Gearing up for back to school

School officials discuss upcoming school year, new initiatives and building updates

Today, you might be seeing the
colorful new backpacks and
clothing of the children of Haddonfield as they walk through
the streets of the borough. Their
faces might show a variety of expressions if you stop to take a
look happy, scared, nervous or
annoyed. However they are feeling, though, they all make their
way to one common place back
to school.
Haddonfield Public Schools
started Sept. 2, and there are a lot
of things happening this year.
Were ready to go. Our faculty
is ready and excited, Assistant
Superintendent Mike Wilson
said.
All schools began with a halfday Sept. 2 and continue with full
days Thursday and Friday. As
Monday is Labor Day, students
will have off and return Tuesday,
Sept. 8. The schools will have off
the usual holidays, and spring
break will be March 21 through
March 25. The last day for high
school students will be June 16,
and, for students in kindergarten
through eighth grade, June 17.
For the 2015-2016 school year,

Grove Street construction underway

Freeholder Ian Leonard, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Works, wants
motorists to be aware that the
southbound lane of Grove Street
is closed between Maple Avenue
and Hawthorne Avenue in Haddonfield while crews demolish
the concrete pavement along the
shoulder of the roadway.
Grove Street will be completely
reconstructed through a $2.5 million federal highway grant and
will include new drainage, pedestrian improvements, concrete
work and paving over the next
two months.

Traffic is currently being detoured south on Wood Lane to
Hawthorne Avenue to get back to
Grove Street. The northbound
lane of Grove Street is open to
traffic. This project will be ongoing and motorists should be
aware that there will be intermittent closures and lane changes
during construction. If possible
motorists should explore new
routes for their daily commutes.
This roadway carries thousands of vehicles a day through
Haddonfield and Cherry Hill and
was targeted for investment by
the board, Leonard said. This
two-month project represents our
continued commitment to address our infrastructure needs

and ensure Camden County

keeps moving.
The exact timing of the project
is dependent upon the weather
and other factors.
The Camden County Department of Public Works is responsible for maintaining more than
1,200 lane miles of county roadway and 50 bridges. It is dedicated to making our area safer for
motorists
and
pedestrians
through county highway construction projects, snow removal
and road maintenance, including
pothole repairs, street sweeping,
grass cutting and storm drainage
upkeep. The Public Works Department is located in Lindenwold where personnel are on call
24 hours a day, 7 days a week to

Police: Armed robbery and

carjacking suspect apprehended
On Tuesday, July 28 at approximately 3:30 p.m., the
suspect of the armed
robbery and priest carjacking that occurred
on June 16 at the Haddonfield Rite Aid pharmacy was arrested.
The suspect was taken into custody in Cherry Hill.
A Haddonfield officer temporally assigned to the Detective Bureau gathered information on the
suspects whereabouts. While enroute to confirm the suspects location, the officer observed the
suspects vehicle traveling in
Cherry Hill. The officer followed
the suspect into the parking lot of

a convenience store and called for

the assistance of the Cherry Hill
Police Department.
Officers from the Haddonfield
Police Department along with officers from the Cherry
Hill Police Department affected the arrest without incident.
The suspect was
charged with robbery,
carjacking, aggravated assault and weapons offenses
and remanded to the Camden
County Jail in lieu of $315,000
cash bail.

New Jersey has a heroin problem

We need to do something to stop the growing issue

eroin is a dangerous drug. We

all know that. But for a long
time, it was a drug that remained out of the mainstream, reserved, in many peoples minds, for
the inner cities.
Somewhere, somehow, a few years
ago, though, the awful drug made its
way out of tiny inner circles and has
become an epidemic throughout our
state.
The Department of Human Services
Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services released a report in May
that found that in 2014, 28,332 people in
New Jersey were admitted into substance abuse treatment programs with
heroin or another opiate listed as the
individuals primary drug. Thats almost half of the 64,766 people who en-

tered treatment programs last year.

More terrifying is the significant increase in the number of heroin-related
deaths. In 2009, 351 heroin deaths were
reported in New Jersey, according to
the state Department of Criminal Justice. That number jumped to 449 in
2011, up to 591 in 2012, then 741 in 2013
and finally 781 last year.
The state has been trying to curb
this problem by first giving life-saving
Narcan kits to police departments
throughout New Jersey, and then ex-

panding that program to provide the

kits to anyone police or not who
completes training.
Its great that there is a tool that can
help save the life of someone who has
overdosed on heroin. But saving the
life in that instance does not stop that
person from taking the drug.
The next step in our states fight
against heroin must be more educational and treatment programs, readily available to kids at a young age. Can
we build more facilities and expand
drug prevention education?
The way to stop heroin-related
deaths is to prevent people from using
the drug in the first place. Because,
once they use the drug, its an uphill
battle fighting its highly-addictive nature.

