MONDRIAN MEETS TOM DIXON

MONDRIAN LONDON REVEALS SPA CONCEPT AT AGUA BATHHOUSE & SPA

Morgans Hotel Group revealed agua Bathhouse &
Spa in September, set in Mondrian London at Sea
Containers. Embracing the Hollywood glamour,
renegade origins and bold nature of the hotel group
and its aspirational Mondrian brand, this boutique
bathhouse creates a distinct social hub for guests.
Debuting its new concept, the Spa Playground, agua
at Mondrian London promotes a social, multi-sensory
experience that encourages both individual
treatments and fun with friends. agua at Mondrian
London will offer a new, unorthodox dimension into
the spa arena that embraces the heritage and spirit
of community found in Roman spa culture. This spa is
all about late 1970s influenced Glamrock and will
play a seasonally developed soundtrack to represent
the spas retro vibe. agua at Mondrian London will
also serve champagne, freshly prepared beverages
and cuisine to suit all tastes and moods; healthy
guests can either enjoy a guilt-free raw menu created
by the in-house Executive Chef, or indulge in vintage
style desserts such as organic chocolate fondues and
gourmet ice-cream sundaes.

The cutting edge design of agua at Mondrian is

envisioned by Design Research Studio under the
creative direction of Tom Dixon, and boasts six
spacious treatment suites and Spa & Glamour
Lounges, as well as rain shower steam baths.
A striking floor-to-ceiling copper teardrop installation
reflects Roman water vessels in the subterranean
Spa Lounge, which also boasts an expansive,
custom-designed sofa filling an entire corner of the
room, mimicking rippled watermarks over sand. This
allows guests to lounge, lie or sit, either alone or in
groups. Further Roman touches can be found
throughout agua at Mondrian London, including the
risqu Tom Dixon commissioned nude Renaissance
Man sculpture. Based on a Neo Classical Roman
bust, the wood-sculpted nude is the personification of
aguas new rebellious playground concept: relaxed,
body-confident, professional yet spirited.
This boutique urban spa uses curving walls, luminous
pathways and trippy visuals to play on the underwater
theme, with dappled water projections and lighting
effects transforming the space into a maritime
adventure that guests wont want to leave.

Home Bakery is the brainchild of local Emirati, Hind

Al Mulla. The concept originated as a modest baking
business from her kitchen table, and quickly grew
with overflowing orders from a loyal established
customer base and a barrage of new enquiries in the
form of fanatic social media followers. Hind soon
realised her ambition to turn her hobby into a
business and approached Blacksheep to create its
brand identity. Home Bakerys modest and authentic
approach offers a home for traditional delights and
familiar treats, in contrast with Dubais typical
modern aesthetic. Blacksheep created a brand DNA
based on the core value Simple Indulgence. From

this a visual identity was created, using three

different design elements all derived from the
emotionally evocative and sensory pleasure
experienced when we eat sweet foods. The interior
design reflects the origins and values of the brand,
incorporating a house-like structure within the
internal framework of the restaurant, which curves
inwards to act as bench seating and creates an
atmosphere of homeliness and comfort. Honesty in
the earthiness of the materials and furnishings
including rustic oak timber, thick padded fabric, and
worn leather allows the simple deliciousness of the
products to speak for themselves.

A NEW WORKING SPACE

HLM Interiors has completed the interior design for a
new Workspace property ScreenWorks on Highbury
Grove in North London. Workspace provides business
premises for new and growing companies across
London. The property incorporates a reception area on
the ground floor and Club Workspace area for
businesses in their infancy, which has 24-hour access
and offers a drop-in space for individuals as an initial
step for their business. The concept behind the
reception design is based around the industrial
heritage of the building; it was formerly used to
manufacture some of the earliest
radios and televisions. It integrates
this history with a calming

atmosphere; created by incorporating Scandinavian

organic soft shaped furniture in natural tones, against
the subtle and understated concrete grey flooring. The
ground floor also has four meeting rooms that can be
hired, all with an original theme a first for Workspace
and a statement piece in each: The Games Room, a
20s Room, Misled, and a 50s Room. As well as the
interior design, HLM was also responsible for styling
each area and including the four meeting rooms;
handpicking all accessories down to the last detail;
including artwork, glassware and historical objects.

wanted to create something that would truly capture the

unique collaboration and chemistry of the four leading
chefs. A bespoke wordmark; crafted out of a variety of
different typefaces represents just that. Purposefully
placed across three levels, it represents the stages of a
journey whilst the punctuation or beauty mark denotes
the pause that the environment creates for the guest as
well as giving a subtle hint towards the femininity and
beauty of the concept. Always surrounded by space, the
overall identity reflects the sanctuary in which the
environment envelops the guest. This notion of space
can also be seen throughout the restaurants interior,
evoking feelings of tranquility, peace and calm, an
escape within an escape. The layout of the restaurant
itself is based on natural organisation and freedom of

help connect the spaces from a central point creating
pockets of natural rest. Antique Murano glass shades
appear to float effortlessly complimenting the calm
atmosphere of the safe haven whilst giving it a certain
ethereal quality.

ART DECO EATERY

BuckleyGrayYeoman has completed the latest in a
long line of restaurants for Nandos. The eatery in
Loughton, Essex, is the ninth the practice has
completed for the popular high-street restaurant
chain. Nandos Loughton occupies a 1920s former
car dealership on the junction of Loughtons High
Street and Station Road. BuckleyGrayYeomans
design responds to the unique Art Deco
architecture of the restaurant from first principles,
and the circular layout of the restaurant is taken
from the curved shopfront that gives the restaurant
real presence on the corner.

CLASSIC BRASSERIE
Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings is a
Modern All-day Brasserie and Bar that
opened in Clerkenwell, mid-September.
Situated just off Exmouth Market, Bourne &
Hollingsworth Buildings features a
restaurant and greenhouse, a relaxed caf
area, characterful private rooms and a large
bar serving the brands famous cocktails.
Taking inspiration from the faded grandeur of
a stately home, the venues design combines
unusual textures and modern shades with

trailing plants and rich fabrics. The design of

Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings has been
a collaboration between the in-house creative
team, Lionel Real de Azua of Red Deer
Architects and Louise Davies of Box 9
Architects (Riding House Caf, Pizza East,
Soho House Berlin). Purposefully moving
away from the over-thought and increasingly
faddy designs that have flooded the London
restaurant and bar scene in recent years,
Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings will
feature pared back, classic interiors that are
light, clean and almost minimalist in their

design. Throughout the 220m2 space,

whitewashed floorboards, classic cornicing
and light walls rendered with muslin are
juxtaposed with bespoke ironwork, warm
wood and antique armchairs and sofas
reupholstered with thick patterned fabrics
like Kilim and Hessian. The cocktail bar
opens onto the street and the leafy park
beyond via huge windows and doors.
Influenced by those typically seen in a Grand
Caf, the bar itself will feature bespoke
concrete paneling, an oak handrail, and a
beautiful white marble mosaic bar top.

Shortlist

Shortlist.
This edition has been hand selected from a longlist of products that have caught my eye in recent months. Perhaps it is the
prospect of a new season, a renewed sense of design and space that encourages sound new concepts. Presented here is a
collection of pieces that convey a respect for fine materials and challenge the usual conventions and traditions of the design.

INTERPRET, REINTERPRET
Here is a special edition interpretation of the Anglepoise Type75
table lamp, designed by Sir Kenneth Grange with a twist by Paul Smith.
The lamp combines the unmistakeable form and function of an
Anglepoise with the unique handprint of Britains foremost designer.
Paul Smiths strikingly colourful treatment is articulated through a
playful colour-by-component approach, whilst its no-frills, mechanical
functionality is clearly visible and intact. Paul Smith has created the
discordant, yet surprisingly complimentary combination of colours.
Unusual deep grey-olive tones are set against sharp accents of fuchsia
and lime, with cornflower and clay added to stunning effect.
Dimensions: Reach 660mm. Shade height 195mm, Shade diameter

four saturated colour combinations and is a modern answer to the traditional pouf with its
rounded shape and clean graphic lines. It has a tight and simple design with a soft and inviting
feel. The inspiration for Circus comes from the traditional Moroccan pillow, with focus on
handicraft and playfulness of construction. Circus consists of two different types of foam: A
hard foam to maintain the shape of the bottom part of the pouf and a softer foam on the upper
part for great seating comfort. Each design comes in a choice of grey, red, blue, green and is
made of PU foam and Gabriel textile Medley. The large Circus pouf comes in at H: 35 cm x L:

ALIEN ENCOUNTER
OR OLD FRIEND?
The Mossi vase, launched in 1933 by Rene Lalique in plain
glass, has been one of the best selling creations from
Lalique. The iconic piece plays on the contrast between the
brilliance of its caobochons and the frosting of its
foundation and looks as modern today in any interior as it
did back in 1933 when it was first created. The Grand Mossi
Vase launched for AW 2014 in gold lustre crystal priced at
9,400, following the Moss vase in midnight blue crystal
launched for SS 2014 priced at 1,990. The kaleidoscopic
effect of the Mossi is both a stroke of creative genius and a
feat of technical mastery. The vase is an ideal synthesis of
modern trends in the applied arts. v www.lalique.com

(Un)Forbidden City from product brand Alessi. Its height and sculptured shape
suggest that it can be used not only as a cake stand but also as a tray or table
centrepiece. The opportunities are endless with this unusual, twisted piece of
tableware. With baking enjoying a resurgence in British culture, Alessi, along with Ma
Yan Song have crafted a beautiful and unexpected twist on the traditional cake stand
that fulfils and goes beyond its purpose. Beijing born architect Ma Yan Song has been
recognised as a important voice of a new generation of architects. Prior to founding
MAD in 2004, Yansong Ma worked as a project designer with Zaha Hadid Architects in

Lima Floral

PERUVIAN PASSION
B3 Designers, have designed the interiors for
newly opened restaurant, Lima Floral. Located
in Garrick Street, Covent Garden, Lima Floral
follows the success of Lima in Fitzrovia that
opened in July 2012. B3 Designers brief was to
develop an interior that stayed true to the core
values of the Peruvian dining offer with strong
references to nature, geometry and materials
of the earth. The 200 sq metre space takes
inspiration from Perus biodiversity, with a
variety of food sourced from land and sea. The
overall style is simple with emphasis on
geometry and materials of the earths natural
elements. The ground floor has an almost
monastic approach with geometric details and
feature lighting. In addition, an intricate metal
work screen with a natural, twig-like
composition is used to separate the entrance to
the dining area. The basement floor has deep,
rich midnight blue toned floral patterned tiles,
creating a backdrop to textured finishes. Key
features include bespoke wall lighting in
various shapes in the basement tear-drop
and round shaped - that refer to elements of
nature and materials of the earth which also
reference growth. They are illuminated through
glowing opaque glass with thin metal edging.
The ground floor bespoke lighting scheme is
geometric shapes and ceiling fixed creating a
light pattern, almost installation across the
ceiling. Special materials, such as hand-glazed
tiles on the back bar in the basement and blue
pearl granite used to the front of the kitchen
server counter on the ground floor and to the
front of the basement bar provide patterns as
well as texture as they reflect the floor tiles.

Drygate Brewing Co., the experiential craft
brewery, has opened in Glasgows East End,
with a refined industrial aesthetic developed by
design studio Graven Images. Housed in a twostorey warehouse built in the 1960s, the brewery
comprises a restaurant, bar, roof terrace,
events/gallery space, and Studio Kit area. The
visual identity was created by D8, who worked
with graduates from Glasgow School of Art to
produce artwork.
Starting with a blank stripped space, materials
focused on interplay between inherited
fragments of the buildings previous lives and
refined use of an industrial but warm palette. A
staircase made of concrete, which was
uncovered during renovation became a central
exposed feature of the scheme, and a beautifully
preserved tiled faade welcomes customers at
the entrance.
Throughout the interior Graven paired hard
surfaces against warmth: mild steel, cast
concrete, solid wood, and polished patinated
copper in the bar; hardwood herringbone
flooring butts up against a steel angle-frame
screen dividing the bar from the working
brewery; and surfaces of vibrantly coloured resin
and paint play off against metal mesh and
blackened steel.
The image of the seven peaks of the buildings
roof runs through all the bespoke furniture and
materiality as a detail theme always integral,
not applied.
Details were cleverly improvised as the works
progressed the bar, for instance, is clad in
timber shuttering which was originally used to
form the precise concrete panels cladding the
ground floors restaurant bar.

Covent Garden residence

COVENT GARDEN
COUTURE
This Grade II listed apartment was formerly a
hospital and is situated adjacent to the buzzing
Covent Garden Market in London, spanning two
floors with an impressive double height
reception room. The apartment is 2500 sq. ft.
and includes four bedrooms and three
bathrooms. The briefing for the project was to
maximise the feeling of light and space within
the apartment. Kelly designed the apartment
with this at the forefront of her ideas, as well as
incorporating her signature style of luxuriously
neutral, sumptuous textures and plenty of
layering. One of the first decisions made was to
link all the different spaces by two metal
ribbons running from the entrance stairs, up to
the mezzanine and spreading along the
corridors. Once these striking black runners
were extended along the common areas, all the
different rooms and identities, which were
linked together could then be adapted. The
living room is composed of three seating areas,
which are set around a central dining table.
Each area has a different function and benefits
from different light during certain times of the
day. The sensation of space is emphasised by a
series of four chandeliers floating like a
dynamic sculpture in the central space. A new
bespoke sculptural metal stair was also
inserted and all spaces were refurbished
throughout with custom joinery and finishes.

Westminster townhouse

WESTMINSTER
DOMAIN
Lawson Robb completed interior architecture
and design work on a three bedroom
Westminster townhouse. The clients brief
entailed creating a discreet and understated
home designed to a predominately masculine
brief. They were asked to work on a new home
trend and create a cigar room inspired by Le
Fumoir at Claridges London Hotel. Throughout
this Westminster home, there is a common
thread of using a rich palette and meticulous
detailing with nothing too elaborate or too plain.
Lawson Robb mixed stunning Georgian features
and architectural heritage with modern unique
materials and textures. The cigar room is one of
several man-only zones created together with
a cinema room, library, office and sauna.

THE RIGHT IMPRESSION

Founded in 1997, YO! Sushi brought to London the unique
concept of a Japanese sushi bar that delivered food to
customers via a conveyor belt travelling at 8cm per second and
is the original and most famous sushi brand with restaurants
throughout the UK. The company has grown from its London
base where it now has over 25 restaurants to an international
iconic success with restaurants worldwide serving over five
million customers a year. Yo! Sushi who have a reputation for
delivering a quality product, carry that through in the standard
of materials used in fitting out their restaurants, and
accordingly specified Kemmlit metal lockers for the staff
rooms at their Baker Street, High Street Kensington and
Ellesmere locations. These ergonomically designed and robust
lockers feature sloping tops, digital locking systems and bench
seating and are part of an extensive range of high performance
cubicle and locker systems from Kemmlit UK who also provide
a design, project management and installation service.

THE QUIET MARK OF APPROVAL

The Quiet Mark is an international stamp of approval from the UK Noise Abatement
Society recognising technology that has been designed to reduce noise. Unwanted noise
isnt only about volume levels, tone and individual perception also play a part in defining
sound quality. Salamanders research and development team in Sunderland use the
very latest pump technology to constantly refine the sound performance as a key
element of the companys entire product development programme. Launched in 2012,
HomeBoost, quite literally, reshaped the shower pump market and, still, leads the way
in domestic mains booster pump technology. Where there is poor water pressure in the
home, HomeBoost can be fitted directly onto the incoming mains water supply to
increase water flow up to a constant 12 litres per minute, compliant with the latest
water fitting regulations. The award of Quiet Mark to Salamanders HomeBoost pump is
an official endorsement that it is one of the quietest products in its category. Innovative
motor technology coupled with efficient impellor design means that water passes
through the pump quietly and more effectively. www.salamanderpumps.co.uk

RED DOT WINNER

GETTING THE JOB DONE

Nya Nordiska continues its winning streak with another award. The new
decoration fabric, Batumi CS, has been awarded for its well-made product
design with the Red Dot Design Award 2014. Batumi CS won due to its
surprising combination of transparent Trevira CS fleece and colour intense
print design. With this new product, Nya Nordiska has created an airy
fabric, which stands between textile and paper. Sybilla Hansl, Managing
Director and Creative Director of the design team of Nya Nordiska
commented, Something which has been achieving great effects in fashion
for quite some time can also be realised within your own home. Our
colourful fabric guarantees a positive atmosphere and provides the
freshness of the summer. The three-dimensionality of the graphic pattern
underlines the delicate colour gradients of the cubes. With Batumi CS, Nya
Nordiska has once again proven how the clear expression of forms,
zeitgeist and sophisticated materials can be combined. www.nya.com

