The Bet

The banker and lawyer make a bet where the lawyer will spend 15 years in solitary confinement for a large sum of money. Over the 15 years, the banker's wealth dissipates as he spends lavishly, while the lawyer's views change as he passes time with only his thoughts and books. When the 15 years are over, the banker finds that the lawyer has remained resolute in his beliefs, forcing the banker to concede that life imprisonment is worse than death.