Performing arts center announces concert schedule

The Haddonfield Center and School for
the Performing Arts and artistic director
Maximillian Esmus have announced the
2015-2016 concert series at Grace Church in
Haddonfield. This year, we feature Wanamaker organist Peter Richard Conte,
choral music from some of the area's best
singers and the delightful sounds of
strings and harp.

Operation Backpack a success

Kiwanis and Aktion clubs team up for annual school supplies fundraiser
Eager hands of Kiwanis Club
and Aktion Club members made

Center for Family Services' Operation Backpack.
Adjourning their Aug. 14 club
meeting early, the Kiwanis Club
of the Haddons along with the
Bancroft Aktion Club stuffed
backpacks with crayons, pencils,
pens, highlighters, rulers, glue,
composition books, notebooks,
binders, folders, pencil boxes and
more. This is the 10th year the Kiwanis Club has provided backpacks to the Center for Family
Services in Camden.
Jason Bintliff, advisor for the
Aktion Club, said the five club
members came today ready to
work. Aktion Club is a service
club for adults with disabilities.
Club members have been
shopping the sales for the past
month. Some even started backpack shopping last September,
said club secretary Milton Smith
of Burlington City, an architect
with Kitchen & Associates Architectural
Services
in
Collingswood.
The need this year is so great.

We trust the Center for Family

Services to find the local children
who are in need of this school
year boost, said club treasurer
Margaret Henry-Parker, an executive with Camden County Office
On Economic Opportunity.
Kiwanis Club president John

along his granddaughter to help
stuff the backpacks.
She always looks forward to
this project, showing how we can
help others in our community,
he said.

Roadway improvement
projects for the fall

County Freeholder
Boards Department
of Public Works
(CCDPW) has scheduled roadway improvement projects
benefitting motorists
in several Camden
County communities
throughout the fall.
Improving our roadway infrastructure while increasing highway safety
is one of the best investments we can
make in our county. Each year the
Freeholder Board identifies roadways and bridges that are in need of
improvement across our County.
About $400,000 in enhancements
are taking place at the intersection of
Factory and Tansboro Roads in
Winslow Township that will bring a
new traffic light to this well-traveled
juncture. Over the years as more residents have moved into the southern
portion of the county, vehicle volume
has grown creating the need for a signalized intersection.
Southern Camden County has experienced a growth of businesses and
homes that have brought with it increased traffic. We are continually
improving our roadway infrastructure to keep up with that growth and
anticipate future demand. In addition, having a controlled intersection
will make it safer for both pedestrian,
bike and motor vehicle traffic in the
area.
Also this fall, a $1 million project
for the reconstruction of Stone Road
between the White Horse Pike and
East Atlantic Avenue will result in a
newly paved roadway surface, new
drainage infrastructure and additional concrete work through the boroughs of Laurel Springs and
Lindenwold.
Stone Road has is a major artery
through Laurel Springs and Lindenwold so Im happy to see this project
underway. Besides repaving the

drainage work on this

project will benefit
the quality of life for
residents and businesses in the area.
We appreciate the
patience and understanding of motorists
for any inconvenience
they may experience
due to traffic delays or
detours which will be posted if necessary during these improvement projects. The exact timing of all of these
projects will be determined by the
weather and other factors.

His latest was at the USA Masters Track & Field Competition in
Jacksonville, Fla., at the end of
July. Goldy walked away with
first-place medals from the 100meter dash, shot put, discus,
javelin and weight throw for the
95- to 99-year-old male category.
It is fun to me. I enjoy it very
much and naturally it is a good
thing to keep yourself healthy as
much as possible, Goldy said.
Since he was young, Goldy always loved running. He had very
impressive times when he was
growing up, running the 100meter dash in 10.62 seconds at the
age of 14, but never had a coach to
nurture his abilities.
Instead, he pursued a life in the
ministry. He went to Dickinson
College where he got his degree
and then he was all over New Jersey serving in many churches before retiring at the age of 70.
His love for running was renewed after that. Goldys interest
was piqued when he received a
brochure in the mail about the
Senior Olympics in New Jersey.
He looked at the brochure and
said to himself, I can do that
and sent in his application. Goldy
started running around the block
for practice, and by the time the
Olympics came up, he was ready
and won medals in the 100-meter
and 200-meter events.
A few years later, Goldy got
into the shot put, discus, javelin
and weight throw.
Goldy has done very well for
himself, winning many medals
over the years.
It doesnt matter if you win. It
is the fact that you can run that
counts, Goldy said.
In July 2014, he made national
headlines when he competed in
the USA Track and Field Masters
Outdoor Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C. He and four
other men from across the U.S.
all older than 90 set world
records in the 4x100-meter
(2:22.37), the 4x400 (12:41.69) and
the 4x800 (28:17.10) that day. Goldy,
the oldest in the group, brought

