After two-and-a-half years of persistent fundraising

and meticulous planning, the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games took Strathmore by storm last weekend
as a result of much support, dedication, and the efforts of roughly 850 volunteers.
Over the past several months, nearly 1,300 seniors
from across the province excelled in their zone qualifiers for a chance to compete for a medal in Strathmore.
And while the success of the athletes and numerous new records proved to be highlights of the
games, tremendous hard work behind the scenes allowed for the competition to run smoothly even
with heavy rain showers on Friday postponing outdoor events to the next day.
Its been a long process but very gratifying and rewarding to see it all come to a successful head, said
Joss Binns, activities director for the Strathmore 2015
Alberta55 Plus Summer Games.
The amount of volunteers was just amazing, because they did everything you asked them to do with
a smile. I think from what weve heard it was a
huge success. In just talking to people whove been
to several of these games, they went through the
food and through the competitions, and they said
this is the best theyve ever been to. So thats always
nice to hear.
The organization approached the Town of Strathmore for financial support last year, and with the
help of local support and several large fundraisers
Beatlemania concert, Flames Alumni hockey game,
and 2015 Dream Vacation Raffle was able to reach
their estimated $1.2 million budget.
The organizers also struggled with a lack of volunteers early on, but as the games edged closer, that
number skyrocketed to over their projected 800 people. Volunteers flocked to Strathmore from areas such
as Calgary, Carseland, and Airdrie, eager to help out.
Without any major hiccups and more participants
from Strathmore than ever before, the town cclassified the event a success.
I think the town benefited in lots of ways, and we
also got some awareness, said Tracy Simpson, community services coordinator for the Town of Strathmore.
I think its important for our senior population to
stay active and to find different ways to engage in the
community. I also think its going to be a great legacy
in how people perceive our community. We successfully hosted an event and the people who came are
going to have positive thoughts of Strathmore and
theyre going to share that with people. Its important
to have that positive image out there in the province.

Wheatland County council had the
opportunity to highlight some of the issues coming up in the future for local
residents, in a face-to-face chat with
MLA Derek Fildebrandt, when he visited
council on July 7.
On the agriculture front, Councillor
Ben Armstrong mentioned drought conditions and the fact farmers claiming insurance on ruined crops could not run
cows on the land after claims had been
submitted.
It affects all Alberta, Armstrong said.
It is just the way the process works.
Councillor Alice Booth suggested that
yields were down about 50 per cent and
there needed to be a change in insurance regulations.
Councillor Rex Harwood had concerns
about farm loans. While government had
doubled the amount, it cut the funding
pool in half, which limited the farmers
that could access funding.
Reeve Glenn Koester also had concerns with the current agricultural resource programs for farmers.
I have farmed my whole life and I
have seen policies come and go. Unfortunately some the of the good ones go,
said Koester.
He said most farmers are canny and

know what affects their businesses. He
said programs in the past allowed farmers more control to plan for retirement
or low yield years and provide help
to rebuild losses. He would like to see
some changes.
There was the chance to inform Fildebrandt of some of the innovative
programs Wheatland County was supporting, like the floating island project
in Carseland, where nutrients are taken
from effluent ponds to reduce phosphorous levels in the environment.
In Rosebud experiments using algae
for sewage treatment are ongoing. It is
hoped the algae and the treated water
can be sold, generating new revenue
streams for rural economies. There have
been some delays with Alberta Environment accepting the projects possibilities
and they are hoping the test project will
provided necessary information to move
the process forward.
I firmly believe it is a worthwhile
project, said Koester.
Booth commented that rural residents
were being treated as second class citizens when it came to hospital care.
Health care seems to centre on major
urban centres and I would like to see
some expansion for rural areas, said
Booth.
Fildebrandt said the current government seemed to be supporting the current super board structure and is not
moving toward decentralized services.
Reeve Koester qualified that each
councillor has ideas for change, but any
council recommendations would come
to Fildebrandt through written correspondence. He invited Fildebrandt to
join them at meetings with provincial
ministers at the various conferences attended by council over the year.

