M.Phil. / Ph. D. ADMISSIONS BROCHURE (2015-16)

GITAM University offers the following Research programmes for the year 2015-16.
1. M.Phil. (Full-time / Part-time)
2. Ph.D. (Full-time / Part-time)
I.

GENERAL:

1. The Directorate of Admissions, GITAM University invites applications for admission

into Research programmes in the subject areas as indicated in Appendix-I based on
merit in the qualifying examination and entrance examination and as per the
admission rules and regulations.
2. Admission for the following categories will be taken up during any time of the year.
(i)
(ii)

Candidates with JRF (CSIR/UGC/NET qualification).

Candidates selected as project fellows in the projects sanctioned by national
funding agencies.
(iii) Candidates under FIP programme.
(iv) Candidates under extramural category.
3. Eligibility criteria for M.Phil. /Ph.D. programmes offered are given in Appendix-II.
4. Candidates are advised to go through the information brochure carefully
and apply for admission. The admission will be based on the information
provided by the candidate at the time of application only.
5. (i) A candidate must satisfy the admission criteria.
(ii) A candidate must secure prescribed marks in the entrance
examination and personal interview.
6. Candidates admitted to full-time M.Phil./Ph.D. should not undertake any assignment
/ employment or shall not pursue any other full-time programme of study
simultaneously.
7. The University reserves the right to admit or not to admit the candidate
into any Research programme.

II.

HOW TO APPLY:

1. Candidates have to submit a separate application form for each

programme: M.Phil./Ph.D. along with a Demand Draft for ` 3,000/- (Rupees
Three thousand only) towards registration fee in favour of GITAM University
drawn on any scheduled bank payable at Visakhapatnam. The name of the
applicant should be written on the reverse side of the D.D.
2. The filled-in application should reach along with all enclosures to the
Director, Admissions GITAM University, GN Campus, Rushikonda, Visakhapatnam 530 045 (Andhra Pradesh) on or before 31stJuly, 2015.
3. The Office of the Directorate of Admissions will not take any responsibility for the
non-receipt of application sent by post / courier due to any other reason whatsoever.
III.

ADMISSION INFORMATION:

1. Admission shall be based on the percentage of marks in the qualifying

examination and entrance examination and personal interview subject to
the fulfillment of the eligibility criteria following the rule of reservation.
2. Candidates at the time of admission are required to submit the following original
certificates in support of their qualification and reservation if claimed in the
application.
i.

Postgraduate / M.Phil. Original degree / provisional certificate.

ii.

Marks statements of qualifying examination.

iii.

Transfer and Conduct certificate from the Institution where the candidate last
studied.

iv.

Certificate of NET/GATE/GPAT score card.

v.

Migration certificate for candidates from other than GITAM University.

vi.

Date of birth certificate (SSC / Matriculation or equivalent certificate).

vii.

Integrated community certificate issued by the competent authority in case

of SC/ST candidates.

viii.

Medical Certificate from not below the rank of a Civil Surgeon in case of PHC.

ix.

Physical fitness certificate.

x.

One set of Xerox copies of all the above certificates.

xi.

Service certificate and No objection certificate from the present employer

(for part-time candidates only).

IV.

ELIGIBILITY AND FEE STRUCTURE:

A. Eligibility for M.Phil. Programme:

1. Full-Time:
a) Postgraduate degree holders of GITAM University or any other University recognized
by the GITAM University as equivalent thereto with at least second class securing
at least 55% of marks or equivalent grade (50% in the case of SC/ST candidates)
in the concerned subject or in an allied subject can register for fulltime M.Phil.
Degree.
b) Admissions shall be based on Entrance Test (GURCET) followed by
interview.
c) The candidates qualified in CSIR-UGC (NET), ICMR, GATE, GPAT and Project fellows
working in the projects recognized in national funding agencies with one year
experience are eligible to join M.Phil. (FT) without appearing for the above test.
2. Part-Time:
a) Candidates satisfying the above eligibility conditions can be registered as Part-Time
candidates in the following order of priority and by following service seniority in the
respective cadre.
b) Teachers working in PG Departments of recognized Universities and their affiliated
Colleges with a minimum of one year of service.
c) Teachers working in Degree colleges and other professional colleges affiliated to
recognized Universities with at least two years of service.
d) Executives / Administrators / Engineers / Scientists with at least three years of
service in Govt. / Quasi Govt. / Judiciary / Public Sector organizations / Public and
Private Limited Companies and other organizations approved by Board or Research
Studies.
e) Teachers working in approved Junior Colleges with atleast three years of service.
f) Employees not covered in the above clauses with at least four years of service as
approved by Board of Research Studies.