At the Penn Relays this year,
Goldy did the 100-meter dash in
33.9, which he thought was quite
slow. So he worked hard and at
the USA Masters Track & Field
Competition in Jacksonville, improved his time to 31.8. He would
like to lower it further to less than
30 seconds if he could.
This year, Goldy stopped running the 200-meter relay due to it
becoming a little too rough. However, he continues to do the 100meter dash, shot put, discus,
javelin and weight throw.
At 98, you could die any
minute. So I thank the good Lord
for every minute I have a chance,
that I am alive and that I can do it.
And if I am setting a record, I
dont plan for it, it is just there. I
enjoy doing it. I have fun; it is
healthy, Goldy said.
Today, Goldy can be seen training and practicing for the senior
Olympics and other competitions.
His ultimate goal, which he has
had for the past 10 years, is to run
the 100-meter when he is 100
years old at the Penn Relays.
So many people come up to
me, saying I hope I live as long as
you do and be able to do what you
do well, or boy, if I could keep
myself healthy and do what you
do, I can reach the same age as
you.
And it is nice to set that example. [But] I dont have any feeling
that I am 98, doesnt make any

sense to me. It is just everyday

stuff that I am doing, having fun
and going with it from there. But
then the records say Im 98, he
said with a laugh.
Despite all of Goldys accomplishments, that isnt what he is
most proud of. His favorite accomplishment has been working in
churches and building them to be
better.
They were better when I left.
There were more people attending and people making decisions
to learn more about the Lord,
Goldy said.
Goldys next competition is
coming up soon at the New Jersey
Olympics on Sept. 11, 12 and 13 in
Woodbridge.

Developmental Designs for the
Middle School is an extension of
programs already implemented
at the elementary schools. It is a
responsive classroom program
designed to enrich the culture
within the middle school among
students and teachers.
It will create a positive environment in school where students are valued and feel as
though they are welcomed, Wilson said.
Some big changes at HMHS include an open campus for upperclassmen and international student visitors. A pilot of the open
campus was started last spring to
see how students would take to it.
It was very well received, so the
open campus was integrated into
HMHS officially for this year.
The international exchange
program brings in students from
other countries who wish to
study in American schools. Paying between $25,000 to $30,000, depending on length of time, students from China can come into
the schools and experience American culture and learning. Right
now, there are five Chinese stu-

For PARCC this year, the testing has changed to one testing
window, rather than two. Because
there is no longer a second sitting, the one testing window is
longer to compensate for the second sitting. The procedures, however, will be the same. More information and dates for schools can

We coordinate with the testing schedule, tech department
and maintenance guys to load up
several laptop computers and
move them around to the schools
so we can get done efficiently,
Wilson said.
New laptops and five laptop
carts were added for further use
in the classrooms and a secondary use for PARCC. The school
district was also able to get funds
to provide one 3D printer in each
school.
The middle school, already
having one, has used it for classes
and showed that the 3D printers
would be useful to have in all of
the schools.
While all administrators are
the same as last year, 26 new
teachers were added to the faculty.
With the district receiving
Title 1 money this year, not having qualified for it before, the
schools have added learning support teachers, who work with students in grades one and two identified as at risk. Title 1 is used
for targeted assistance, meaning
identifying those who need extra
support and providing it for
them.
The school received $156,000 of
Title 1 money.
Over the summer, the school
district completed a comprehensive analysis of its building envelopes, which includes exterior
walls, doors, roofs and windows.
During the investigations by the
districts architect and engineers,

it was discovered there were
emergency structural concerns at
Tatem Elementary School and
HMHS.
At Tatem, the 1990 entranceway, the 1923 entranceway and
the 1954 section at the back wall of
the building showed concerns,
mostly entryway and exterior
wall faade issues.
The 1990 entranceway has a
temporary fix that makes it usable and safe. The 1923 entrance
and stairwell are blocked off as
well as the two classrooms affected by the 1954 section. The two
classrooms affected have been relocated to other classrooms within the building. Emergency repairs at Tatem are occurring now
and will continue through October.
Architects and engineers also
saw the B Gym at HMHS had
structural issues in addition to
the dance studio and early childhood offices. The exterior faade
there shows signs of possible failure.
Because of this, the dance studio, early childhood offices and
cafeteria kitchen area will be
closed as a temporary solution is
put up by the second or third
week of school. Food will be prepared at the middle school and
provided to the high school during that time. For the B Gym, remediation and investigations are
continuing. It is anticipated the
gym will be ready by the winter
athletic season, or possibly before.
These projects were done
under Emergency Provisions title
18A:18A-7, which gives the school
district the ability to award emergency contracts for health and
safety issues without going out to
bid. The county as well as fire
marshals approved the emergency egress plans that were put
in place.
