A Lecture On Teachers' Day

A one page lecture on Teachers' Day for students. This write up was prepared when I was invited by my students to talk something on the Teacher's day. I wrote what I felt like saying.

A Lecture on Teachers day

There is Teachers day as observed by students once in a year. But to us teachers, every day is a
students day! At the core of my heart I always wish to be a student!
You ask me, why do I teach? I teach for living. A dignified way of earning in order to live a descent life!
That is what I tend to believe. On the other hand, I hardly am able to do anything else for my living. But
that proclamation of mine is something hardly anyone would care!
I loved my teachers; I tried to emulate many of them. I think, I used to hate many of them too but later I
gave some discounts and believed they were not that bad souls! May be they were only some difficult
ones or of the ones I could not be able to discover - the inner workings of their minds.

Now I think, how I may be figuring amongst the minds of my students. I will not ask. But I will
keep discovering them. I must admit, the interactions with them enrich me enormously. I like to
be questioned! I love stupid questions, the innocent questions, the nave ones, the unintended
ones, the out of the context ones, the shaky ones, the irresistible ones as those give me the
testing times, the challenge to fathom the inner workings of the minds of young people like you
all. There I am! Sometimes, I love to play the mind games, the game of weird thoughts!
But students - do you really need me? I am not convinced if at all they! They have books, they
have specially prepared digestive (and often diluted) materials for exams too. Their times are
heavily shared by the multiple coaching classes, almost compulsorily undertaken like the
vaccines against exam phobia. Then what a teacher in a classroom can assure them with? And
also mind the internet - Google, Wikipedia and freely downloadable books and course
materials. It is told that the role of a teacher in a class is being minimized rapidly.
But I still walk in a class unmoved by all those! I rehearse what I would say to them and
eventually I find myself engaged in talking with them. Some equations, some diagrams, some
stories unfold over there, on the boards, on the air! I look for examples, search the answers and
wait for their questions! The conversation goes on. Conversation is a catalyst! I discover,
teaching is not only about what is taught! Teaching is a performance that creates a platform.
The performer is on the mission of eternal search for a platform for engagement of thoughts
and sharing of love - love for the subject, love for the spirit of learning. The interaction happens
between the experienced and the uninitiated, that between the discovered and the discoverer.
In the thick of eventuality, the silent marches of some flavours crisscross the minds of the
audience the mannerism, an humble gesture, a simple and powerful word, the nuances, the
subtlety, the existence of being. There a style and a point of view are perhaps established. The
thoughts are like birds in a cage, they are set to be free! And then they fly with confidence and
dazzle us! It is all about thinking about thinking perhaps. Thats something a teacher probably
wishes to do! And you know who is the best teacher? Who else? Life!! Life teaches us the way
that no one can. The saga continues..Thank you!