Woodturner wins first place

at Calgary Stampede

Behind Joe Van Keulens ordinary
looking garage door hides a fully
equipped woodturning workshop that
houses an unparalleled talent and numerous nonpareil creations one of
which won first place for woodworking
at the Calgary Stampede this year.
The Strathmore resident stumbled
across woodturning a decade ago, and
upon retirement adapted his technique
to include dyes, stains, wood burning,
dental drills, and airbrushing. His creative approaches - such as pyrography
and piercing - and out-of-the-box thinking, led to much recognition and multiple awards over the years.
I did things with wood all along,
building stuff, but I wanted to be more
creative and then I found out about
woodturning, said Van Keulen. Eight
years ago or so, there was a big show
of all these people who do this for a living, and I saw stuff I couldnt imagine.
So thats when I really got hooked on it.
Woodturners usually dont do this. They
turn wood and its round. But the more
I add, the more difficult it is for anyone
else to copy me.
Born and raised in the Netherlands,
Van Keulen moved his family to Strathmore in 1982, and worked as a power
engineer for Agrium. After participating
in a woodturning course in Calgary, Van
Keulen quickly turned his passion into
what he called a second career. While
power engineering and woodturning
differ overall, he was able to apply some
of his engineering skills in creating his
own woodturning tools.
When he is not busy with to-do lists
created by his family, Van Keulen can
be found in his garage for a minimum
of four hours a day, creating one-of-akind objects by hand. Often working on
five pieces at a time, the artist utilizes
maple, birch, and ash, found locally east
of Strathmore, while incorporating the
natural cracks and imperfections of the
wood in his products.
Joe Van Keulen received first place for his wooden platter at the 2015 Calgary Stampede. The
woodturner utilizes dyes, airbrush techniques,
and wood burning to create his works of art.
I honestly didnt know that I had this

in me, he said. Im the colourful guy,
and people ask how do you do this
stuff? and I tell them, and then they go
home and dont do it. Theres a lot of
things I learned the hard way, but Im
willing to go over the top.
His attitude contributed to entering a
thin wooden platter with a butterfly and
flower design pierced out of the material, this year at the Calgary Stampede.
The Strathmore local entered pieces into
the competition for the past three years,
winning various awards each year.
The platter will be showcased at the
FCSS boardroom at 85 Lakeside Blvd in
the near future.

The Village of Rockyford
will be hosting their 58th annual rodeo, and despite the
decline of small-town rodeos, this rodeo only seems to
be growing.
The event will run through
the weekend of July 24-26 at
the Rockyford Ag Grounds
and is expected to see about
1,000 people at the event.
This weekend is huge for
all local businesses, said Justin Geeraert, the Rockyford
Lions Club president. They
get a lot of business over
the weekend and it draws a
lot of money into the Lions
Club. All that money goes
back into the community, so
all in all it is a major event

for the small community of
Rockyford.
The event will have the
usual rodeo events such as
bull riding, saddle broncs,
calf-roping and chuckwagons.
There will be local events
such as sheep riding and
miniature wild horse racing
on Saturday and Sunday.
Rodeo fans will also be
able to enjoy pancake breakfasts, BBQ beef suppers
and outdoor beer gardens.
At the end of the Friday,
families can enjoy some oldfashioned fun at the family
dance; while cowboys can
showcase their dance moves
at the Cowboy Ball on Saturday.

packages welcomes new Canadians

The Strathmore Library recently came up with
a new initiative to welcome immigrants into the
community through the use of packages created
for immigrants coming to Strathmore.
The packages are the brainchild of Carmen
Erison, the Assistant Director of Library Services,
who came up with the idea after she attended a
Wheatland interagency meeting in June.
A member of the Filipino association gave a
presentation during which Erison found that
Strathmore has a large Filipino community.
We have come to find that there is a large
group of immigrants in Strathmore, said Erison.
What we wanted to do is encourage them to
come to the library as it is a great resource for
people coming to our country.
Currently there are 20 packages in each Spanish and Tagalog, which the library has identified
as the two main languages coming to the community. Erison hopes to expand them if the turnout