BIID Update

The Ion Luxury Adventure Hotel, Iceland, designed by Minarc

A RISING STAR
DANIEL HOPWOOD, PRESIDENT OF THE BIID, DISCUSSES THE RISING STAR OF THE
INTERIOR DESIGNER, FROM LITTLE KNOWN DECORATOR TO SAVVY, INDUSTRY LEADING AUTHOR OF DESIGN

The profile of the interior

designer is now greater than
it has ever been, as those who
attended my talk, Why the
interior designer has become
essential, at Decorex
International 2014 will already be aware.
At Decorex, I proposed the idea that, increasingly,
the role of the individual interior designer is proving
paramount. In particular, I argued that whilst design
flair is itself a significant asset to the designer, more
recently, education and experience have proven the
most effective tools for the transition into successful
practice and establishing a reliable reputation as a
designer. In fact, much of the work of the British
Institute of Interior Design (BIID) focuses on
facilitating its members with such tools as these to
develop within the industry. Through such initiatives
as on-going CPD sessions and the launch of our
Professional Pathway, the Institute is consistently
encouraging and enabling best practice.
As part of its dedication to its community, the BIID
supplies beneficial resources such as the latest

updated Concise Agreement for Interior Design

Services (CID/14), launched this month. Designed to
be comprehensive and comprehensible, CID/14 is a
simplified version of the industry standard form of
appointment. The contract is developed by
designers, for designers to ensure its userfriendliness and effectiveness. With all of these
measures in place and being enacted on a regular
basis, it is little wonder that the profession of the
interior designer is becoming ever more recognised
and respected.
The profession also has been in the media spotlight
recently, with television shows such as BBC2s The
Great Interior Design Challenge, on which I am
fortunate enough to be a judge, playing an important
part in stimulating broader public interest in the
industry. The show has undoubtedly been a hit,
attracting feature coverage for interior design in
national and regional newspapers. With the second
series about to begin, The Great Interior Design
Challenge showcases the best that amateur interior
design has to offer, whilst serving as a potential
springboard for talented amateurs.

Many professions have Institutes; they are the

hallmark of a profession. Belonging to the Institute
demonstrates to our clients that they are dealing
with a professional who is properly insured, and has
met the rigorous standards demanded by BIID
membership. It creates an immediate platform of
trust between the two parties. It also follows that the
stronger we are as an Institute, then the stronger
and healthier we will all be both as independent
businesses, and as a profession. The more powerful
our collective voice then the more we can help define
and shape interior design in the future.
I believe the profile of the interior designer is at an
all-time high. Our profession is more visible and
valuable than ever before, in both the media and
public eye. Meanwhile, the industry grows from
strength to strength. Our members are consistently
embracing BIID guidance on best practice and
development opportunities to provide a professional
service that combines competence and creativity,
ensuring the reputation of the interior designer as
an indispensable individual.

an online platform that could help them
articulate their vision for their home and to find
the right professionals to make it a reality. By
applying technology, Houzz has knocked down
the barriers between homeowners wanting to
improve their homes and the professionals who
can help them to do so.
Houzz launched its UK platform in July and is
already having an impact on the UK home design
market; almost one million people visit the site
each month to hire design and renovation
professionals, find inspiration, get advice, source
products, and effectively manage a project from
start to finish, from decorating a room to building
a custom home. UK homeowners on Houzz have
big plans for renovation and design projects: 82

build an addition or renovate in the same
timeframe (Houzz & Home Survey, 2014).
There are more than 8,000 UK home renovation
and design professionals already using Houzz to
build their brands via a free professional profile.
The profile works like an online portfolio and
showcases their projects alongside customer
reviews, connecting them with new clients, both
globally and locally. To make it even easier to
manage an online presence, Houzz has recently
launched Site Designer. This free tool enables
professionals to create a beautifully designed
website in minutes, using the photos, reviews and
other content thats already in their Houzz profile.
Houzz has a rich, vibrant and welcoming
community. Professionals can network and chat
with other professionals via the pro-to-pro
discussion room and use the platform to
collaborate with clients. A client can put together
an ideabook with all their favourite inspirational
images and share it with their designer, who can
instantly get a sense for the clients tastes and
styles. An Ideabook full of ultra contemporary,
high gloss kitchens? Out go the country-style
cabinets and terracotta tiles! This approach
minimises any crossed wires and allows the

design process to continue between meetings;

everything is kept in one place, and
communication is easy and efficient. Best of all,
the Houzz mobile and tablet apps mean both
parties can work on the go.
Houzz is already proving its value to interior
designers across the UK. We hope to see you
there!

SWEET AS HONEY
The Rayons is part of the new Provence range from Lalique and
consists of eight pieces depicting honeycomb in gold and clear
crystal. The piece pictured is limited edition and gilded in 22.5 carat
gold by the prestigious Ateliers Gohard located in Paris.
Harmoniously combining the purity of crystal and the nobility of gold,
the Rayons vase with gold leaves displays brilliant majesty. Through
a graphic play on repetition, the crystal honeycombs in clear crystal
are highlighted with 22.5K gold leaves applied by hand by craftsmen
from the prestigious Ateliers Gohard. Thus, this artwork initiates a
dialogue between the classicism of gold and the modernity of the
illuminated gold lines throughout the design. Since 1962, the
Ateliers Gohard located in Paris, which specialises in gilding works
of art, furniture and monuments, has restored the gilding of Chteau
de Versailles, the Invalides in Paris, the Municipal Theater of Rio de

of art is the result of high-precision craftsmanship, who apply with
expertise, patience and meticulousness one by one each delicate

TIME TRAVELLING
Fox and Hardy presents the Sailcloth Steamer Trunk. The trunk has
been covered in 100 per cent Egyptian cotton sailcloth and adorned with
recycled leather and brass. Designed and manufactured in Britain, the
Sailcloth Steamer Trunk is based on original designs from the golden
era of travel, when trunks were traditionally covered in canvas as
protection against general wear and tear and the rigours of sea voyages.
Every trunk is individually handmade, and the cotton sailcloth
manufactured specially for us by a sail loft based in the East Coast that
still, to this day, produces beautiful hand-stitched sails for some of the
finest yachts sailing the worlds oceans. They are finished with leather
trim and antique brass locks rescued from vintage luggage. The
interiors are lined with striped cotton ticking. No trunk is the same,
each acquiring its own character during the process of manufacture.
These beautifully crafted trunks, practical, compact and so elegant, will
adorn any modern living space and give pleasure for decades to come.
The trunk measures 85cm X 50cm X 56cm (33in X 19in X 22in), has a
capacity of 238 litres, and weighs 20kg.

MARBLE AT MAGRAF
Margraf was recently awarded the refurbishment of the
prestigious Grand Htel in Stockholm under the supervision of
the British Architects Richmond International. The company
supplied over 300 sq m of finest floor marble for the
refurbishment of the community spaces hosting the restaurant
areas of the hotel. This is the case of the Grand Buffet room of
the Veranda Restaurant, where the marble dcor is inspired by
traditional Swedish embroidery and antique fabrics. Bianco
Statuario is the dominant colour matched to a central trim
featuring a Grafite and Dark Emperador lacework pattern. The
dining room floor has a more geometric allure, but yet very
elegant with a 30 sq.m large floor medallion with a mosaic in
Grafite and Bianco Statuario marble. Polished Crema Marfil
slabs with tiny geometric Grafite inlays add to the work a
special finish. Facing the waterfront, with view on the Swedish
Royal Palace and the Gamla Stan (old Stockholm area), the

Anouska Hempel

depths of Anouskas illustrious career.

Here, I recall the interview I recently
experienced with Anouska. Her passion for
design is clear - her quick wit and charm
undeniable.
WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY OF
SOMETHING YOU DESIGNED?
When I was five I put an egg in small cup with a
teaspoon positioned through the handle. This was
the beginning. I have always re-arranged items
and moved things around to play with their
composition and order. I like it; it creates change
and interest and establishes a different
connection with the item and the room.
I can be influenced by things that I do like just as
well as those that I dont. I think this is important,
to appreciate the good and bad, the pretty and the
ugly. It helps to define what you love as something
particularly special and to force you as a creative
thinker to create something wonderful out of
something dull.

