whentheyareinfactjustcuringsuffering.Theo

compulsivelyfordifferentobjectsofpleasurebuthaspeaceandcontentment.
2)SamudayaSacca:ThecauseofthisrestlessnessandpleasureseekingisSamudaya(thethreeTanha).
RupaandMamaneverstopworking;seeing,hearing,touching,smelling,investigating,determining,etc.
3)NirodhaSacca:Characterizedbyfreedomfromrestlessness,becauseitisfreeofTanha;hasthe
peacefulnessofNibbana.

HowthisPracticeFitstheFourNobleTruths
1)Itshowsthetruthofsuffering:Andsowepracticetorealizesuffering.SufferingisRupaandNama.
2)Itshowsdefilementsleadtosuffering:SowepracticetoeradicateTanha.Themorewerealizesuffering
themorecraving(Tanha)iseradicatedbecauseTanhahasthewrongviewthatRupaandNamaarewe,

impermanence,knowswithwisdomthesensations,theirarising,theircessationandthepathleadingto

Therearethesethreetypesofbodilysensations.Whatarethethree?
Therearepleasantsensation,unpleasantsensationandsensationwhichisneutral.TheNobleEightfoldPath
shouldbepracticedforthecompleteknowledge,thefullrealization,thegradualeradicationandthe
abandonmentofthesethreebodilysensations.

it'stheendingofclingingtoanyandallconditionedphenomenathattheBuddhacallsthedeathless
(Amata)liberationofmind(CittassaVimokkha)

MentalPain(Irritation,Stress,Frustration,LossofLovedOne)

SamudayaSacca
ThesecondNobleTruthisthetruthofthecauseofsuffering
(Samudaya)whichiscravingorTanha.TherearethreekindsofTanha:
1)Kamatanha(sensualcraving)ofthefivesenses(form,sound,odor,taste,touch)for
Kammacunda(sensualpleasureorsensualobjects).Ifthereisnopleasureinsensualobjects,
thereisnoKamatanha.Forexample,ifyouhaveIndriyasamvarasila(senserestraint)withall
fivesenses,youwillhavenoKamatanhaatthattime.Kamatanhaiscompletelyerasedatthe
AnagamiPath(OnceReturner)
2)Bhavatanha(cravingforexistence).Bhavameansliterallybecoming,whichrefersto
repeatedandsuccessiveexistencefromrebirth.TherearethirtyoneBhava,orstatesof
becoming,rangingfrombirthinthestatesofunhappinessandgoinguptothehighest
heavenlystate.Bhavatanhacausespeoplewhoareevenmortallyillorseriouslyinjuredor
handicappedtoclingtolifeandfeardeath.BhavatanhaiserasedattheArahattaPath.
3)Vibhavatanha(cravingfornonexistence).ThisistheAnnihilationistviewthatthereiso
nly
o
nelifeanditendsatdeath.Thus,becausethereiso
nlyo
nelife,theannihilationistwantsto
haveasmuchpleasureaspossible,whilestillalive.TheStreamWinnerpathmoment
eradicatesVibhavatanha.
EveryonehasKamatanha,butwithKamatanhatheyeitherhaveBhavaTanhaorVibhavatanhathatis,they
craveexistenceornonexistence.Allofthe3typesofTanhaaboveresultinrebirthinanewexistence.
(Bhumi).
Andsothecravingandaversionarisingfromignorantlyidentifyingwithconditionedphenomena,andthe
inevitablesufferingthatresultsfromsuchidentificationandcraving,constitutesthetruthoftheoriginof
suffering.
3.
NirodhaSacca
ThethirdNobleTruthNirodhaisthecessationorextinctionofsuffering.
NirodhaandNibbanaarethesame.NibbanaistheDhammathatextinguishesKilesa,andsoDukkha.
ThisisdonebyextinguishingthecauseofDukkhaSamudayaorthethreeTanha(Craving,Hunger,
andLonging):
1.
Cravingfor"sensuality"or"sensualpleasures"(KamaTanha)
2.
Cravingfor"becoming"or"existence"(BhavaTanha)
3.
Cravingfor"nobecoming"or"nonexistence"or"extermination"(VibhavaTanha)
InNibbanamomentarilythereisnoDukkha,becausethefiveKhandasareextinguished.Thisoccursbriefly
inthethoughtmomentcalledMaggaSacca.WhenthepractitionerrealizesDukkhabywisdomthenone
knowsthatTanhaisthecauseandsooneknowsthatonemustgetridofTanha.Whenthecauseis
extinguished,theresultisextinguished.
IfTanhaiscompletelyeradicated,thenfinalNibbanaisreached,andArahantship.Ifthepractitionerdoesnt
realizetanhaisharmful,hecantreachNibbanaandthusextinguishDukkha.Nibbanais:
Theextinctionofthefiresofgreed,ofhatred,andofignorance;theunconditioned;thesupremegoalof
Buddhism;theSummumBonumofBuddhism;thefinalemancipation;theextinctionofalldefilementsand
suffering.
ThecharacteristicofNirodha(Nibbana)ispeacefulness,quietudeandfreedomfromKilesa.Theo
newho
realizesNibbanaisgoodanddesirableisalsotheo
newhowillrealizesufferingintheworld(theFive
Khandas).Ifo
nethinkstheworldishappy,Nibbanahasnomeaningforhim.
ThereisnorebirthinNibbanaandnodeath.ThereisnoRupaandNamaanymore,orFiveKhandas;Rupa
andNamaarenolongertheobjectofmeditation.Nibbanaisnotaplace,butitstillexists.Itislikethe
wind;youo
nlyknowitbyitseffect.
NibbanaisanobjectofanexcellentorspecialSacca,whichisMaggaSacca.Theordinarypersonis
saturatedinKilesaandMaggaSaccacannotariseinhimunlesshetakesupthepracticeofVipassana.So
whenhepracticesVipassanatheSaccaoftheo
newhopracticesbecomespurified,andthatiscalled
MaggaSacca,whichhasNibbanaasanobject.NibbanaisnotSacca;NibbanaistheobjectofSacca,which
isMaggaSacca.
Theo
newhoreachesNibbanaknowsbyoneselfonedoesnotneedateachertotellhim.Nobodycan
reachNibbanauntilonepracticesVipassanaandVipassanaPannabecomesMaggaSacca.
NibbanaistheendofDukkha,butyoucantreachNibbanaunlessyoufollowtheEightFoldPath.Thereare
twokindsofNibbana:
1)Saupadisesanibbana(Nibbanarealizedwiththebodyremaining).Thisiswithkilesaextinguished
butFiveKhandasremaining.
2)Anupadisesanibbana(NibbanarealizedwithbothKilesaandFiveKhandasextinguished.)Thisis
thedeathofbodyandmindofo
newithoutdefilement,andiscalledParinibbana.

