This edition has been hand selected from a longlist of products that have caught my eye in recent months. Perhaps it is the
prospect of a new season, a renewed sense of design and space that encourages sound new concepts. Presented here is a
collection of pieces that convey a respect for fine materials and challenge the usual conventions and traditions of the design.
INTERPRET, REINTERPRET
Here is a special edition interpretation of the Anglepoise Type75
table lamp, designed by Sir Kenneth Grange with a twist by Paul Smith.
The lamp combines the unmistakeable form and function of an
Anglepoise with the unique handprint of Britains foremost designer.
Paul Smiths strikingly colourful treatment is articulated through a
playful colour-by-component approach, whilst its no-frills, mechanical
functionality is clearly visible and intact. Paul Smith has created the
discordant, yet surprisingly complimentary combination of colours.
Unusual deep grey-olive tones are set against sharp accents of fuchsia
and lime, with cornflower and clay added to stunning effect.

PLAYFULNESS IN DESIGN
Normann Copenhagen presents the Circus, designed by Simon Legald. Circus is available in
four saturated colour combinations and is a modern answer to the traditional pouf with its

feel. The inspiration for Circus comes from the traditional Moroccan pillow, with focus on
handicraft and playfulness of construction. Circus consists of two different types of foam: A
hard foam to maintain the shape of the bottom part of the pouf and a softer foam on the upper
part for great seating comfort. Each design comes in a choice of grey, red, blue, green and is
made of PU foam and Gabriel textile Medley. The large Circus pouf comes in at H: 35 cm x L:

Lima Floral
PERUVIAN PASSION
B3 Designers, have designed the interiors for
newly opened restaurant, Lima Floral. Located
in Garrick Street, Covent Garden, Lima Floral
follows the success of Lima in Fitzrovia that
opened in July 2012. B3 Designers brief was to
develop an interior that stayed true to the core
values of the Peruvian dining offer with strong
references to nature, geometry and materials
of the earth. The 200 sq metre space takes
inspiration from Perus biodiversity, with a
variety of food sourced from land and sea. The
overall style is simple with emphasis on
geometry and materials of the earths natural
elements. The ground floor has an almost
monastic approach with geometric details and
feature lighting. In addition, an intricate metal
work screen with a natural, twig-like
composition is used to separate the entrance to
the dining area. The basement floor has deep,
rich midnight blue toned floral patterned tiles,
creating a backdrop to textured finishes. Key
features include bespoke wall lighting in
various shapes in the basement tear-drop
and round shaped - that refer to elements of
nature and materials of the earth which also
reference growth. They are illuminated through
glowing opaque glass with thin metal edging.
The ground floor bespoke lighting scheme is
geometric shapes and ceiling fixed creating a
light pattern, almost installation across the
ceiling. Special materials, such as hand-glazed
tiles on the back bar in the basement and blue
pearl granite used to the front of the kitchen
server counter on the ground floor and to the
front of the basement bar provide patterns as
well as texture as they reflect the floor tiles.

EXPERIMENT AND
EXPERIENCE
Drygate Brewing Co., the experiential craft
brewery, has opened in Glasgows East End,
with a refined industrial aesthetic developed by
design studio Graven Images. Housed in a twostorey warehouse built in the 1960s, the brewery
comprises a restaurant, bar, roof terrace,
events/gallery space, and Studio Kit area. The
visual identity was created by D8, who worked
with graduates from Glasgow School of Art to
produce artwork.
Starting with a blank stripped space, materials
focused on interplay between inherited
fragments of the buildings previous lives and
refined use of an industrial but warm palette. A
staircase made of concrete, which was
uncovered during renovation became a central
exposed feature of the scheme, and a beautifully
preserved tiled faade welcomes customers at
the entrance.
Throughout the interior Graven paired hard
surfaces against warmth: mild steel, cast
concrete, solid wood, and polished patinated
copper in the bar; hardwood herringbone
flooring butts up against a steel angle-frame
screen dividing the bar from the working
brewery; and surfaces of vibrantly coloured resin
and paint play off against metal mesh and
blackened steel.
The image of the seven peaks of the buildings
roof runs through all the bespoke furniture and
materiality as a detail theme always integral,
not applied.
Details were cleverly improvised as the works
progressed the bar, for instance, is clad in
timber shuttering which was originally used to
form the precise concrete panels cladding the
ground floors restaurant bar.

