Smith Library: Formatting Page Numbers Using Microsoft Word 2010 & 2013

This document provides instructions for properly paginating a paper according to Turabian 8th Edition style requirements using Microsoft Word 2010 & 2013. It outlines that page numbers must be placed at the bottom center of each page without intruding into the 1 inch margin. Front matter such as the title page and table of contents should be numbered separately in lowercase Roman numerals, while the main body of the paper uses standard Arabic numerals starting with "1". The instructions describe how to insert section breaks between the front matter and main body, and how to format the page numbers for each section using different numbering schemes.

Formatting Page Numbers Using Microsoft Word 2010 & 2013

Turabian 8th Edition Requirements:

Page number must be listed at the bottom center of each page;

Page number must not be within the 1 inch required margin at the bottom of each
page;
Front end material (title page, table of contents, etc.) must be numbered separately from
the rest of the paper. Front end material is numbered with lowercase Roman numerals.
The body of the paper is numbered using standard numeration;
No number is to be listed on the title page, but is still to be counted when paginating
front end material. Therefore, for a paper with a title page, epigraph, and table of
contents, the title page would have no number; the epigraph would be numbered as
ii, and the table of contents with iii. The main body (typically beginning with a
section labeled Introduction) would begin with 1.

NOTE: MARGINS MUST BE PROPERLY SET BEFORE PAGINATION CAN BE

PROPERLY SET!!!
Properly Paginating a Paper Using MS Word
Once the margins and footers are set properly, you can paginate your paper. You may type the
entire paper and then paginate it, or you may paginate it as you go. You cannot, however, set
the pagination from the beginning as you can the margins.

1. To properly paginate your paper,

you must place a
Section break between
the front-end material (title page
through Table of Contents) and
the main body of the paper,
which begins at the introduction.
To do this, simply go to the end
of page that immediately
precedes the Introduction.
Usually, this will mean placing
the cursor at the end of the
Table of Contents. Be sure your cursor is on a new line (press enter once or twice, if
necessary), and under the Page Layout tab, click Breaks and then Next Page under
the Section Breaks menu.

(Note: if you have already typed the paper and have the Table of Contents separated from the Introduction by a page
break or by a series of carriage returns [that is, if you pressed the enter key repeatedly until you reached a new
page], your section break may result in the creation of a new, blank page. If this occurs, simply place the cursor at the
beginning of the Introduction section and hit the backspace key until you are properly formatted. This will
probably cause your INTRODUCTION header to de-center. Dont panic. Just put it on the right page, and re-center
it. A second option to delete the blank page is to place the cursor on the blank page and hit delete.)

2. Next, you will have to format the page numbers. Put the cursor on the Title page, and
under the Insert tab, in the Header & Footer group, click Page Number and then
Format Page Numbers from the drop- down menu.

Change Number Format to i, ii, iii, ... and set Start at: in the Page numbering
section to i. Click OK.

1. Now select the Insert tab and then Page Numbers. Highlight the Bottom of
Page option, and select the Plain Number 2.

This will add page numbers to the entire document using small roman numerals.
2. You will now see a Headers and Footers toolbox open
up in the ribbon. Select the Different on First Page
tab to remove the small numeral i from the title
page.

3. Finally, to add standard numbers

(beginning with 1 to the main
body of the paper), click anywhere in the
Introduction page. Again, from the Insert
Tab under the Page Numbers grouping, click
Format Page Numbers. Reset the Number
format to standard numeration,
and set the Start at field to the 1.
If done correctly, the document should be repaginated using standard numbers beginning
with the introduction, all while leaving the lowercase Roman numerals to mark the page
numbers for front-end material.
