Grading and Logisticsi

This document summarizes the grading and logistics for the Understanding Video Games MOOC. There are several ways for learners to take the course: for free with a statement of accomplishment, through Signature Track for a verified certificate, or taking proctored exams for potential university credit. Learners taking the course for free or through Signature Track will be evaluated based on quizzes, while those paying for exams will be tested more rigorously with midterm and final exams graded by the University of Alberta. The exams are intended to provide the same experience as university students receive.

Understanding Video Games Grading Policy:

For learners who are taking the course for free or on Signature Track, you will receive either a Statement of Accomplishment or Verified Certificate if you complete
the course. In this course, you will be evaluated based on 10 end of chapter quizzes, each worth 5 points. Thus, there are a total of 50 points for the course. To
earn a Statement of Accomplishment or Verified Certificate, you must earn 80% of the total course points, or 40 points.
Each end of chapter quiz can be attempted 2 times.
For learners who pay to take the proctored exams, the midterm and final exams are equally weighted at 50% each for Understanding Video Games. Both exams
will be multiple choice. Students will be tested on all material presented in the course, with particular attention to the videos, readings, lesson resources, and
quizzes. Material discussed in the forums will also be eligible, but will only be drawn from extended discussions that involved the participation of the instructor
and/or staff. The mid-term exam will cover everything from Lessons 1 to 7. The final exam will consist of 33% of all material from Lessons 1 to 7 and 66% of all
material from Lessons 8 to 11.
Grades will be assigned from the exam marks by taking the absolute score, converting it to a percentile ranking, and then ranking all students.
An overall course mark of 50% or more guarantees a passing grade of at least D, whereas an overall course mark of 90% or more guarantees a grade of at
least A+.
It is not based on a curve or historic distribution of student grades.
University of Alberta is only providing grades sanctioned by the university for learners who pay to take the proctored exams. These exams are rigorous, universitylevel tests and are the same exams University of Alberta students will be required to take. This is a new level of testing for a Coursera course.
While the midterm and final exams are not available if the learner does not pay to take the exams, we will be posting a link to the actual exam tool built by
University of Alberta researchers in educational assessment technology. In the open testing tool, we will provide a number of sample exam questions. These are
actual questions from our databank of exam questions, but will not appear on either the midterm or final exam. We hope this will help prepare learners who are
paying for the exams to become familiar with the interface of the exam testing tool and allow learners who are not sure if they want to take the exams a chance to
try the experience first. Those learners who pay to take the exams will do so via the remote proctoring service of ProctorU. University of Alberta students will be
taking the exams via locked-down browsers in computer labs on campus.

Quiz Attempts and Signature Track:

Although weve already released all 10 quizzes for Understanding Video Games, there is one important consideration for those of you wishing to earn a Verified
Certificate by joining Signature Track.

You should not use your two attempts for more than 3 of the 10 total quizzes before joining!
The reason for this is that you will need to submit a quiz with identity authentication for at least 7 out of the 10 quizzes in order to be eligible a Verified Certificate.
Hence, if you use both attempts for all 10 quizzes and then join Signature Track you wont have any attempts left to resubmit with identity authentication.
You can join Signature Track anytime between now and September 23rd. Remember to leave yourself attempts for out of 10 quizzes before joining.
If you do not wish to earn a Verified Certificate then none of the above applies to you.