COVENT GARDEN
COUTURE
This Grade II listed apartment was formerly a
hospital and is situated adjacent to the buzzing
Covent Garden Market in London, spanning two
floors with an impressive double height
reception room. The apartment is 2500 sq. ft.
and includes four bedrooms and three
bathrooms. The briefing for the project was to
maximise the feeling of light and space within
the apartment. Kelly designed the apartment
with this at the forefront of her ideas, as well as
incorporating her signature style of luxuriously
neutral, sumptuous textures and plenty of
layering. One of the first decisions made was to
link all the different spaces by two metal
ribbons running from the entrance stairs, up to
the mezzanine and spreading along the
corridors. Once these striking black runners
were extended along the common areas, all the
different rooms and identities, which were
linked together could then be adapted. The
living room is composed of three seating areas,
which are set around a central dining table.
Each area has a different function and benefits
from different light during certain times of the
day. The sensation of space is emphasised by a
series of four chandeliers floating like a
dynamic sculpture in the central space. A new
bespoke sculptural metal stair was also
inserted and all spaces were refurbished
throughout with custom joinery and finishes.

Lawson Robb completed interior architecture
and design work on a three bedroom
Westminster townhouse. The clients brief
entailed creating a discreet and understated
home designed to a predominately masculine

this Westminster home, there is a common

SWEET AS HONEY
The Rayons is part of the new Provence range from Lalique and
consists of eight pieces depicting honeycomb in gold and clear
crystal. The piece pictured is limited edition and gilded in 22.5 carat
gold by the prestigious Ateliers Gohard located in Paris.
Harmoniously combining the purity of crystal and the nobility of gold,
the Rayons vase with gold leaves displays brilliant majesty. Through
a graphic play on repetition, the crystal honeycombs in clear crystal
are highlighted with 22.5K gold leaves applied by hand by craftsmen
from the prestigious Ateliers Gohard. Thus, this artwork initiates a
dialogue between the classicism of gold and the modernity of the
illuminated gold lines throughout the design. Since 1962, the
Ateliers Gohard located in Paris, which specialises in gilding works
of art, furniture and monuments, has restored the gilding of Chteau
de Versailles, the Invalides in Paris, the Municipal Theater of Rio de

of art is the result of high-precision craftsmanship, who apply with
expertise, patience and meticulousness one by one each delicate

TIME TRAVELLING
Fox and Hardy presents the Sailcloth Steamer Trunk. The trunk has
been covered in 100 per cent Egyptian cotton sailcloth and adorned with
recycled leather and brass. Designed and manufactured in Britain, the
Sailcloth Steamer Trunk is based on original designs from the golden
era of travel, when trunks were traditionally covered in canvas as
protection against general wear and tear and the rigours of sea voyages.
Every trunk is individually handmade, and the cotton sailcloth
manufactured specially for us by a sail loft based in the East Coast that
still, to this day, produces beautiful hand-stitched sails for some of the
finest yachts sailing the worlds oceans. They are finished with leather
trim and antique brass locks rescued from vintage luggage. The
interiors are lined with striped cotton ticking. No trunk is the same,
each acquiring its own character during the process of manufacture.
These beautifully crafted trunks, practical, compact and so elegant, will
adorn any modern living space and give pleasure for decades to come.
The trunk measures 85cm X 50cm X 56cm (33in X 19in X 22in), has a
capacity of 238 litres, and weighs 20kg.

