enforcement of Wharton State
Forest while protecting culturally
significant sites.
There are many historical
sites, natural resources and
threatened or endangered plant
and animal species in this forest.
When the public was given the
chance to voice their opinions,
there were very few supporters of
the plan. Many folks voiced displeasure with these changes.
However, representatives from
the Park Services group obliged
that this is a process that will take
time to iron out and will not be
settled overnight.
Mayor Kenneth Long and the
township committee stated they
brought the representatives in to
educate the township on the action plan and to take time to listen to what the residents had to
say before the committee jumped
to any conclusions.
While the Motorized Access
Plan will promote responsible
recreation, many argued the
handful of examples of irresponsible ORV use that has damaged
the environment is a small fraction of how the majority of people use the forest and therefore
should not call for such drastic
measures.
Many also argued that a mere
sign would not dissuade these
folks who have been off-roading

recklessly for so long, so the plan

would not be effective.
The DEP alluded to how crucial enforcement will be in this
process, and stated the park police will step up its game and
make the MAP work.
Shamong resident Hugh Macdonald owns a horse farm and is a
part of the New Jersey Trail Ride
Association that has hosted rides
in Wharton State Forest for more
than 50 years.
The group uses motor vehicles
to mark the trail, to unmark the
trail and to use an ambulance to
go back and forth if a rider gets
thrown. This plan will prevent
the majority of these rides from
taking place.
Township residents such as
John Bryans were cautiously optimistic about the plan in the
sense that it may be a step in the
right direction as far as something finally being done about the
damage being caused by these vehicles before it is too late.
If we dont start somewhere,
eventually we wont have a Pine
Barrens to protect, Bryans said.
Sooner or later, the fragmentation is going to destroy the forest,
and future generations wont
have it to appreciate.
Wharton State Forest Superintendent Rob Auermuller and a
team of volunteers have already
begun posting No Motorized Vehicles signs on many of the forest sand roads that have been
open to traffic for decades.

east of Hammonton, and at the
Atsion Recreation Area, located
off Route 206 in Shamong.

The idea to hold a swap in the
Burlington County Library System started about five years ago
at the Pinelands Library with
youth services librarian Danielle
Haubrich.
In the past, Haubrich had been
speaking with a parent about how
expensive Halloween costumes
were becoming and how a swap at
the end of the year would benefit
families, so Haubrich decided to
try the idea at the library.
Its a great way to celebrate a
green Halloween and save a little
money this year, Haubrich said.
Haubrich said the first event
was a success and had great feedback from parents, so it continued and has now spread to five of
the BCLS branches for this years
event.
The parents are happy to be
able to get some use out of their

childrens old costumes that

would otherwise just be sitting in
a drawer or box, and they also get
something new without spending
any money, so it works well both
ways.
Costume drop-offs will be accepted at the participating
branches up to the day of the
swap on Oct. 3.
According to the rules of the
swap, the costumes dropped off
must be in good condition and
must be appropriate for ages infant to teenager.
The libraries also remind families that the costumes taken from
the swap do not necessarily have
to be used for Halloween, as many
children enjoy wearing costumes
during dress-up and playtime allyear round.
Also, no costume donated to
the costume swap will go to
waste. As in previous years, costumes that remain after the swap
will be stored and saved for the
following years swap.
