3 Units (2 Units Lecture, equivalent to 2 hours; 1 Unit Laboratory equivalent to 3 hours)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course is designed to help students understand how a computer works, its capabilities, limitations and applications. It covers the history and development of computer, system components, number systems, and internet technology. This course also teaches skills in using computer software with topics on basic file management and the use of major software applications employed in office environments.
PRE-REQUISITE
None
COURSE OBJECTIVES
To be able to understand and use common computer applications.
To introduce the components of computer systems and their functions. To understand the contributions of several pioneers in the computing field. To understand the difference in daily life before and after the advent of personal computers and the Internet. To be able to describe the different components of a computer including data representation, microprocessors, memory, storage devices, input and output devices. To be able to understand the fundamentals of Internet technology and networks. To be able to understand how programs are created and how the computer industry operates.

Hands-on laboratory exercises, recitation, quizzes, exams and IT case study.
