TITLE : WORK INSTRUCTION FOR

PICKLING & PASSIVATION OF
STAINLESS STEEL EQUIPMENTS
Doc. No. AIM/PPS / 01
1.0 SCOPE :

PAGE NO. 1 OF 2

This work instruction defines the method of carrying out the pickling & passivation of
stainless steel equipments.
2.0 OBJECTIVE :
For acid cleaning & neutralizing SS material/weld joints meant during fabrication of
vessels. This covers the surface treatment of austenitic stainless steel. The basic purpose
of this chemical treatment is to remove films of oxide, scale, tampering colures &
remnants of welding slag which are formed during annealing of welding.
3.0 REFERENCE :
ASTM A380
4.0 WORK INSTRUCTION :
4.1 Pre-treatment : Surface should be cleaned with brushing or grinding to remove weld
spatter & smooth out scratches & should be degreased to remove oil & grease films.

4.2 PICKLING
4.2.1 K2 a pickling and passivation products (in Paste / spray / liquid form) approved
under ASTM A380 for pickling and passivation of Stainless Steels shall be used for this
purpose.
4.2.2 The surface to be pickled and passivated shall be cleaned thoroughly and made free
from grease and oils.
4.2.3 K2 pickling paste is to be applied on the weld seam and the surrounding area with a
brush. If the surface area to be cleaned is large then K2 pickling spray is to be sprayed on
the surface to be cleaned with a spray pump or a pressurized plastic spray bottle.
4.2.4 After applying K2 (paste / spray) leave it on the surface to be cleaned for approx.30

Solution:
a) Nitric Acid (HNO3)
- 20 parts by volume
b) Hydro fluoric Acid (HF) 3 parts by volume
c) Water
- 77 parts by volume.
4.3 Passivation
4.1.1 Apply K2 Passivation solution on the entire area and leave it for approx. 30 mins.
4.1.2 As an alternative to points no.4.1.1, following passivation solution can use
a) Nitric Acid (HNO3)
- 20 parts by volume
b) Water
- 80 parts by volume.
4.1.3 Finally rinse the surface thoroughly with water.
5.0 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS:
5.1 Surface treatment only to be performed by properly trained & experienced personnel
while observing the safety regulations such as usage of gloves, masks & goggles while
performing the operation.