WHICH DESIGN SCHOOL DID YOU

TRAIN AT (IF AT ALL)?
I never had any training in any of the disciplines,
which I practice now. It just wasnt the way then. I
practice what I preach now and all of my design
ideas were founded in the fantasy world in my
mind. In many ways I feel as those I live in a
strange fantasy world that has become my reality,
what a joy that is!
HOW HAVE DESIGN SCHOOLS
EVOLVED IN YOUR EYES?
Everything is computerised. For me, design
schools are neither here nor there. Its a poignant
reality but I do feel that some art schools have
lost their magic and that is something that should
always remain in design magic. The design
school world has become a big machine; it is too
commercial, too available and not free enough to
explore what art and design and style and beauty
really is through the eyes of unique designers.
Who knows that their potential may be when
theyre sat behind a computer screen for the

entirety of their education? I fear that square eyes

and square shoulders is the future for some.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PROFESSIONAL
DESIGN COMMISSION?
I honestly cannot remember. Ive been designing
houses and hotels, sorting peoples lives out for
so long that it all feels as though it was at once. I
am connected to the clients I work with and their
needs and wants remain fresh in my mind.
I guess one of the first commissions I worked on,
to give an answer to the question, was my own. I
was the client. It was Blakes Hotel. I think its
always a good idea to design for yourself. You
have the world at your fingertips. You set the
brief, you demand changes from yourself, you
demand better, and your mind is constantly
evolving with the design.
With Blakes in particular, I felt as though the
world was at my fingertips. There was nonsense
and happiness within the project, which I love
Im always seeking for some nonsense in
amongst the beauty of the design. I was equally

Designer Profile
very strict with myself. As the client you
absolutely want the best and I believe I delivered
that for myself in Blakes Hotel.
WHO ARE YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATIONS?
I take inspiration from everything but to name but
a few, John Sargent, Sir John Soane, Tadao Ando,
the Japanese self-taught architect. I really do hop
around from place to place in life and so when it
comes to my inspirations, the same thing occurs.
One thing to note about our practice is that we are
architects, first and foremost. Get the architecture
right and you can go on to be as capricious and
silly as you wish after that; architecture first,
design and frivolity second. I believe that those
great inspirers are those who successfully
combined this.
HAVE YOU EVER DABBLED IN
OTHER FORMS OF DESIGN?
I owned and ran a couture company for a very
long time. We created beautiful clothes and
tailoring at Anouska Hempel Couture. If you can
design a four-poster bed, you can design a
person. Everything is linked in design.
Garden and landscape design is another area of
consideration. My design amusement comes
from everywhere and the garden is an extension
of how you live and how you see the home you live

in. It is just as vital as inside, so to design an

interior is to nurture and cultivate an exterior.
WHERE IS THE MAJORITY OF
YOUR WORK BASED?
Anywhere. Singapore, Chile, USA, Germany, the
list goes on. I have a fantastic team who I couldnt
do all of this without. We have all grown as a
company and it is down to everyones dedication
that we can work as far afield as we do. It is a
pleasure and an honour to work for our global
clients.
HAVE YOU EVER WORKED OR LIVED ANYWHERE
ELSE? IF SO, HOW HAS THIS HELPED TO SHAPE
AND INFLUENCE YOUR IDEAS ON DESIGN?
I live on a boat! The Beluga, my beautiful black
and tan Turkish Gulet. It is from here that I base
myself, so really Ive lived everywhere there is an
ocean. Ive travelled to Istanbul to work on a
palace there. We charter all over.
DO YOU TAKE DESIGN INSPIRATION
FROM THE SEA?
No the seas looks like the sea. It stabilises me the sea and the boat together. There is also a
sense of danger on the water, which exhilarates
you and makes you focus.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR DESIGN STYLE?

I am theatrical and elegant, with a firm overview
of strictness in every project that comes with
being an architect. I like to mix this in and stir it
up with the fashion world. The trick is never to
change the personality of the client your working
with but to heighten their very best attributes
through beautiful design.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST DESIGN
COMMISSION TO DATE?
Fifty hectares in Bahia, Brazil. I felt like a
Pharaoh I delved so deep into the earth for that
project. We really worked into the bowels of the
earth, which is a whole other experience. The
project actually closed for a time but we hope to
bring it back to life in 2015 to continue our work.
IF YOU HADNT BECOME AN INTERIOR
DESIGNER WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?
I feel I may have been a brain surgeon or
something of that ilk. I like digging around and
into inside the heads of my clients. My whole
outlook is to make someone feel good, to improve
their life, the way they live and the way they think.
At the very end of it all, we do it to make people
happy. Thats what design is.

EXQUISITE HANDMADE RUGS

Leon Norell is an importer of beautiful oriental carpets. Of special interest are his hard-to-find colours,
much in demand by interior designers for todays interiors, and his exquisite, surprisingly inexpensive silks
from India. Leon Norells father, the late Henry Norell, came to England in 1925, to become a prominent
broker among the community of carpet merchants trading at the famous Port of London Authority bonded
warehouses in the City. This was the carpet centre of the West to which foreign buyers would throng. It was
from there that in the 1940s Henry Norell had supplied Harrods, Liberty, John Lewis, Selfridges, Gamages,
Army & Navy and other West End department stores. It was at this centre that in the 1960s Leon Norell
came to be famed for providing the public with the facility to choose from the millions of pounds worth of
carpets stored there. Today, aside from the choice of traditional Oriental carpets, Leon produces carpets
for any design brief, delivered in under three months, as he did for the Presidents suit in 24: Live Another
Day. He is now also producing carpet replicas of the famous Conference of the Birds design, to any size
and made with imitation silk, these pieces make a beautiful statement in any interior.

ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES
In a rare opportunity Trgon take designers behind the scenes
to reveal the unique process they use to manufacture their
bespoke wood flooring. Trgon have established themselves as
one of the most exclusive manufactures of wood flooring in the
UK. This has been achieved in no small part by their ability to
offer an almost endless range of custom finishes. Each and
every board is hand finished in their London workshop by highly
skilled craftsman. Although their exact techniques are a closely
guarded secret they reveal that each board goes through no less
that sixteen separate stages before completion. This involves a
variety of techniques including varying degrees of sanding,
molding, undulating and staining. Trgons unique process
means that any type of colour, finish and design can be created
making them the choice for designers, architects and private
clients. www.turgon.co.uk

Edwardian Group London

EAST MEETS WEST END

THE EDWARDIAN GROUP AND NEW YORK/TORONTO BASED YABU PUSHELBERG
FUSE TOGETHER TO CREATE AN EAST COAST MEETS WEST END DESIGN TRIUMPH

EDWARDIAN GROUP LONDON RECENTLY

ANNOUNCED THE APPOINTMENT OF AWARDWINNING INTERNATIONAL DESIGN FIRM YABU
PUSHELBERG FOR ITS NEW HOTEL
DEVELOPMENT IN LONDON'S LEICESTER
SQUARE. NEW YORK AND TORONTO BASED YABU
PUSHELBERG WILL WORK WITH THE
HOSPITALITY GROUP TO DEVELOP A UNIQUE
LUXURY LIFESTYLE CONCEPT FOR THE
RECENTLY CONSENTED SCHEME IN THE HEART
OF LONDONS WEST END.

right path to respond to our customers and

appeal to a global audience.
What do Edwardian hotels represent
as a hotel group?
RS: As a family owned business we are extremely
proud of our fine portfolio of hotels but never give
up moving them forward and raising our
standards of service, customer experience and
design. In fact design, innovation and the arts for
that matter, are a pillar of what we are and what
our brand represents. The new hotel at Leicester
Square raises our game significantly we know
how important this site is not only to ourselves
but also to London as a city; and we have not
shrunk from this responsibility.

How do you envision this luxury lifestyle

concept being achieved?
RS: The key with the new Leicester Square hotel
is that it will be a place to have fun and relax; its
all about comfort and space, not indulgent
opulence. The hotel will feel more like a club for
our guests with the bedrooms taking on the feel
of a West End pied a terre. The inspiration for
the hotel came from the theatrical and cinematic
culture of Leicester Square: reflecting the idea
that the guest is the actor in their own play, the
hotel is their stage and London is the dynamic
background to each of their stories. Of course,
the new hotel will cater for every need whilst at
the same time remaining accessible to people in
an open and inviting way.

ROB STEUL, EDWARDIAN GROUP LONDON

What were the main strands of your

brief to the designers?
RS: Yabu Pushelberg have been involved in the
entire creation project surrounding the new hotel.
Together with them we are creating not only a
hotel, but a destination composed of restaurants,
bars, pool club and spa, meeting and function
spaces etc. The idea is that this property will
become a social gathering space in the heart of
the West End and attract guests from out of town
as well as plenty of local Londoners looking for a
great fun and relaxed place to call home in the
heart of theatreland, China Town and Soho.

What is next for the Edwardian Group?

