word of thanks to all who have helped and the success of our course work.
When undertaking this course we managed to identify all the objectives that we want.
In this project, our group also learn more about the social media and its positive impacts and
so its negative effects both on students. It is expected that this project will help Malaysians,
especially teenagers and students to understand more about social media and how to use them
in better ways.
SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION
Social Media also called social instrument of communication people interact freely
share and discuss about their lives using pictures, video, and audio. These have become
helpful in the lives of million people especially to students. It helps them in the way of
communication and as the source of information for the students. Although it helps them a lot
as their learning tool, there are still disadvantages that may affect their studies and it may
cause harm to them. The purpose of this research is to help the students be aware of the world
they are living and to let them know the effects of Social Media on their different phases of
life as a students.
Social media has exploded as a category of online discourse where people create the
content, share it, bookmark it and network at a prodigious rate. Examples include Facebook,
MySpace, Tumblr, and Twitter. Because of its ease of use, speed and reach, social media is
fast changing the public discourse in society and setting trends and agendas in topics that
range from the environment and politics to technology and the entertainment industry.
Research Problem
The most abundant users of Social Media are teens and most of them are students. Teenagers
years are also called the Rebellion Years. Since most of them are probably still learning
several media sites have many affects into their lives that they might not control.
Social media has played a big role on teens these days, but it is a good or bad thing.
The high usage of Social Media among teens has been caused by easy access to the internet,
the day and age we live in, and no parental guidance. The effects on these teens have resulted
in bullying, low self-esteem and less face to face interaction. Talking to teens about proper
using of internet and limiting household computer time are a few solutions that could be used
to help the problem.
Research Purpose:
This study aims to find out the Effects of Social Media on Students of UNITENS Sultan Haji
Ahmad Shah College (KSHAS).
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
Research Questions:
3. What are the reasons that influence students addiction to Social Media?
1.1.1
RESEARCH QUESTION
4
There are clearly positive and negative effects of social media in students life. Whether it is
good or not, the use of social media has become an interest, especially teenagers and students
using technology, including social networking sites on a regular basis tend to have more
stomach pain, other sleep disorders, and anxiety and depression. These students also display
more than narcissistic tendency than many other psychological disorders, including various
anti-social behaviour and aggressive tendencies.
Excessive daily usage of social networking sites tend to have a negative impact on the
health of all students because it makes them more vulnerable to various health problems in
the future. This is where people including friends, teachers and parents play a major role in
making students aware of what they missed while spending too much time on social media
and networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr.
Social media sites have become very popular in a short period of time as the information
gets published in a fast way. This has created a lax attitude to use the spelling and grammar in
communications. In fact, students cannot write effectively without the help of computer spell
check feature.
A kind of anonymity that can be found on the Internet has made many students forget that
they have to censor any information they post. This is because many colleges and potential
employers tend to investigate applicant's social network profile before they give any receipt
or interviews. And there are many students who do not always assess the content they publish
online. All this can lead to negative consequences even later on in their life.
RQ2: What are the advantages and disadvantages of Social Media to Students?
a) Advantages
In Communication
People usually use these sites to communicate faster and easier to the people far from them.
Chat rooms are also useful for sending each other personal messages when they are not able
to communicate to their friends and acquaintances using mobile phones. They can attach and
share files with their classmates through social media sites.
Communication have made easier by using social media sites than the tradition before.
One of the most fascinating uses of the new form of communication is that you can
corresponding to many people by means of social media instead of meeting each other in
person. You can save time, money and energy by the use of Internet and those social media
sites.
In Education
Nowadays, students are too much curious about the world they are living. But because of
Social Media we became updated about the latest happenings in our world. Social Media as a
source of information help the students about their assignment and projects to make it easier.
Through Social Media they learn to adapt to the world using a relatively new form of
education. Social Networking sites have created a new social dimension where individuals
can develop increased level of awareness. Interacting with these sites, students can become
more globally knowledge and even more self-aware.
b) Disadvantages
Academic Performance
Social media has big factors that affect peoples lives. And based on the studies today,
students in this generation are exposed to the environment where technology is highly
innovated. Social networking sites have become extremely popular today especially to
students that usually are teens.
One of the negative effects of social media in students learning is when they cannot focus
enough to their studies. The students are reduced on focusing in their learning as well as on
retaining the information. In addition, students are attempting to multi-task. They are trying
to check various social media sites while studying. While searching and studying online, they
get attracted to using social media sites and sometimes they forget why they are using
internet. This reduces their learning and research capabilities.
As an Entertainment
The use of social network sites has increased exponentially and is a global phenomenon.
Online social network sites provide several benefits. Social networks also have serious
disadvantages, such as violation of confidentiality and privacy, unforeseen consequences, and
potential threat to personal safety.
One of the major disadvantages of using social networking websites are the students
get addicted to it. They used to spend hours in those social networking sites which
can obviously degrade the students academic performance.
Some students may tend to use to these social networking sites till mid night or even
more which can obviously lead to health related problems.
Some students may spend time in Facebook through which they lack to spend time
with their family members. This can also be a disadvantage also.
Some students may provide detailed information like phone numbers, address which
is very dangerous because they can easily tracked down by strangers.
In Family
7
As students become busier on browsing those sites, they dont have much time left to
spend with their families. They become more focused to those that might cause them to forget
the obligations and responsibilities they need to do. There is also a possibility that the parents
might not feed their child with their advice because they dont have his/her full attention.
Students that are more focused to the world of social media will lead to the lack of parental
supervision.
RQ3: What are the reasons that influence students addiction to Social Media?