The packages themselves include translated
brochures for adults and kids, and information
about the library and services they offer. Erison
hopes the packages will help to show the newcomers that their library has something for them.
One of the services offered is the Mango learning services which features the ability for Spanish speakers to learn English as a Secondary Language (ESL).
The packages have been handed over to the
Foothills Community Immigrant Services, as they
are the ones that handle new immigrants coming
into Strathmore. The packages will be available
from them as early as next week.
The Foothills Community Immigrant Services
have also helped to translate the information and
brochures in the packages.
This has just been wonderful to be able to have
this service in our community and be able to appeal to new immigrants, said Erison. Hopefully
we can see more of those groups coming into the
library and using our library services.

Fighting for health & seniors care

Health and seniors care is the most important
local issue facing Strathmore-Brooks right now.
During the recent election, I committed to being
a champion for health and seniors care in the
legislature. I said that I would fight to get longstanding promises followed through on.
My work on this file has two approaches. Some
province-wide issues have sharp differences between parties. Other issues are non-partisan, and
are just a matter of the government treating all
regions fairly in delivering basic services.
First: fairness. In Strathmore, the provincial
government promised an upgraded hospital with
direct access for seniors care in 1997, 2007 and
2012. By 2015, the government stopped pretending that the promise was even made and ignored
the problem.
This is unacceptable. The Strathmore Hospital
has fantastic, professional employees that work
miracles for patients every day, but the facility is
woefully inadequate. Seniors that need care onsite are not getting it.
The Bassano Project has brought together community stakeholders to propose a world-class, rural seniors care facility to serve Newell County
and Brooks. Volunteers have poured hundreds of
hours into the project that seeks to give seniors
the care, independence and choice that they need
and deserve. All that is needed now is the final
sign-off by the provincial government.
During my maiden speech to the Legislature, I
spoke at length about both the Strathmore Hospital and Bassano Project. Because 70 of the 87
MLAs were newly elected for the first time, I felt
that it was important for them to be made aware
of the situation in Strathmore-Brooks.
I also raised the issue with the Minister of
Health and Seniors three times during Question
Period. I pressed the minister for a commitment
to work with my constituents and I to ensure that
these commitments are not forgotten. She gave
no concrete answers, other than to say that shed
look into it as she becomes better briefed. The
minister is quite new in her job, and so she understandably was not aware of these two files.
Nonetheless, these two issues are urgent and
need to be pressed.
On an Alberta-wide scale, the new NDP government made a move in June that should deeply
worry rural and small-town Albertans. While there
is much to criticize in the way that the previous
government delivered healthcare, it had begun
the process of returning healthcare back to local
control. This was a hugely positive move away
from the centralized, bureaucratic model run out
of a single office in Edmonton, and towards professionals on the ground making the decisions
that only they are qualified to make.
Unfortunately, one of the first moves by the
new government was to scrap this initiative, and
to retrench the top-down bureaucratic status quo
based in Edmonton. This might keep a few more
government employees on the payroll in the capital, but it will not begin to fix a horribly broken
system that sees Alberta spend the most money
per capita on healthcare in the country, with only
mediocre results.
On this issue, the Wildrose Shadow Minister of
Health and MLA for Cyprus-Medicine Hat, Drew
Barnes has been pressing the government hard.
This is an area of fundamental disagreement with
the NDP, and we will press them to re-examine
their views at every opportunity.
Province-wide issues like centralized healthcare versus local decision making have sharp
differences between parties, and well just have
to agree to disagree with the NDP; but issues like
the Strathmore Hospital and the Bassano Project
are non-ideological, and just a matter of the government treating all regions of the province fairly
in delivering basic services.
On provincial issues like decentralizing our
broken healthcare system, I will continue to challenge the governments views and assumptions.
On issues like the Strathmore Hospital and Bassano Project however, I will work cooperatively and
constructively with the NDP Minister of Health
and Seniors to get results.
Over the summer, I will continue to reach out
to the minister and ensure that these projects do
not get pushed aside and forgotten.
Its too early to tell if or when we will get results, but I will continue to make this my top priority until we do.

