This is NYC
Dear Friends:
As the more than 56 million people who visited our city in
2014 know, no other place in the world is more dynamic or
more exciting for tourists to enjoy. From the North Bronx
to Staten Islands South Shore, New York City is home to
thousands of diverse neighborhoods and communities
and were proud to welcome visitors from across the globe
to our vibrant and ever-growing city.
The longer, warmer days of summer are some of the most
enjoyable in New York, and the City is in full swing with
events that will make the season unforgettable. Across the
five boroughs, musicians of every genre jam outdoors all
summer long, be it in Queens at MoMA PS1s Warm Up
experimental music series or in parks around the City for
performances by the New York Philharmonic. Thespians
take center stage at the open-air Delacorte Theater in Central
Park for Shakespeares The Tempest and Cymbeline, and
costumed characters fill the boardwalk at Coney Island for
the annual Mermaid Parade. Big-city excitement mixes with
small-town charm at the Richmond County Fair in Staten
Island, and if you find yourself wanting some peace and
quiet, Pelham Bay Park and City Island in the Bronx are
distinct urban oases with plenty of opportunities for outdoor
adventures and relaxation.
Theres never been a better time than this summer to
experience our cultural institutions, recreational venues
and unlimited programming. I hope you enjoy your visit
to New York City and come back soon to take in even
more of the five boroughs.
Sincerely,
Bill de Blasio
Mayor

The Bronx
The Bronx has made immense contributions to global culture,
sports and entertainment. It has hip-hop history, great Italian food,
performing arts and, thanks to the Yankees, championship baseball.
Its been home to personalities as varied as Jennifer Lopez and
Edgar Allan Poewhose cottage is still a major draw. In summer,
dont miss free weekly flicks on the roof of the Bronx Terminal
Market, Wave Hills charming gardens near the Hudson River,
animals of all kinds at the Bronx Zoo and vibrant floral exhibitions
including one revolving around Frida Kahloat The New York
Botanical Garden.

Brooklyn
Summer in Brooklyn means vintage finds at the Brooklyn Flea in
Fort Greene and artisanal eats at Smorgasburg in Williamsburg
and DUMBO. Its a chance to hear free concerts by major artists
in Prospect Park. Theres festive fun at Coney Island with Cyclones
minor league baseball and the Cyclone roller coaster, plus the
smell of salt air and funnel cake. The seasons warm weather
makes it a good time to slather on the sunscreen and take in
harbor views on a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, and to shop
for Russian delicacies (and maybe take a dip in the ocean) at
Brighton Beach. Of course, these are just a few of the reasons
to visit Brooklyn this season.

Manhattan
Manhattan may be New York Citys smallest borough by land area,
but the fast-paced island is packed with bright lights, Broadway
theater, fine dining, museums, nightlife and green spaces like
Central Park and the High Line. Summer represents a chance to
get out and kayak, take a river cruise, picnic on a pier at sunset
or take a tour. There are also tons of free events including concerts
in the parks, festivals and parades. Summer highlights include
the Macys Fourth of July Fireworks, Shakespeare in the Park and
the Museum Mile festival.

Queens
As New York Citys most international borough and home to people
from all over the world, Queens has virtually every type of cuisine
imaginable. Take a walking (and tasting) tour of Astorias Italian,
Brazilian, Middle Eastern and Greek restaurants for just a sampling.
A visit to the Museum of the Moving Image is a must, too; its the
only institution in the US dedicated to the art, technology and social
impact of film, television and digital media. In neighboring Long
Island City, art buffs celebrate the life and work of sculptor Isamu
Noguchi at the Noguchi Museum and stroll through nearby Socrates
Sculpture Park. Summer is also an ideal time to see the boroughs
lush side. Start at its largest park, Flushing Meadows Corona Park,
which is home to recreational spaces like the Billie Jean King
National Tennis Center, plus theater, gardens and museums.

Staten Island
Any summer visit to Staten Island should include a stop at the
Greenbelt, a network of lush parks, wetlands, open meadows
and hiking trails that includes NYCs largest forest preserve.
To get to the Citys greenest borough, board the free Staten
Island Ferry at Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan. The 25minute boat ride offers fantastic views of the Statue of Liberty
and the Lower Manhattan skyline. After you dock in St. George,
take some snapshots in the picturesque enclave of roughly 80

Airports
There are seven airports within
30 to 90 minutes of Midtown
Manhattan. Three closest to the
City are JFK, LaGuardia and

which provide quick service to
airport parking, car rental
companies and mass transit
stations connecting to the Citys
five boroughs.
Getting Around

Many people in service industries
(hotels, restaurants and transportation) have tips factored into
their wages. Heres a guide:
Hotel doorman: $3 for hailing
a taxicab.
Porter/bellhop: $1$2 per bag.
Housekeepers: $1$5 per day,
per person.
Waitstaff and bartenders:

NYCs Mass Transit
System
The best way to get around NYC
is through a combination of walking and mass transit. NYCs subways and buses are inexpensive,
operate 24/7, provide a fun way
to extend sightseeing and get you
where you need to go, fast. Other
ways to get around include ferries

Transportation
One of NYCs greatest attributes is
its accessibility: at any time of day,
modes of travel are plentiful. And
during summer, options expand
further when you can explore by
foot or bicycle. If you plan on the
latter, there are over 800 miles of
bike paths and lanes to coast
along. For a quick and affordable
choice, try the subway, which
operates 24/7, or a taxicab. Buses,
ferries and even a tram make for
a scenic, quick and convenient trip.
