    Transposing Instruments

    As a rule, Instrument in X means, written C sounds X below.


    Examples:
    Clarinet in A written C sounds the A below, interval of transposition is a minor 3rd.
    Horn in F written C sounds the F below, interval of transposition is a perfect 5th.

    Exceptions!!!
    There are some exceptions, Instruments in D, E flat or E transpose upwards i.e. a written C would
    sound the D, E flat and E above!
    The biggest exception is Trumpet in F, which occurs rarely and only in late 19th century works for
    large orchestra. A written C sounds the F above!

    Instruments in C do not transpose.

    The following instruments you just need to know about:


    The Cor Anglais sounds a perfect 5th lower than written.
    The piccolo sounds a perfect 8ve higher than written.
    The Double Bass and Contra Bassoon, sound a perfect 8ve lower than written.
    The Bass Clarinet sounds a major 9th lower than written.