MARBLE AT MAGRAF
Margraf was recently awarded the refurbishment of the
prestigious Grand Htel in Stockholm under the supervision of
the British Architects Richmond International. The company
supplied over 300 sq m of finest floor marble for the
refurbishment of the community spaces hosting the restaurant
areas of the hotel. This is the case of the Grand Buffet room of
the Veranda Restaurant, where the marble dcor is inspired by
traditional Swedish embroidery and antique fabrics. Bianco
Statuario is the dominant colour matched to a central trim
featuring a Grafite and Dark Emperador lacework pattern. The
dining room floor has a more geometric allure, but yet very
elegant with a 30 sq.m large floor medallion with a mosaic in
Grafite and Bianco Statuario marble. Polished Crema Marfil
slabs with tiny geometric Grafite inlays add to the work a
special finish. Facing the waterfront, with view on the Swedish
Royal Palace and the Gamla Stan (old Stockholm area), the
Grand Htel is known as one of the most exclusive Swedish

very strict with myself. As the client you
absolutely want the best and I believe I delivered
that for myself in Blakes Hotel.
WHO ARE YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATIONS?
I take inspiration from everything but to name but
a few, John Sargent, Sir John Soane, Tadao Ando,
the Japanese self-taught architect. I really do hop
around from place to place in life and so when it
comes to my inspirations, the same thing occurs.
One thing to note about our practice is that we are
architects, first and foremost. Get the architecture
right and you can go on to be as capricious and
silly as you wish after that; architecture first,
design and frivolity second. I believe that those
great inspirers are those who successfully
combined this.
HAVE YOU EVER DABBLED IN
OTHER FORMS OF DESIGN?
I owned and ran a couture company for a very
long time. We created beautiful clothes and
tailoring at Anouska Hempel Couture. If you can
design a four-poster bed, you can design a
person. Everything is linked in design.
Garden and landscape design is another area of
consideration. My design amusement comes
from everywhere and the garden is an extension
of how you live and how you see the home you live

ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES
In a rare opportunity Trgon take designers behind the scenes
to reveal the unique process they use to manufacture their
bespoke wood flooring. Trgon have established themselves as
one of the most exclusive manufactures of wood flooring in the
UK. This has been achieved in no small part by their ability to
offer an almost endless range of custom finishes. Each and
every board is hand finished in their London workshop by highly
skilled craftsman. Although their exact techniques are a closely
guarded secret they reveal that each board goes through no less
that sixteen separate stages before completion. This involves a
variety of techniques including varying degrees of sanding,
molding, undulating and staining. Trgons unique process
means that any type of colour, finish and design can be created
making them the choice for designers, architects and private

The Adora SL WP dishwasher was one of five V-ZUG products recently
awarded by the Plus X Award 2014. This powerful and groundbreaking
dishwasher really impressed the judges noting it for its innovation, high
quality, functionality, ease of use and ecology. The Adora SL WP
dishwasher also consumes just seven litres of water compared to hand
washing, which can use around 40 litres. A partial load programme
ensures that the machine is efficient even during smaller loads, reducing
the usage to 1-6 litres. It is able to be so efficient in part due to the clever
QuadSensor technology. The flexible and greater internal space of the
dishwasher allows it to be used economically and for different purposes to
suit the exact needs of the user. The dishwasher also has many other
popular features such as the 17-minute Sprint programme. Its ideal for
quickly washing items such as during a family party when you may need to
reuse items. The V-ZUG Adora SL WP dishwasher retails from 2,370

DUNCAN KETLEY, DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT, VISPRING,
TALKS TO JADE TILLEY ABOUT WELLNESS AND THE
COMPANYS DARWINIAN APPROACH TO DEVELOPMENT
JT: WHERE DID VISPRING BEGIN?
DK: In 1901, in our London factory, we invented the pocket sprung mattress. We now manufacture out of Devon,
but our craftsmen still use many of the same artisan skills they did back then to hand-make our beds.

HOW DO YOU CONTINUE TO INNOVATE?
Firstly, our entry into new global markets over the last few years has

JT: HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT YOU ARE ALWAYS ON TOP OF THE SCIENCE AND WELLBEING DESIGN
AGENDA?
DK: We make our own springs using the finest-grade Vanadium steel, which retains its strength and suppleness
for much longer than carbon steel thereby bringing a genuine longevity to our beds. Each spring is laid in our
signature honeycomb nesting which ensures that they work independently from one another. This means the
body is completely supported throughout the night.
Just as importantly we scour the globe to find the best natural fibers to make our beds. From the UK, we use
more Platinum Certified pure British fleece wool than any other bed maker and have exclusive use of real
Shetland wool. Looking further afield, we work with some of the worlds most celebrated and conscientious