RS: Edwardian Group London will continue to
raise the bar in our existing portfolio of hotels, in
particular we are in the midst of an exciting
programme to transform our public areas and
restaurant and bar offerings. Excitingly, we
recently launched the May Fair Kitchen, a new
restaurant concept prototyped in The May Fair
Hotel. The May Fair Kitchen is an elegant, yet
modern and relaxed place to dine, offering the
finest quality food in a high quality environment in
the heart of Mayfair. We are now looking at more
plans for development of F&B spaces across our

How and why did you choose to work with

Yabu Pushelberg?
RS: I have worked with them on other projects
including 10 Trinity Square in London. Yabu
Pushelberg are much more than interior
designers. They have a great understanding of
brand and guest experience from conception
through to creation. I think also that they see the
totality of design, from the external through the
smallest detail of the interior. It is this rigour and
attention to detail, which will set our hotel in the

London properties as well as creating outdoor
terraces and upgraded bars and restaurants in
our Guildford and Manchester properties.

GLENN PUSHELBERG AND GEORGE YABU,

YABU PUSHELBERG
When you first read the brief for the design
project, what were your initial thoughts, how did
you envision the hotel?
GP: One of the most interesting things about this
project for us was that the conceptual program
was not yet formed. We were brought in not only
to design the hotel, but help figure out the point
of difference for this new lifestyle hotel brand. Its
really exciting to be part of the invention of
something.
GY: Our first instinct was to understand the
historical context and the sense of place intrinsic
to the Hotels location. Not necessarily as point of
reference in our design concept, but to have a
sense of the contextual background, was to us
important, in order to approach invention or
reinvention in a city like London that has so much
history.
Have you ever worked for a hotel group like the
Edwardian Group?
GP: The uniqueness of the Edwardian Group lies
in that it is a family run business. Its a small
enough organisation that we are reacting directly
with the founders and owners, which makes the
rapport that much more robust and gratifying.
GY: Its an enjoyable, lovely relationship.
What were your first design considerations for
this project?
GP: In most hotels, public spaces are layered
horizontally at the base of the hotel, whereas in
this case, the public spaces are vertically stacked
through the centre of the hotel presenting really
interesting opportunities for vertical circulation.
GY: Part of the brief we were presented with was
to animate the street while being mindful of the
community rules in Leicester Square. Were
excited about the potential to create a food
program at street level that will become a social
gathering place, perhaps with food carts and
trucks parked in loading docksspaces that are
typically un-designed and hidden away.

producers for our clients hotel projects;

managing or directing other consultants, such as
branding, art consultants, lighting designers,
landscape designers, etc, and assisting clients
with a more comprehensive vision.
What is next for Yabu Pushelberg after this
project?
GY: This project will undoubtedly be years in
development, as is the case with any large scale

hotel project, but in the nearer future, we are

excited about the launch of the Park Hyatt New
York this fall, and a number of super high end
residential developments in Shanghai and Hong
Kong launching in the new year.
GP: We are looking forward to being producers
of more and more projects, and to collaborations
like this one that offer the chance to create
something with our clients from scratch.

How will you maintain the Edwardian Group

brand in the design?
GP: With this project the Edwardian Group is
essentially embarking on a different phase of
growth for the company through the creation of
an entirely new lifestyle brand. We are looking
forward to being part of that creation through this
hotel. Its going to be a standout.
What is Yabu Pushelbergs ambition with this
project?
GP: When we achieve what we are setting out to,
this project will allow our firm to showcase our
work in London, and to the world at large.
We are most well known as an interiors firm, but
we are also designing products, and acting as

In the kitchen I think that

a hot tap is a must-have
appliance. Gone are the
days of waiting for the
kettle to boil, now that we
can have near boiling hot
water on tap for cups of
tea and cooking. Doing
away with a kettle means
that the kitchen can have
a more streamlined look
too. Another appliance,
which has had an impact
on kitchen design is the
down-draught extractor.
Built into the worktop
behind the hob, it appears
at the touch of a button
when required, but
disappears when not in
use.

The Quooker Fusion!

Offering both filtered cold
and boiling water on
demand. Its an
environmentally friendly
option, only boiling and
filtering the water you
need, not surplus, as a
kettle would. Both the
boiling and filtered water
is instantly delivered, and
there is a safety feature,
making it a safe appliance
around children.

I strongly recommend an
integrated cooking area
with hidden appliances
such as remote control
exhaust system, hidden
disposal system, level
electric cooking area,
dishwasher and built in
refrigerator. These
appliances, especially in
the kitchen, revolutionize
not only the kitchen's
functionality but also the
total look of the livable
area.

We are specifying wine

fridges more and more
often as a standard
appliance in new
developments. It is a
really great addition, and
one that certainly brings
a luxury feel to any
kitchen. Either a slim-line
version that can tuck into
a handy space or a fullon, full height wine fridge
for the keener wine
collector!

JADORE ADORA
The Adora SL WP dishwasher was one of five V-ZUG products recently
awarded by the Plus X Award 2014. This powerful and groundbreaking
dishwasher really impressed the judges noting it for its innovation, high
quality, functionality, ease of use and ecology. The Adora SL WP
dishwasher also consumes just seven litres of water compared to hand
washing, which can use around 40 litres. A partial load programme
ensures that the machine is efficient even during smaller loads, reducing
the usage to 1-6 litres. It is able to be so efficient in part due to the clever
QuadSensor technology. The flexible and greater internal space of the
dishwasher allows it to be used economically and for different purposes to
suit the exact needs of the user. The dishwasher also has many other
popular features such as the 17-minute Sprint programme. Its ideal for
quickly washing items such as during a family party when you may need to
reuse items. The V-ZUG Adora SL WP dishwasher retails from 2,370

IDEAS ARE BREWING

Proclaimed by bloggers as the coolest office in the world, Mintels
London headquarters brings together an eclectic mix of Doctor Who
themes, festival vibes and very clever workspace design, and it is now
home to the revolutionary TopBrewer coffee machine. The TopBrewer by
Scanomat is quickly becoming the coffee machine of choice for the
modern workspace with its sleek design, advanced app-based
technology and not to mention the great coffee, which is incidentally
roasted by Scanomat in their very own micro-roastery. Simon Bracken,
Managing Director of Scanomat UK, originally met Peter Haigh, Mintels
CEO, as part of a series of events arranged by the Advanced Workplace
Association. He said: I visited Mintels HQ as part of AWAs Workplace
Week programme. Peter [Haigh] kindly took us on a guided tour of his
offices and I was extremely impressed with the well thought out and
original design of the space. It was very encouraging, during Workplace
Week, when the subject of coffee kept coming up in the discussion. At
Scanomat we believe good coffee and design can bring people together
in the workspace, improve staff morale and subsequently increase
productivity and opportunities for collaboration. The TopBrewer is the
first professional coffee machine that truly embraces design and
compliments agile working principles. www.scanomat.co.uk

WELL RESTED DESIGN

IRINA TOWNSEND, KEIR TOWNSEND, TAKES A PEEK INSIDE THE TREND-DRIVEN WORLD OF
BEDROOM DESIGN TO DISCOVER WHAT CLIENTS WISH FOR IN THIS PRIVATE AND PERSONAL INTERIOR SPACE

IN RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS BEDROOMS ARE THE

MOST INDIVIDUAL SPACES AND ARE ALWAYS
INFLUENCED BY CLIENTS PERSONAL TASTES
AND PREFERENCES. THIS SPECIFICALLY
RELATES TO COLOUR SCHEMES AND
FURNITURE STYLES.
On the practical side, the starting point is always to
find the right mattress. I always ask my clients to
select the best mattresses that they can afford, as
this is the factor that determines whether the
bedroom would ever feel comfortable or not. It is
also the factor that influences the size of the bed,
including its height the factors that have an affect
on the design of the headboard, as well as storage
solutions and circulation around the room.
Most of our clients ask us to create tranquil, almost
sanctuary spaces, where they want to escape from
their busy lives. Having said that, most of our
clients prefer to have TVs in their bedrooms, which
we find various solutions for, such as mirror TVs for
instance.
We always try to preserve original period features
wherever possible in old buildings, such as coving
or fireplaces, which are important elements of the
original character and history of the environment.
The geometry of the building can have an influence
on furniture styles and arrangements. For example,
58

Interior Design Today November 2014

we are working on a circular bedroom at the

moment and where cylindrical bedside tables and
lamps subtly emphasise the interesting geometry
of the space.
Interestingly enough, it is always children who want
their bedrooms to feel like pure fantasy, which is
almost always in contrast with their parents
bedrooms. Children are very comfortable with
bright colours and striking features and patterns,
and we have done a few fun projects, like the nineyear old girls room in this particular project. She
wanted deep pinks, reds, oranges and purples all
in the same scheme. I told her that it was a bit too
much for one bedroom, but she showed me her
favorite polka-dotted dress that had all of these
colours in the same pattern and said Look, it
does work! and she was right.
I think a bedroom should always feel like a place
with a timeless design, which doesnt create the
anxiety of following particular trends. It is about the
person living in it. In general though, neutral
schemes are particularly good for creating different
accents and adding splashes of colour with bed
linen and accessories.
One thing that Keir Townsend is an advocate of is
custom-made pieces for our clients. In this
instance we would always make custom-made
beds for our projects, as it allows our clients to

select the swatches that they find most pleasing

and create personalised storage solutions.
We very much have to rely on our clients taste
when it comes to colour, as bedrooms are the most
individual of spaces. We have done bedrooms that
range from pure white palettes to deep red. If these
clients had to swap their bedrooms, they would
most probably find each others colour schemes
completely wrong, but their spaces work for them.
Textures are extremely important, especially when
creating a neutral scheme, as it should not feel dull
or monotonous. Tactile qualities of natural
materials and fabrics can have a calming effect on
the environment and soften the scheme, as well as
add points of interest. There should also be
ambient, focused and feature lighting for relaxing,
reading or even enjoying a cup of tea in bed.

