Haddonfield Memorial High
School has been known to be
named a top school on many a
list.
On Aug. 19, Newsweek magazine released its annual list of the
top 500 high schools in the United
States. Once again, HMHS has received a high ranking, as it was
named No. 84 of Americas Top
High Schools by Newsweek, and
the No. 1 ranked public high
school in South Jersey.
Were very proud as a school
district to be ranked this high by
Newsweek, and we truly believe it
is a community effort teachers,
administrators, guidance counselors, students, volunteers, parents and all community members. I think that is a unique dynamic that we have in Haddonfield that is reflective in regard to
our high academic success, outstanding athletic program and
our unbelievable performing arts

A Caregivers Workshop
Residents offering free workshop on elder care Sept. 22

Haddonfield residents Grayson
and Lori Heberley felt something
was missing in the community.
For myself, I think the caregivers burden is growing and a
lot of information is misunderstood, which can hurt a lot of people. The caregivers suffer and
their loved one suffers, Grayson
said.
To help fill this need, Grayson
and Lori are giving a free workshop for caregivers about elder
care.
What we want is to help the

caregiver care for the people they

love. We want to make it possible.
We feel caring for the elderly and
caregiver together is a way of
keeping people together in the
lives of their choice, Lori said.
The workshop called A Caregivers Workshop: Caring for
Your Aging Parents addresses
possible elder care issues and solutions, as well as misinformation. The workshop will be held
on Tuesday, Sept. 22 from 6:30 p.m.
to 8:30 p.m. at Grace Church.
Grayson and Lori are both well
aware and versed in the difficulties elder care can present to caregivers. Grayson is a certified

elder law attorney running his

own practice in town, and Lori is
a geriatric care manager and the
owner of South Jersey Geriatric
Care, PC. From their experiences,
they can provide those who attend with well informed and, oftentimes, much-needed information.
Individuals 85 years and older
are one of the fastest growing segments of the population, according to the Family Care Alliance

to Lancaster Sept. 29
The Haddonfield 65 Club is taking another trip, this time to the
Amish Country in Lancaster, Pa.,
on Sept. 29.
The trip will include transportation, leaving from Wedgewood Swim Club at 9 a.m. heading to Rockvale Outlet Stores,
then on to the Amish Farm and
House, with a tour and lecture on
the Amish lifestyle, as well as a
tour of the home and a one-room
school house. There will be liberal time to walk around the farm

Car seat safety law is in effect

New state law is a good measure to keep our children safe

much we pay in taxes, whether we get
that promotion, whether we can take
that vacation and whether the last season of True Detective was absolutely horrible or sneakily impressive.
The new child car seat law that went
into effect last week is the perfect example of this. Among everything else
that is going on in our world and
among some pretty questionable decisions they sometimes make our
elected officials are still looking out
for our childrens safety.
Starting last Tuesday, stricter rules
went into effect for car seats, and these
rules adhere to the American Academy of Pediatrics list of recommenda-

Among the new rules:
Children under 2 who weigh less
than 30 pounds must be secured in a
rear-facing seat equipped with a fivepoint harness.
Children 2-4 who weigh up to 40
pounds can be either in a rear- or
front-facing seat.
Children 4-8 who are less than 57
inches tall must be in a forward-facing
seat or a booster seat.
Children between 8 and 17 must

wear seat belts.

Some of these changes are going to
cost parents extra money, as they will
require the purchase of new car seats,
and will require children to be in them
for longer than before.
But thats OK. There should be no
expense spared when dealing with
child safety.
The states official website says auto
crashes are the leading cause of death
for children 6 and older, and using a
car seat properly is one of the simplest and most effective methods available to protect them.
So spend whatever it takes to keep
your children safe on the road. And if
you need help installing the seats
properly, call the local police department. Safety is No. 1.

Grove Street reconstruction is a two-month project

Plans include new drainage, pedestrian improvements, concrete work and paving

Grove Street is a well-traveled road. It
carries thousands of cars a day.
Grove Street is, unfortunately, also
known for its potholes and uneven sidewalks.
About two weeks ago, Camden County
started a two-month construction project
on Grove Street to address this. Through a
$2.5 million federal highway grant, Grove
Street will be completely reconstructed, including new drainage, pedestrian improvements, concrete work and paving.
This roadway carries thousands of vehicles a day through Haddonfield and
Cherry Hill and was targeted for investment by the board, Freeholder Ian
Leonard, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Works, said in a press

release. This two-month project represents our continued commitment to address our infrastructure needs and ensure
Camden County keeps moving.
Dan Keashen, director of public affairs
for Camden County, said Grove Street is
known as a wetlands area as it transverses
over the Cooper River. Upgrades to those
areas in regard to drainage, sidewalks and
streets are needed.
As Grove Street is a well-travelled road
by motorists, as well as much used for
recreation by bicyclists and runners, the
county sought improvements.
The improvements on Grove Street have
been a year-long endeavor, as the borough
and county worked to get the reconstruction project started. Earlier in July, Grove
Street upgrades had been delayed as the
county ran into some funding and contracting issues, according to Borough Commis-

sioner John Moscatelli. However, the Grove

Street reconstruction project was finalized
when the county awarded the project to
Lexa Concrete.
The contractor began the concrete work
within the first block closest to Kings Highway. It will continue with concrete installation down one side of the street to Maple
Avenue and then switch to the other side,
moving back toward Kings Highway, according to the borough website.
Because of the area it traverses, we
want to be sure that we have a designated
area where pedestrians can walk the street
and have an insulated buffer from traffic,
Keashen said.
According to a release on Aug. 24, traffic
is being detoured south on Wood Lane to
Hawthorne Avenue. The northbound lane