SET TO SNOOZE
Since 1947 Jensen has produced beds in Norway with a strong
focus on sleep comfort. Many groundbreaking innovations in bed
manufacturing bear the Jensen signature and today this is more
evident than ever before. Combining the significance of traditional
craftsmanship with the best materials and solutions that the
market has to offer is a well-known fact in the business. In 1998,
a revolution in sleep comfort began. The Jensen Original Zone
system attracted considerable interest from both consumers and
retailers, so much so that one year after its introduction, all
Jensen beds featured the Zone System. Since the launch the zone
system has been synonymous with the Jensen trademark.
Jensen Original Zone System provides proper support for the
entire body when at rest. It provides support for the curve of the
back, in combination with a soft shoulder zone, which is the key to
an optimal sleep experience. The zone system is based on selfevident and natural principles; that is, most people are broader in
the hip and shoulder areas and narrower and heavier around the
waist. 01823 444300 | www.jensenbeds.co.uk

WARMTH AND LUXURY
The Sterlingham Co Ltd has launched a brand new design to
its already celebrated range of low-energy, handcrafted towel
warmers. The Chatsworth has been developed as part of the
companys continued expansion as its luxury bathroom
accessories are exported to locations around the world.
Commissioned to refurbish a number of old 1930s electric
towel warmers for Chatsworth House, The Sterlingham Co
Ltd stripped the old chrome and added its state of the art
componentry before re-plating in polished nickel and fitting
its custom low-energy heating elements. The Chatsworth
model was inspired by the work done at Chatsworth House,
the model combines 32mm side legs with 38mm rails and a
wall fixing method typical of the period. These towel warmers

My Icon
MY ICON
CHRISTOPHER JENNER, JENNER STUDIO,
REVEALS HIS DESIGN ICON
Since 2010 Christopher has become renowned for his work with luxury
brands looking to define themselves in the global marketplace.
Christopher Jenner creates considered designs to meet his clients
strategic objectives. His aptitude for storytelling and knowledge of
artisanal skills allow him to capture the essence of a brand. Evident in
the studios global portfolio of projects is the importance of
ethnography and identity. In 2012 Christopher presented his first
acclaimed installation The Looking Glass House and the toy-like
collection Swell at the Salone del Mobile, Milano. The same year he
was awarded British Breakthrough Talent for 2012 by FX magazine,
and in 2013 was appointed Creative Director for the Eurostar. In 2014
Christopher presented The Cloud at the Salone del Mobile, which
was recognised as a highlight of the programme.
WHO IS YOUR DESIGN ICON?
Josiah Wedgwood
WHAT IS HE MOST FAMOUS FOR?
Josiah Wedgwood is most famous for his step changing experimental work in ceramics.
Due to a childhood illness (small pox) he was unable to follow the traditional route of the
potter to the wheel, forcing him concentrate his efforts in the design and innovation of
this most traditional craft; a classic case of facing adversity from a creative perspective.
With his business partner he is credited with developing the first true pottery factory in
England and the birth of the Golden Age of English ceramics.
HOW WAS WEDGWOODS WORK RECEIVED DURING
THE PERIOD IN WHICH THEY WERE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL?
The success of the Wedgwood potteries occurred alongside the advent of the Industrial
revolution, this time of innovation and change was directly reflected in the quality and
nature of their wares. New techniques and methods ensured products were well ahead
of their time and truly transformative. Typically of the time, the patronage of Royalty
ensured success and fame. The naming of Queens Ware with the favour of Queen
Charlotte, and orders from European Royalty catapulted Josiah into the history books and is
seen as the most famous potter of all time. The Wedgwood Portland Vase is the
culmination of this search for perfection through innovation.
WHY HAVE YOU CHOSEN JOSIAH WEDGWOOD AS YOUR ICON?
Josiah Wedgwood was more than a craftsman; he was a brand builder with an obsessive
attention to detail and a profound perspective on life. What attracts me most to his work is its
simple beauty, a beauty born out of the desire to innovate, a passion to push the boundaries of
crafted possibility.
WHICH PROJECTS FROM YOUR OWN PORTFOLIO
DEMONSTRATES A NOD TO THE WORK OF WEDGWOOD?
I feel the layering of materials and textures are an obvious nod to the characteristics of Wedgwood. A
confident use of colour and texture create innovative material expressions. Josiah Wedgwood was a
formidable brand builder; much of our commercial work is centred on expressing our clients, capturing their
values through both products and spaces.
IF YOU COULD BE REMEMBERED FOR ONE ELEMENT OF YOUR DESIGN,
WHAT WOULD YOU HOPE IT WOULD BE?
Making a difference to the way our clients represent themselves, and changing the way people feel,
if only for a moment.