A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP

Recent research shows that bedroom design is about to
embrace the wave of new automated technology. Detectors
keeping a quiet night time vigil over health and wellbeing that
are attuned to the person sleeping in the bed are just one of
these concepts to be introduced to the bedroom. Tablet
controlled blinds and curtains, as well as zoned lighting in
the bedroom are all welcome changes. Regardless of the
design style, clients today expect a greater degree of comfort
and control in the bedroom. Interior designers can now
accept briefs based on many new expectations utilising some
of the ideas that are now available, including technological
advancements. Deanswood Interiors have been making
curtains and manufacturing blinds for many years and they
are proud of their history in keeping abreast of new innovative
design changes. Whether a traditional, contemporary or
ultra-modern bedroom Deanswood do have the experience
and knowhow to accommodate and assist the designer that
is their way. 01634 814444 | www.deanswood.co.uk

Design edit

Design edit.
This editions design edit falls in line with our bedrooms feature. Thats why when I caught drift of ercols latest range of
beds I couldnt resist featuring them as our edit pieces. Ercol is synonymous with great design. Founded in 1920 by young
Italian designer, Lucian Ercolani OBE, the brands design is recognised globally and these bed frames are no exception to its
outstanding design rule.

BRONTE .
The new Bronte Collection epitomises ercols commitment to
design integrity and quality. This bedroom furniture is crafted
from soft toned ash wood and completed with an attractive
tinted matt lacquer finish, allowing the natural beauty of wood
to shine through. The resulting pieces have clean-lines and a
versatility to suit any room. The cabinets are traditionally
constructed, with dovetail joints and deep drawers, and a
choice of kingsize or double beds. As well as the two beds,
the range includes a storage bench, a bedside cabinet, a four
drawer wide chest, a six drawer tall chest, a seven drawer
chest, a two and three door wardrobe, and a storage bench.
v Bronte Bed, Double Bed is priced at 745.

TERAMO
Made of pale oak, this range reflects ercols heritage of
Windsor chairs with the distinctive spindle headboard made
of carefully turned wood. This classic bed comes as a double
and kingsize with matching bedside cabinets, a two door and
three door wardrobe and three sizes of chest of drawers (six
drawer tall chest, five drawer wide chest and seven drawer
tall wide chest).
v Teramo Bed, Double Bed is priced at 795.

PINTO .
Pinto comes in a contemporary painted pebble finish with an
informal feel and plentiful storage. The oak tops of the bedside
cabinet, and the chests of drawers (six drawer wide chest, seven
drawer wide chest and five drawer tall chest) are finished in a
clear lacquer allowing the texture of the woods grain to show
through. Pinto bedroom is made from a combination of the
cabinets being painted elm with oak tops. A matching storage
bench provides extra storage at the end of the bed.

AND RELAX
DUNCAN KETLEY, DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT, VISPRING,
TALKS TO JADE TILLEY ABOUT WELLNESS AND THE
COMPANYS DARWINIAN APPROACH TO DEVELOPMENT
JT: WHERE DID VISPRING BEGIN?
DK: In 1901, in our London factory, we invented the pocket sprung mattress. We now manufacture out of Devon,
but our craftsmen still use many of the same artisan skills they did back then to hand-make our beds.
JT: YOU HAVE A DEEP-ROOTED BRAND HERITAGE,
HOW DO YOU CONTINUE TO INNOVATE?
Firstly, our entry into new global markets over the last few years has
DK: There are three key drivers.
encouraged us to emphasise different elements of the product. For some, style and proportion matters most; for
others its the natural fillings that we use, but for all comfort is paramount. Interestingly, different markets have
their own view of comfort. In the Far East, for example, firmer beds are preferred. These market peculiarities
Secondly, a keen sense of

what our competitors are achieving means that we can never afford to rest on our laurels. The bed market is
much more competitive than it was 10 years ago and we aim to retain our position as the luxury bed brand, not

just in the UK but globally.
repeat. We analyse what sells; keep the models that do, and retire the ones that dont. This ensures our product
range is fresh without becoming too bloated.

JT: HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT YOU ARE ALWAYS ON TOP OF THE SCIENCE AND WELLBEING DESIGN
AGENDA?
DK: We make our own springs using the finest-grade Vanadium steel, which retains its strength and suppleness
for much longer than carbon steel thereby bringing a genuine longevity to our beds. Each spring is laid in our
signature honeycomb nesting which ensures that they work independently from one another. This means the
body is completely supported throughout the night.
Just as importantly we scour the globe to find the best natural fibers to make our beds. From the UK, we use
more Platinum Certified pure British fleece wool than any other bed maker and have exclusive use of real
Shetland wool. Looking further afield, we work with some of the worlds most celebrated and conscientious
farmers and producers to source fibers such as silk, mohair, vicua, bamboo and cashmere. We also work with
Independent sleep expert, Dr Neil Stanley. This relationship keeps us up to date with current thinking and
relevant sleep-science; he is a great advocate of using natural fibres to encourage and enhance sleep,
something we also firmly believe in.

JT: WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR VISPRING

IN THIS SECTOR OF THE INDUSTRY?
DK: Growth. Not because we arent - far from it. More, because, as an international brand based in the UK, we
need to think globally and relate every business decision we make to our export markets. This growth needs to
be intelligent, controlled and commercial to ensure we take advantage of a common product development
philosophy, whilst allowing the different geographies the ability to express themselves through things like fabric
choice.
JT: WHAT DOES VISPRING ASPIRE TO LOOK LIKE
IN 10, EVEN 20 YEARS TIME?
DK: We aspire to be bigger and better in everyway. We are actively seeking ways to push ourselves further so we
can deliver more, whilst remembering what makes us great both as a company and as product that really
makes a difference to peoples lives.
JT: WHAT IS THE BEST DESIGN ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE TO DESIGNERS?
DK: For me designers have a critical role to play, specifically within Vispring but also generally within the
industry. Ive been fortunate to work with established designers like Terence Mesguich Jacquemin, Monica
Frster and Dirk Debbaut. They each have a unique way of seeing the way that design contributes to the final
product its wonderful to watch and be part of that process. My advice would be lots of discussion and planning
in the run up to a project make sure everybody is crystal clear about expectations and what the end game is.
JT: WHATS YOUR NEXT BIG DESIGN UP YOUR SLEEVES?
DK: We are currently working with Terence Mesguich Jacquemin to bring a completely new range of divan feet to
the market. While details in one way, these products are so important because they have the ability to
completely change the way that the final product looks.