$10,000 to Haddonfield Public Library
The Haddonfield Adult School
has made a $10,000 donation to
the Haddonfield Public Library to
use for the library renovation and
expansion that is currently under
way.
Funds will be placed in the
Haddonfield Public Librarys 21st
Century Campaign fund. The Library Board of Trustees has established this fund to pay for enhancements to the renovation
that will provide flexible spaces to
accommodate technology such as
laptops and mobile devices; materials in multiple formats for a diverse population of users and the
creation of a welcoming, comfortable environment for Haddonfields library users of all ages.
Plans include a multi-purpose
meeting room on the lower level
of the renovated library that will
be used for educational purposes,
such as lectures, collaborative
learning in a high technology environment, and a place for community gatherings.

but the caregiver doesnt understand the array of services available, how to access these services,
how to fund the sources or even if
the senior is capable of accepting
the services.
To address the issue, the Heberleys have developed this free community workshop with caregivers
in mind. Their goal is to help families create a compassionate and
secure plan for their loved one's
future, identify their situation's
unique needs, tap into programs
and resources to address those
needs, and learn about government benefits that can help with
the cost of professional support.
"Developing a care plan for our
elderly loved ones is often fraught
with anxiety, and sometimes even
guilt. Our goal is to clarify some
of these issues and get families
pointed in the best direction,"
Lori said.
Some examples of the things
Lori and Grayson feel are often
mistaken or some people dont
know about are government benefits for the elderly and veterans
and the capabilities of health insurance in regard to ongoing
care.
(Elder care) is not often covered by health insurance. Health
insurance is for recovery, not ongoing maintenance. Ongoing care
is most often paid for out of pocket or through government programs, not health insurance,
Lori said.
The Heberleys feel it is important for people to be informed
about elder care, as there is a lot
at stake. There are the possibilities of financial and legal burdens, improper care of the elderly
and not enough information
given to the caregiver.
You always want to make sure
you get the right care from the
right source at the right time,
Grayson said.
At the workshop, Lori and
Grayson intend to provide all the
participants with things they will
need such as folders, papers/pamphlets with information and a

pad for writing notes. Caregivers

should just show up.
They just need to attend and
be armed with questions,
Grayson said.

HMHS scored high with a 100
percent student retention rate
and a 99.5 percent graduation
rate. It also had a high percentage
of students college bound, with
97.4 percent.
This is a community that
loves their school, and people
move to this town for the school.
One of the things I notice are the
parents are successful, involved
in their childrens lives and want
them to be successful; so as far as
motivating the students to pursue
higher education, it is very easy,
as it is an expectation of the community, HMHS Principal Chuck
Klaus said.
HMHS average AP score was a
3.84 out of 5. As of now, the high
school has 20 AP courses, adding

an AP computer science course

this year. The high school tries to
provide students with AP classes
it finds students want or need to
further their education. Also, AP
courses and taking the AP test
when in the course is optional,
compared to other schools that require it. Perry and Klaus credit
the success of the AP courses to
the teachers, as they seek out the
professional development themselves and take the extra time to
better themselves and their
courses.
The teachers receive professional development, take advantage of it and put the extra time
in. They know their students and
work to their students needs,
Klaus said.
The average SAT total for
HMHS was 1768, a higher score
than the class of 2013 average
total score, which was 1497, according to College Board. The
ACT score was high as well with a
26.1 average score compared to
the national average of 21 for
2014, according to www.ACT.org.
HMHS
doesnt
integrate
SAT/ACT prep in its curriculum,
but it does offer some over the
summer. Haddonfield also received a gold star from

Newsweek, which is given to

schools where economically disadvantaged students performed
at or above the state average for
all students on standardized state
reading/language arts and mathematics assessments. This didnt
affect the rankings, but is a nod to
those who help low-income students. HMHS waives application
and SAT/ACT test fees for such
students. Also, the counseling department brings in FAFSA experts to educate parents on how
to apply for financial aid.
There are no different expectations. Our teachers maintain
high expectations for all of their
students and probably couldnt
tell you who in their classroom is
economically
disadvantaged,
Wilson said.
All of HMHS successes academically, extracurricularly, culturally and socially are because
of everyone working together,
Klaus said.
Any success we have is based
on the partnership between the
staff, parents and students,
Klaus said.
