That will help me to understand how much I should assume that you already know.
step 1 is you write the problem down in the standard form of division.
1800 is the dividend (the number that is being divided into).
9000 is the divisor (the number that is dividing into the dividend)
the area on top of the line is the area where you will place the result of the division.
that is called the quotient.
step 2 is where you add some zeroes to the dividend to make it larger than the divisor.
i added 3 zeroes.
I could only have added 1 and it would have been ok to start.
the original number is 1800 which is less than 9000.

if I add 1 zero to the right of 1800, it becomes 18000 which is larger than the 9000 so I can divide
into it.
you also need to place the decimal point in the quotient area right after the last digit of the original
dividend and right before the additional zeroes that you added.
you can see that in step 2, the decimal point is between the original dividend of 1800 and the first 0
that i added.
that's a place holder and it's very important to making sure the answer is correct.
in step 3, you take as much of the dividend that makes it larger than the divisor.
i took the first 5 digits of the dividend because that made 18000 which is larger than 9000.
now you divide 9000 into 18000.
it goes in exactly 2 times.
you place a 2 right above the last digit of the part of the dividend that you are dividing into.
that would be right above the last 0 of the number 18000.
that is shown in step 3.
the 2 is placed right above the third 0 in the dividend.
now you take that number 2 and you multiply the 9000 times it.
the result is 18000 which you subtract from the 18000.
the result of that is 0.
since the remaining numbers in the dividend are also 0, you can stop there.
your answer is .2 with no remainder.
the placement of the decimal point in the quotient area was necessary.
you can check you answer by multiplying the divisor by the quotient.
.2 * 9000 equals 1800
the result is the same as the original dividend so the division is good.
The trick is to make the dividend larger than the divisor.
You do that by adding 0's to the right of the dividend.
You have to keep track of where the decimal point is located based on the original dividend as I had
indicated earlier and as shown in the picture.