SET TO SNOOZE
Since 1947 Jensen has produced beds in Norway with a strong
focus on sleep comfort. Many groundbreaking innovations in bed
manufacturing bear the Jensen signature and today this is more
evident than ever before. Combining the significance of traditional
craftsmanship with the best materials and solutions that the
market has to offer is a well-known fact in the business. In 1998,
a revolution in sleep comfort began. The Jensen Original Zone
system attracted considerable interest from both consumers and
retailers, so much so that one year after its introduction, all
Jensen beds featured the Zone System. Since the launch the zone
system has been synonymous with the Jensen trademark.
Jensen Original Zone System provides proper support for the
entire body when at rest. It provides support for the curve of the
back, in combination with a soft shoulder zone, which is the key to
an optimal sleep experience. The zone system is based on selfevident and natural principles; that is, most people are broader in
the hip and shoulder areas and narrower and heavier around the
waist. 01823 444300 | www.jensenbeds.co.uk

KITCHEN INTUITION
JOHNNY GREY, PRINCIPAL JOHNNY GREY STUDIOS AND VISITING PROFESSOR OF DESIGN AT
BUCKS NEW UNIVERSITY, MUSES OVER THE KEY DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF A KITCHEN DESIGNER

KITCHEN AND FURNITURE DESIGNERS ARE

COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ANIMALS MOST OF
THE TIME, WITH ONE OR TWO EXCEPTIONS. THIS
IS A PROBLEM THE KITCHEN DESIGN COURSE AT
BUCKS NEW UNIVERSITY IS BEING SET UP TO
ADDRESS.
The thing is, most kitchen designers are rarely
designers at all. They are salespeople peddling
pre-made products and arranging it around a
room. No amount of use of the word 'bespoke' can
change this fact. My colleagues in the industry hate
me saying this: sorry.
Apart from that, a big obvious difference between
the output of a kitchen v. furniture designer is price.
For clients on a tight budget, pre-manufactured
products make sense. For others there are
problems. Scale is one. If, as increasingly, people
opt for a generous-sized kitchen, units look
inappropriate, wrong, with high ceilings. The way
they fill corners is also undesirable, as corners are
difficult to work in and awkward as storage space.
Kitchen furniture designed individually and
specifically can easily be freestanding, allowing a
sense of spaciousness and free circulation. A
walk-in pantry is an inexpensive food storage
solution that can divert resources to a proper
central island, a truly bespoke centre of the
66

Interior Design Today November 2014

working kitchen. Predesigned kitchens rarely

include pantries, let alone multi-function islands.
Furniture rather than units creates an inviting place
to go and be. In order to make a scheme work, the
designer plans the space around its functions using
intelligent ergonomics. Real design can even make
the culinary zone of a kitchen more compact,
freeing space in the room for other activities like
socialising or homework.
Furniture is full of cultural meaning and tradition,
handmade wooden items, for example, paying
more than lip service to the past and indeed the
present. Wood, marble, steel and concrete all have
their own vocabulary of form.
Kitchen companies tend to avoid proposing even
very necessary building work to change interior
architecture because this complicates the selling
mission and/or absorbs the budget. Furniture
designers on the other hand think how all
components of the space relate to each other. They
will work towards an optimal result even if it means
opening up the space to the garden, French
windows replacing a potential run of units.
So the difference between a kitchen designer and a
furniture designer is a profound one. There is a role
for mechanically reproduced items for the home,
but the other side of the coin is growing interest in
individually crafted pieces that express clients'

individuality and become heirlooms. These can be

any style, from baroque, quirky and experimental,
through recycled, to classic understated taste or
minimalism. Budget aside, there are few limits to
the kitchen made with furniture.

SHOWROOM

SHOWCASE
INTERIOR DESIGN TODAY IS TAKING A LOOK THROUGH THE DOORS OF SOME OF THE UKS
BEST SHOWROOMS, OFFERING AN INSIGHT INTO THE COLLECTIONS CURATED AND
CREATED BY THE DESIGNERS WHO RUN THEM. by Jade Tilley

Just a short walk from Gloucester Road tube

station, where the road meets Old Brompton, I
found myself on a gloriously sunny day in
London, walking towards the Keir Townsend
showroom for my latest showroom visit. Keir
Townsend had been on my radar for a while and
I was encouraged to go along and take a look at
the shop first hand.

On my approach I was disturbed from my reverie

by the high-octane sounds of a Ferrari, roaring to
life, along with several other of the brands
luxury sports vehicles, gliding across the road in
a careful and yet exhilarating majesty. Keir
Townsend sits, poised on the corner opposite the
Ferarri showroom, a bright, glossy shop window
to the car of many a dreamers dream. Keir
Townsend in contrast, exudes a serenity and

luxury, and so it is no wonder that the showroom

has the occasional visit from certain celebrities,
hopping over the road from cars to interiors.
Irina Townsend, the Co-founder of Keir
Townsend, is there to greet me. Warm and
inviting Irina greets me with the charm and grace
that makes it easy to see why so many of her
clients come to her and never leave. Irina is
accommodating and enthusiastic about the

Keir Townsend

journey of the brand and the place they currently

stand in the interiors industry.
Irina, along with her husband Alistair Keir, a
chartered surveyor, are business partners. They
launched the practice in the middle of the
recession in 2010. Irina said at the time, We had
separately worked for commercial design
firmsbut we were doing projects for friends and
had developed a strong residential sideline. The
company now has a six strong team, which is run
from the studio beneath the showroom. I will get
to that part later.
The first thing that hits you as you enter the
showroom space is the intoxicating smell. Irina
has worked with her few carefully selected scent
specialists to create a heady mix of unusual and
tempting smells that sit harmoniously with the
pieces featured within the showroom. CULTI
room diffusers sit along the side tables and
cabinets, emitting a glorious scent that goes
hand in hand with the style of the space. I cant
quite say why, but it just all works together in
serene harmony and sets the dark natural
materials off to a tee.
Bringing myself back to the room, Irina is keen
to talk about everything that this showroom has
to offer. One thing that is certain is that Irina has
72

Interior Design Today November 2014

had more than a hand in every single item that

the showroom has to offer. She refers to her
many collaborators as artisans of their craft,
conjured from around the world literally. On the
back wall there are beautiful circular wall art, an
unusual technique, which I discover is crafted
using the simple material of plaster, decorated in
sumptuous blues and mixed with earthy tones.
An Italian designer was commissioned for these
particular items. Keir Townsend in many ways
seems very connected to its earth. The colours
and the textures all trace back to nature and
Irina enthuses over the ways in which they have
used and reused to preserve and recreate for a
new generation. The recycled glass surfaces are
just one example. They look like marble,
particularly the white surface. It glistens and
shimmers with a very natural quality. When you
get up close you can see the detail of the shards,
making it even more beautiful. There is also a
three-dimensional quality to the material that
only such crafting and recycling could achieve
with such elegance.
The connection to earth and nature continues
throughout, whether it is the table tops,
reminiscent of fossils found deep in the earth or
the smooth and seductive marble pebble

sculptures that act as low level tables and

seating. When I say marble I am in fact
surprised and delighted to see Irina gracefully lift
one of the pebbles with little effort. It is again, an
illusion, but no less of the quality and skill of
creating a solid marble seat has gone into it.
These concepts and designs have all been so
carefully considered and thought through and it
is a testament to Irinas knowledge and skill that
they have all worked so flawlessly.
Other items that caught my eye included the
lighting installations in the centre of the room,
dangling above the large central table. When I
asked who made those I discovered that the
actually glass pendants were originally alone, it
was Irina and her team who added the curtain
tassels to transform them into something new,
something altogether more exotic.
Continuing my search for lighting pieces, I
focused in on the ornate lamps that sat atop the
white recycled glass surface. Like a picture taken
in an art deco era, these angelic emitters of light
consisted of crisp white cut glass in various
angles and facets. It reconfirms how well the
retail showroom flows from earthy and textured
to sleek and composed and back again. As Irina
talks me through the various collaborations from

Showroom showcase

Spain, Italy and further afield, we stop by a

copper clad cabinet. It is in fact wood on the
inside the but face of the piece is clad in a
stunning myriad of copper panels, all reflecting
different tones. It is clever, contained design
that plays with the senses and exudes luxury in
an understated fashion.
Once I have absorbed as much product
information as I can, we begin talking about
the company as a studio and business. It
transpires that the offices were originally
situated across the road, above said Ferarri
showroom, but the growth of the company and
Irinas desire to expand and create in a larger
workshop meant that when this corner spot
came available, they had to take it up. The
transformation is stunning. The retail
showroom serves as a window in the Keir
Townsend world. Below deck is a spotlessly
appointed studio and workshop, with a
cavernous archive of fabrics, materials,
samples and paints that would simply have
never fit into the previous space.
I was lucky enough to get a mini tour of the
space, where I met Alistair and some of the
other designers, all busily working on their
next projects, which I discover, there are many
of and in various corners of the world. There
are residential projects, hotel/restaurant
clients (we cant talk too much about those)

and pieces being created for the showroom

upstairs. Irina shows me the workshop, which
carries another heady scent, this time of paint
(you can literally smell the artisans at work) we
dont stay in there too long but just long
enough to take a glimpse at the archive of
materials and projects and for Irina to present
me with one of the signature fragrances they
use. CULTI dcor, FICHINDIA spray ambiente
room spray, a limited edition that has sadly
been discontinued. I shall treasure it and
fragrance my home in the hope that it
transforms itself into a Keir Townsend
masterpiece.
Irina, Alistair and the team at Keir Townsend
are making strides in the industry and it is easy
to see why. The level of craftsmanship and the
dedication to working with artisans from
around the globe positions them as innovators
and creative thinkers and Irinas passion and
understanding of what her clients look for in
the company is unfaltering. I can only
recommend that everyone takes a trip down
Old Brompton to see for themselves.