MaggaSacca
ThefourthNobleTruthMaggaSaccawhichistheEightFoldPathleadingtothewayout
ofsuffering.
Maggameanspath,andthatpathleadstoNibbana,whichistheDhammathatextinguishessuffering.
Thereiso

newaytofollowtheEightFoldPathandthatisbypracticingSatipathana,whichisthefirst
pathofBodhipakkhiyadhamma,andleadstopurification,ortheeliminationofKilesa.TheEightFoldPathis

thoughtisveryimportant.ItisusedtohelpAtapiAtiSampajannatoworkcorrectlyinSatipathana.

orwoman.ItisSabhava.ThusnobodyrealizesDukkhaSacca,nobodyeradicatesSamudayaSacca,
nobodyreachesNirodhaSacca,andnobody
developsMaggaSacca.
WisdomthatRealizestheFourNobleTruths
1)ThewisdomthatrealizesDukkhaalsoextinguishesVipallasa(perversityofperceptioni.e.
bodyandmindarepermanent,etc.)
2)ThewisdomthatrealizesSamudaya(causeofsuffering)changesthewrongviewthatwewere
createdbyahigherpower,insteadofbeingtheresultofcauses.
3)ThewisdomthatrealizesNirodhacorrectsthewrongviewaboutfalseNibbana,whichiscreated
bySamadhi.
4)ThewisdomthatrealizesMaggaerasesanyclingingtowrongpracticeandshowsthetruepaththatends
suffering.
BecauseTanhaiseradicated(thecause),theworldofthefiveKhandasisextinguished,andsoDukkhais
extinguished.ThewisdomthatrealizestheFourNobleTruthsisfoundo
nlyinBuddhism.