Many teens usually spend sleepless nights on social media without the knowledge of their
parents. The disruption of sleep has adverse effects on the teens. It has led to cases of
insomnia, mood swings, attention deficits at school and increased obesity just to mention a
few. These are some of the serious negative effects of social media on teenagers and issues
that are arising with kids often addicted to Facebook. With such overwhelming evidence of
the negative effects of social media on our children, why then, are many parents not taking
more action to protect their children?
There perhaps are three major reasons:
Parents are unaware of the issues involved in the online connections. While kids are
plugged in to social media, only about 40% of parents are involved themselves. Parents may
not be aware of their childrens pages and dont fully understand privacy policies and they
dont realize what kinds of public postings are taking place, involving their children.
Parents dont want to interfere in their childrens social lives. Most parents want their
children to be popular, accepted and enjoy a happy social life. Parents sometimes concern
themselves with childrens rights their right to privacy and their right to interact in
todays popular forums. Parents want to allow their children to be as connected as the other
kids they associate with, and so they tell themselves that everything is ok.
Parents are afraid to take a stand. Many of modern parents are becoming apathetic
to the real dangers that too much social media can present to their children. They dont want
8
to push their teens away and so they allow their participation in social media to go unchecked
rather than make a big deal out of it.
The problems this new online society creates are not going away and will continue to
grow. Parents must get off the side lines and get involved! Parents have the responsibility to
protect their children and be aware of what is going in the online world. Investigate and help
your child adjust privacy settings. Be aware of who can see what they post, and what is being
posted about them. Take with them about online safety.
Students today have begun to rely on the accessibility of information that is available on the
social media platforms specifically as well as the web in general in order to get answers. This
means that there is a reduced focus on learning as well as on retaining information.
In addition, students are more likely attempting to multi-task. This can be seen when
they are trying to check various social media sites while they study. This of course will leads
to reduced academic performance. Besides that, their ability to concentrate on their task at
hand gets significantly reduced due to the distraction that is brought by all these social media
sites.
Apart from that, the other negative effect on students is that they are spending too
much time on social sites, and much lesser time on socializing in person. In fact, there is a
lack of body signals besides other nonverbal cues, including tone and inflection in case of
social networking sites. Thus, they cannot be considered as an adequate replacement for any
face-to-face communication. Not only this, students who are spending a great deal of time on
these social networking sites are not able to communicate in person in an effective manner.
9
These social media sites have become so popular in such a short time because the
information gets published in a fast way. This has actually created a lax attitude for using
proper spelling as well as grammar. In fact, the students are unable to write effectively
without the aid of the spell check feature of a computer.
The kind of anonymity that is available on the Internet has made many students forget
that they need to filter any information that they post. In fact, many colleges as well as
potential employers tend to investigate the social networking profiles of an applicant before
they grant any acceptance or an interview. And there are many students who are not
constantly evaluating the content which they are publishing online. All this can lead to
negative consequences even later on in their life.
2.1 - The last century was the golden age for media development. New technologies such as
the telephone, radio, and television have changed people's life forever. New ways of
communication have been successfully adopted and put in practice. The last decade of the
century brought new innovative technology - Internet. As predicted by Newman (1991),
Internet:
Changed sense of geographical distance.
Allowed a substantial increase in the number of communications.
Provided the possibility of increasing the speed of communication.
The opportunity for interactive communication requirements.
Authorized form of communication that were previously separate overlap and interconnect.

This chapter will outline the research methodology, applied techniques, and
procedures undertaken. It will also explain how the research was planned and implemented.
The thorough description of research design will also be presented in this study.
By conducted a good research design, the effectiveness and efficiency of the research
project can be achieved. A deep understanding of the following component of research design
is required:
i.
ii.
iii.
iv.
Data type:
Data type is different types of data that will include a range of value or a specific type of data
in a storage formant. A variable that is stored as data in a computer program has to be a
specific data type. There are many different types of data that includes dates, values,
numbers, and characters to name a few.
11
First of all, to discuss the reasoning behind the hypothesis, literature review was
performed which analyzed secondary data. The secondary data was collected from various
academics and practitioners sources. Because of the scarcity of data in the academic
literature, some of the most valuable information and research reports was gained through the
students. The academic articles and research papers, books, published case studies, academic
and industrial magazines or solitary articles where used to generate a broader view on the
subject.
In order to answer the main research question and to test the hypothesis proposed in
the introduction, the primary data was collected through the web survey (self-administrated
questionnaire were used). It enabled researchers to apply statistical analysis methods for the
study.
12
The survey was conducted by the researchers to gather the opinion of the respondents
to the effects of Social Media into their learnings. The type of question asked to the
respondents are relevant enough to know the effects of Social Media to them weather its an
advantage or not. The questions asked to 50 respondents of UNITENS students.
According to the survey, sixty percent (60%) of our respondents are female while the
rest, forty percent (40%) are male. About sixty percent (60%) of the students are in favour of
Facebook, twenty-five (25%) percent in Google and fifteen percent (15%) in Online Games.
Eighty percent (80%) of students admitted that they spent one to two hours and twenty
percent (20%) of students admitted that they spent three to five hours per day. In terms of
benefit of Social Media, twenty percent (20%) agreed that Social Media helps with
assignments while another fifty-five percent (80%) just use Social Media for fun. Meanwhile,
around fifty five percent (55%) of the user of social media are among 18-21 years old
students and around forty five percent (45%) are among 22-25 years old students.
According to the data we collected from the anonymous questionnaire, most high
school students would prefer to use social media and therefore spent vast hours checking
Social Media Sites. Facebook is very popular among UNITENs students even though
students would use it when they had classes. Ninety-Nine percent (99%) of student spent
their time on entertainment; there were not too many UNITENs students who preferred using
Social Media to deal with their homework.