My Icon

MY ICON
CHRISTOPHER JENNER, JENNER STUDIO,
REVEALS HIS DESIGN ICON
Since 2010 Christopher has become renowned for his work with luxury
brands looking to define themselves in the global marketplace.
Christopher Jenner creates considered designs to meet his clients
strategic objectives. His aptitude for storytelling and knowledge of
artisanal skills allow him to capture the essence of a brand. Evident in
the studios global portfolio of projects is the importance of
ethnography and identity. In 2012 Christopher presented his first
acclaimed installation The Looking Glass House and the toy-like
collection Swell at the Salone del Mobile, Milano. The same year he
was awarded British Breakthrough Talent for 2012 by FX magazine,
and in 2013 was appointed Creative Director for the Eurostar. In 2014
Christopher presented The Cloud at the Salone del Mobile, which
was recognised as a highlight of the programme.
WHO IS YOUR DESIGN ICON?
Josiah Wedgwood
WHAT IS HE MOST FAMOUS FOR?
Josiah Wedgwood is most famous for his step changing experimental work in ceramics.
Due to a childhood illness (small pox) he was unable to follow the traditional route of the
potter to the wheel, forcing him concentrate his efforts in the design and innovation of
this most traditional craft; a classic case of facing adversity from a creative perspective.
With his business partner he is credited with developing the first true pottery factory in
England and the birth of the Golden Age of English ceramics.
HOW WAS WEDGWOODS WORK RECEIVED DURING
THE PERIOD IN WHICH THEY WERE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL?
The success of the Wedgwood potteries occurred alongside the advent of the Industrial
revolution, this time of innovation and change was directly reflected in the quality and
nature of their wares. New techniques and methods ensured products were well ahead
of their time and truly transformative. Typically of the time, the patronage of Royalty
ensured success and fame. The naming of Queens Ware with the favour of Queen
Charlotte, and orders from European Royalty catapulted Josiah into the history books and is
seen as the most famous potter of all time. The Wedgwood Portland Vase is the
culmination of this search for perfection through innovation.
WHY HAVE YOU CHOSEN JOSIAH WEDGWOOD AS YOUR ICON?
Josiah Wedgwood was more than a craftsman; he was a brand builder with an obsessive
attention to detail and a profound perspective on life. What attracts me most to his work is its
simple beauty, a beauty born out of the desire to innovate, a passion to push the boundaries of
crafted possibility.
WHICH PROJECTS FROM YOUR OWN PORTFOLIO
DEMONSTRATES A NOD TO THE WORK OF WEDGWOOD?
I feel the layering of materials and textures are an obvious nod to the characteristics of Wedgwood. A
confident use of colour and texture create innovative material expressions. Josiah Wedgwood was a
formidable brand builder; much of our commercial work is centred on expressing our clients, capturing their
values through both products and spaces.
IF YOU COULD BE REMEMBERED FOR ONE ELEMENT OF YOUR DESIGN,
WHAT WOULD YOU HOPE IT WOULD BE?
Making a difference to the way our clients represent themselves, and changing the way people feel,
if only for a moment.

ORIGINAL
TECHNIQUES, TODAY
First established in Castle Cary in 1837 by John Boyd, the company
continues the tradition of horsehair weaving using the original
looms and techniques. Horsehair fabrics are used mainly for
upholstery of both classical and modern upholstery. Originally used
by Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Sir Edwin Lutyens and Charles
Rennie Mackintosh, as well as for Biedermeier and Empire style
furniture, this traditional English fabric has inspired architects and
designers all around the world, such as Alvar Aalto, Josef Frank
and Saarinen. Horsehair fabrics are highly regarded for their
quality, durability and lustre which is unequalled by any other
natural fabric, as well as their inherent fire resistant properties. The

INTUITIVE DESIGN
KIVO, designed exclusively for Herman Miller by Alexander Lorenz,
takes on the challenges faced by the ever-changing landscape of the
modern office. KIVO was created to provide a solution to the dynamic
workplace whilst also offering flexibility for change in both work
activity and behaviour. A rise in open plan floorplates and a decrease
in private office spaces calls for a balance to be struck between
individual and group needs. Herman Miller developed and validated a
concise range of KIVO settings to meet these needs in combination
with a variety of products from its portfolio. The lightweight triangular
modules that form Alexander Lorenzs innovative new system divides
existing areas, creating and emphasising places to work. It supports
the intuitive nature in which people work, outlining spaces where
people can be creative or find a quiet space to escape and think. The
design creates a powerful statement and comes in a variety of finishes
from bold colours to lighter hues. KIVOs uneven external profile
combined with acoustic dampening materials built on a resilient steel
skeleton reflects and reduces sound, creating a private hub.

A WAVE OF INNOVATION
British Smart Home technology developer LightwaveRF has
introduced a new handheld remote, which allows users to lock
linked LightwaveRF sockets, dimmers and plug-ins at the touch of
a button to prevent them from being turned on or off manually.
Called the Lightwave Locker, the compact handheld zapper can
also be used to isolate these devices from the rest of the system to
prevent control from any other hand held remote or Smartphone
within range. The company has said that this new facility will
improve home safety concerns, particularly the possibility of
access by small children. A major feature of the LightwaveRF
Connect Series is that all these beautifully designed products use
wireless RF signals for switching and control, are fully compatible
with each other, and can be retro-fitted at any time. Any system
can therefore be completely modular, allowing home owners to
add as much or as little as they feel appropriate. Systems can be
built up starting with just one socket or dimmer in one room,
adding more elements over time to create an entire Smart Home.

A CANVAS OF IMAGINATION
LYDIA SWINTON, CO-DIRECTOR OF FAWN ART CONSULTANCY EXPLAINS WHY USING
AN ART CONSULTANT COULDNT BE EASIER AND WHAT THE SERVICE ENTAILS

WHEN THE FAWN ART CONSULTANCY TEAM

ARE NOT VISITING CLIENTS ON SITE, YOULL
FIND US SCOURING ARTISTS STUDIOS WHERE
WE HAND-PICK ARTWORK FOR A VARIETY OF
CLIENTS.
Our business was formed over three and a half
years ago. My business partner Maddi and I felt
that there was a need for a tailored art
consultancy service. We recognised clients
desire for a greater range in artwork options and
found they often struggled to visualise how a
piece of art would look in their home when
viewing it in a gallery environment. Is it going to
be in keeping with my interior? Can you hang a
piece like that above a radiator? Im not sure it
will fit? These questions were regularly heard.
Our ethos from the start has been about making
the process of buying artwork more accessible to
a wider audience whilst at the same time
contributing to artist growth. Seeing an artists
career flourish, knowing that we have helped

along the way is hugely rewarding, as is going

from start to finish with a project and feeling the
satisfaction of seeing the final installation. We
work with both emerging and established artists,
so our service appeals to a range of budgets. We
have an unrivalled portfolio of artwork to choose
from, which has been particularly helpful to busy
interior designers like Camilla Thorp, of Thorp
Design, who recently said: Fawn have responded
fantastically to our briefs and worked within
budgets and time constraints perfectly. They have
a very wide-ranging network of artists, meaning
that they can find unusual pieces to suit any
project.
The process of working with us is simple; ideally
we like to visit the client on site to discuss their
requirements. Interior designers provide samples
and technical drawings from which we work to
compile a tailored proposal based on their clients
needs. We then liaise with the artists, formulate
inspiring bios, create scale drawings and source
high-resolution images, making it easy for clients

to clearly visualise our ideas. Depending on the

scale of the project, this process usually takes
two weeks. Our team can also arrange viewings
and delivery of artwork and offer framing and
installation as part of our service.
We pride ourselves on the quality of the artwork
we have on our database as well as the
relationships we have formed with our artists. We
continually expand on our art options to keep with
current trends and because of this our service
has helped award-wining interior designers
source artwork for private homes, offices,
healthcare environments and top universities to
mention a few. Art schemes are an integral part
of building design and decoration, and by using
an art consultant you have the benefit of their
trained eye in selecting art of the highest quality
and installing the artwork to create maximum
impact, all within your budget. This can all be
achieved within weeks with the benefits lasting
for years.