Duration and fee structure for M.Phil. Programme:

The duration of M.Phil. (full-time) shall be 12 months. The candidate is required to
spend the prescribed period of 12 months in the concerned department of the
University.
The duration of M.Phil. (part-time) shall be two years. The candidate is required to
spend at least 8 weeks in total in each year in the concerned department of the
University to complete course work and all the requirements for the award of the
Degree.
Following is the Fee structure for M.Phil. Programme:
M.Phil. (Full-Time)
1st Year ` 48,500/-

M.Phil. (Part-Time)
1st Year ` 42,500/2nd Year ` 36,500/-

A candidate is required to pay ` 5,000/- towards adjudication fees at the time

of submission of M.Phil. thesis.
B. Eligibility for Ph.D. Programme:
Candidates pursuing the degree of Ph.D. whether Full-time, Part-time or
Interdisciplinary or Extramural shall possess the minimum qualifications for admission
as specified below:
1.

Full-Time:

a)

Post-graduate degree holders of GITAM University or any other University

recognized by the GITAM University as equivalent thereto with at least second
class securing at least 55% of marks or equivalent grade (50% in the case SC/ST
candidates) in the subject concerned or in an allied subject can register for fulltime Ph.D. Degree.

b)

Admissions are based on entrance test (GURCET) followed by Interview.

c)

The candidates qualified in CSIR-UGC (NET), ICMR, GATE, GPAT, Project Fellows
working in the projects recognized by national funding agencies at least for one
year will be considered for admission without appearing for entrance test.

d)

Candidates admitted into full time Ph.D. programme need to complete

prescribed course work.

2. Part-Time:
Candidates satisfying the above eligibility conditions can register as part time candidates
in the following order of priority and on the basis of service seniority in each category.
a) Teachers working in any postgraduate department of any recognized University or its
affiliated Colleges with minimum of one year of service.
b) Scientists working in research institutions recognized by GITAM University with a
minimum of two years of service.
c) Teachers working in any affiliated Degree / Professional Colleges with a minimum of
three years of service.
d) Executives / Administrators / Engineers with at least three years of service in Govt.
/ Quasi Govt. / Judiciary / Public Sector organizations / Public and Private Limited
Companies and other organizations approved by BRS.
e) Teachers working in Junior Colleges with at least four years of service.
f) Any other employee not covered above with at least five years of service.
3. Duration and Fee structure for Ph.D. Programme:
The duration of Ph.D. (full-time) is three years for Masters degree holders in Science
/ Management / M.E. / M.Tech. / M.C.A. / M.L. / LL.M / M.Pharm. / M.D.S./ M.S. / M.D.
degree holders from the date of registration.
The duration of Ph.D. (part-time) is four years for Masters degree holders in Science
/ Management / M.E. / M.Tech. / M.C.A. / M.L. / LL.M / M.Pharm. / M.D.S / M.D / M.S./
degree holders from the date of registration.
The duration of Ph.D. is two years (Full-Time) / three years (Part-Time) for candidates
possessing M.Phil. Degree.
A part time candidate, in organizations other than GITAM University will be required to
spend a semester in the University campus during the prescribed total period of research
and complete course work prescribed.

C.

Extramural:
For admission into Ph.D. Programme under Extramural category, there should be
an internal guide (Principal guide) recognized by GITAM University in the
recognized Research Institution where the candidate is working and a co-guide
from GITAM University. Eligibility for admission into extramural category shall be:
a) Scientists working in research institutions recognized by GITAM University who
have PG or equivalent degree and at least two years of experience.
b) Research scholars with PG or equivalent degree having fellowship attached to
Institutions recognized by GITAM University.
c) Registration for an extramural candidate may be done at any time of the year.

D.

Interdisciplinary:
A Candidate who registers for Ph.D. whose work involves more than one
department in the University will be admitted under Interdisciplinary category and
will be registered in the department in which the major part of the research work
is to be carried out under the guidance of a Research Guide and a Co-Research
Guide from the other department.
The Candidate who wishes to pursue Interdisciplinary research must submit a
statement of purpose along with the application. The statement may contain the
objective, definition of the problem, method, justification and the disciplines
involved.

V.

Research Assistantships:
A few selected full-time Ph.D. candidates based on merit will be considered for
Research Fellowship / Assistantships.
