Safety Instructions
Safety Instructions
Before setting CMB IO-7 into operation, please read the following safety
instructions carefully.
Without in-depth understanding of this information, it is not advisable to
set CMB IO-7 into operation!
CMB IO-7 should be operated by trained personnel only.
CMB IO-7 should only be used in a safe manner. Be mindful of the dangers
of operating the CMB IO-7, pay attention to this reference manual, keep the
CMB IO-7 in a technically sound condition and use it in accordance with the
regulations. In particular, avoid any disruptions that could in turn affect user
safety.
CMB IO-7 is exclusively intended for the application areas described in more
detail in section 1 Designated Use on page 13. Any other use is deemed as
not being in accordance with the regulations. The manufacturer/distributor is
not liable for damage resulting from unintended usage. The user alone
assumes all responsibility and risk.
CMB IO-7s housing should not be opened for reason as there are no user
maintainable components inside.
Recomended Procedures
Personnel assigned to use CMB IO-7 should read and understand the
reference manual before beginning work - in particular the section on
recommended safety instructions. This also applies even to personnel who
only work occasionally with CMB IO-7.
Testing with CMB IO-7 should only be carried out by authorized and qualified
personnel. The user is responsible for the safe operation of the CMB IO-7.
Contact an OMICRON service center if training is desired.
Safety Operation
10
Bring CMB IO-7 into operation following the instructions in Section 2 Setting
into Operation on page 15.
CMB IO-7 must only be used with an outlet that has a solid, protective
ground.
Before connecting and disconnecting test objects, verify that all outputs have
been turned off and are in de-energized state. Never connect or disconnect
a test object while the outputs are voltage- or current-carrying ("ON").
When disconnecting cables, always start on the side feeding the power.
All sockets of the IO modules on the rear of the unit are to be considered
dangerous. Hazardous voltages up to 300Vrms are present. Hence, only use
cables rated to the respective working voltage requirements.
Do not insert objects (e.g. screwdrivers, etc.) into the sockets or into the
ventilation slots of the enclosure.
Do not operate CMB IO-7 when explosive gas or vapors are present.
The SELV interface (Safety Extra Low Voltage) of CMB IO-7 (Host Interf.,
Sync and ext. Interf.) should only have external devices connected that
meet the requirements for SELV based on EN 60950 or IEC 60950.
When setting up CMB IO-7, make sure that the enclosure ventilation slots on
the back, top, and bottom of the test unit remain unobstructed.
Voltages up to 1kV can be present inside of CMB IO-7. Therefore, CMB IO-7
may only be opened by the manufacturer.
Safety Instructions
First, unplug the power cord to the test unit from the power source!
The power fuse is situated on the rear side of the test unit.
Only use the specified fuse type. Otherwise damage of the test unit and
therefore possible danger to the operator is possible.

Designated Use
1 Designated Use
CMB IO-7 is a PC-controlled test unit principally consisting of binary inputs and
outputs. For that purpose CMB IO-7 provides 7 module plug-in slots which can
be equipped with different IO1 modules. As a result CMB IO-7 is flexible and is
able to efficiently support a wide range of protection applications.
The signals applied to the inputs of CMB IO-7 are precisely time tagged. The
desired timing characteristic of the corresponding output reactions can be
specified in the controlling test software of the OMICRON Test Universe by
using freely programmable sequences.
If CMB IO-7 is used together with a CMC test set, CMB IO-7 appears to be a fully
integrated extension of the binary inputs and outputs available.
CMB IO-7 is a part of the OMICRON Test Universe test system which, in
addition to the CMB IO-7 test unit, consists of a personal computer, the test
software and typically a CMC test set.
Time-synchronization with the CMC test set (CMC 156 or CMC 256)
Any other use of CMB IO-7 is deemed as not being in accordance with this
manual.
1. IO = Input/Output

When setting up the test system, it is most important to make sure that
the ventilation slots remain unobstructed.

Every gray area represents a galvanic group that is isolated from all other
galvanic groups.
All connections are located on the rear side of the test unit. These include:
the SELV interfaces "SELV group" (SELV = Safety Extra Low Voltage)
The safety relevant isolated circuits (power SELV, power IO modules and
IO modules SELV) are marked as "reinforced insulation" in the block diagram.

IO Modules
The CMB IO-7 test unit has 7 plug-in slots for IO modules. Depending on the
module types (input or output modules) the plug-in slots are equipped from left
to right or from right to left. Refer to Figure 3-2.

Input modules
The inputs are read at a time resolution of 100s. Depending on the
configuration made with the OMICRON Test Universe software, the input
signals are then debounced or degliched.
The software allows the definition if potential-carrying (wet) or potential-free
(dry) contacts. For potential-carrying contacts it is also possible to adjust the
expected nominal voltage as well as the threshold voltage for the binary inputs.
For detailed technical information about input modules please refer to
section 6 Technical Data and Descriptions of IO Modules on page 45.
For detailed information about configuring the binary inputs please refer to the
online help system for the test software of the OMICRON Test Universe.
24
Output modules
Depending on the type of output module the outputs are implemented either as
relay outputs or as electronic outputs. The most important characteristics are
compared in the following table.

General Information
For an overview of available IO modules and detailed information please refer
to section 6 Technical Data and Descriptions of IO Modules on page 45.
The CMB IO-7 test unit provides a total of 7 plug-in slots which can be equipped
with different IO modules. The IO modules have 40-pole module connectors
used as CMB IO-7 interfaces for connecting the test objects.
The output modules are inserted in a descending order beginning with plug-in
slot No. 7 (7, 6, ...), input modules are inserted in an ascending order beginning
with plug-in slot No. 1 (1, 2, ...).
On delivery the modules are provided with the module connector coded
according to the module type. For more detailed information please refer to the
corresponding module description in section 6 Technical Data and
Descriptions of IO Modules on page 45.

The following figure explains the debounce function. On the right-hand side of
the figure the debounce time is too short. As a result the debounced signal rises
to "high" once again, even while the input signal is still bouncing and does not
drop to low level until the expiry of another period Tdebounce.

Remedy
Check the source of power into
the device and assure that there is
power.

8.1 Optional Equipment
This section deals with the optional equipment for the OMICRON test unit
CMB IO-7.
The information given was valid at the time when the manual was issued.
8.1.1
CMGPS
CMGPS is a system extension that permits triggering of a test set at an exact
point in time using the GPS1 satellite timing signal.
Using two or more CMGPS devices, the test processes of two or more
CMB IO-7 or CMC test sets can be started simultaneously.
The power supply for CMGPS is supplied from the CMB IO-7 test unit.