ORIGINAL
TECHNIQUES, TODAY
First established in Castle Cary in 1837 by John Boyd, the company
continues the tradition of horsehair weaving using the original
looms and techniques. Horsehair fabrics are used mainly for
upholstery of both classical and modern upholstery. Originally used
by Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Sir Edwin Lutyens and Charles
Rennie Mackintosh, as well as for Biedermeier and Empire style
furniture, this traditional English fabric has inspired architects and
designers all around the world, such as Alvar Aalto, Josef Frank
and Saarinen. Horsehair fabrics are highly regarded for their
quality, durability and lustre which is unequalled by any other
natural fabric, as well as their inherent fire resistant properties. The

INTUITIVE DESIGN
KIVO, designed exclusively for Herman Miller by Alexander Lorenz,
takes on the challenges faced by the ever-changing landscape of the
modern office. KIVO was created to provide a solution to the dynamic
workplace whilst also offering flexibility for change in both work
activity and behaviour. A rise in open plan floorplates and a decrease
in private office spaces calls for a balance to be struck between
individual and group needs. Herman Miller developed and validated a
concise range of KIVO settings to meet these needs in combination
with a variety of products from its portfolio. The lightweight triangular
modules that form Alexander Lorenzs innovative new system divides
existing areas, creating and emphasising places to work. It supports
the intuitive nature in which people work, outlining spaces where
people can be creative or find a quiet space to escape and think. The
design creates a powerful statement and comes in a variety of finishes
from bold colours to lighter hues. KIVOs uneven external profile
combined with acoustic dampening materials built on a resilient steel
skeleton reflects and reduces sound, creating a private hub.

PURE ESSENSSE
JS Air Curtains is launching Essensse, an attractive and economic
air curtain suitable for a range of environments from small shops
and restaurants to office buildings and banks. Air curtains seal an
entrance with an invisible barrier of air, preventing cold air entering
in the winter and air conditioning escaping in the summer while the
door is open. A comfortable temperature can then be maintained
within the room and a buildings energy costs reduced. Essensse
can deliver up to 2,900m of air, enabling it to seal doorways up to
2.5m high when mounted above an entrance. Easy to install, the
compact unit is finished in white RAL 9010 as standard with other
colours available on request. Essensse can incorporate water or
electric heating elements and is available as an ambient unheated
model. Latest hotwire heating technology can provide up to
19.1kW/h with low pressure hot water units providing 18.6kW/h. The
air curtain is controlled via a wall-mounted controller with multiple
units able to be operated from the same control system. A radio
frequency (RF) option is also available. A special design air outlet
provides the best possible seal across a doorway.01903 858656
A WAVE OF INNOVATION
British Smart Home technology developer LightwaveRF has
introduced a new handheld remote, which allows users to lock
linked LightwaveRF sockets, dimmers and plug-ins at the touch of
a button to prevent them from being turned on or off manually.
Called the Lightwave Locker, the compact handheld zapper can
also be used to isolate these devices from the rest of the system to
prevent control from any other hand held remote or Smartphone
within range. The company has said that this new facility will
improve home safety concerns, particularly the possibility of
access by small children. A major feature of the LightwaveRF
Connect Series is that all these beautifully designed products use
wireless RF signals for switching and control, are fully compatible
with each other, and can be retro-fitted at any time. Any system
can therefore be completely modular, allowing home owners to
add as much or as little as they feel appropriate. Systems can be
built up starting with just one socket or dimmer in one room,
adding more elements over time to create an entire Smart Home.