Added clause protects council and staff

Town council was asked to consider adding a clause into
the Land Use Bylaw (LUB) to protect council and staff, after
repercussions from an oversight bogged down administration with unnecessary paperwork.
The Municipal Government Act (MGA) originally stated
that a refused or appealed development permit application
could not be resubmitted for the same or similar intent with-
in six months.
The clause was removed and the MGA now
places the responsibility on the LUB to designate
a time.
However, as the clause was not carried over
to the newly adopted LUB, administration approached council on July 8, requesting an amendment to the document that ensures a refused
development permit application cannot be resubmitted for the same or similar purposes within six
months.

Parliamentary Report

We have been having a good summer so far. It
has been wonderful seeing so many constituents
at many events in and around our riding, including Canada Day celebrations, the Calgary Stampede, a number of parades, grand openings, and
more. As your Member of Parliament, I always encourage everyone to come out and attend these
local events as they are always rewarding.
Many constituents raise concerns about poor
economic reports coming from too many economies around the world: the situation in Greece
and its effect on the European economy, the slow
recovery of the U.S. economy, and a dramatic
economic slowdown in Chinas growth including
stock market problems, among other difficulties.
China is the largest growing source of new customers for Canadas exports; the U.S. is our largest
customer. While Canada already has substantial
trade with numerous locations in Europe, there
are hundreds of millions of potential customers
there and we are anxious to expand our trade
with them.
Yet, the difficulties these markets are facing
cause a reduction or curtailment in Canadas ability to sell to these customers. Too often we hear
that they cannot currently afford our goods and
services and reduce their orders or hesitate before
placing new ones.
The undeniable fact remains that the global
economy remains fragile and is impacting Canadas performance with forces beyond Canadas
borders and control. Now more than ever Canada
must continue with our low tax plan. We have a
balanced federal budget without built-in or ongoing structural deficits. We have taxes that are at
the lowest level in 50 years for individuals and
businesses. These fiscally responsible policies are
serving our nation well in these times of global

economic uncertainty.
Our country is one of very few economic jurisdictions that do not suffer from internationally-sourced credit downgrades. Many foreign
politicians, economists and others recognize that
Canada has it right in terms of working to bolster
our economy against negative off-shore effects.
Our Conservative government has worked hard
to help create over 1.2 million net new jobs for
Canadians that are overwhelmingly full-time, private sector jobs in high-wage industries. We have
worked with every sector in Canadas economy
toward preventing investment freezes and to realize every bit of economic growth that can be
had.
It is true, that the International Monetary Fund
has slightly reduced Canadas economic growth
rate to 1.5 per cent in 2015 versus their prediction in April of a 2.2 per cent gain for Canada.
Compared to the plight being faced by too many
nations that we trade with, and the IMFs predictions for them, the IMFs latest prediction is not
so disappointing. Canada will continue to have
economic growth in 2015; Canadas economy is
well placed with the short and mid-term problems
from the global economy that continue to impact
us; and, we are well-prepared to work for the economic prosperity we will be able to achieve, once
our major trading partners can progress from their
various current challenges.

When Henry and Florence Hilton
immigrated to Canada in 1910, they
couldnt foretell that one day their five
grandchildren of Leonard and Audrey
Hilton, all born within five years, would
be celebrating birthdays together well
into their 80s.
With all five siblings in splendid
health, Doug, Ron, Gordon, Maureen
and Rosemary have celebrated some
monumental milestones over the years,
including each of their 60th wedding
anniversaries.
While Maureen and Rosemary live in
Edmonton and Ontario, the three brothers all moved to Strathmore with their
families a few years ago. As the brothers
each raised five children of their own,
getting together now requires renting
out the Strathmore Golf Club, in order
to accommodate the families that can
swell to more than 70 members strong,
considering grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
We get together once a year, all three
families, before Christmas and we meet
at the golf course and celebrate, said
Betty Hilton, wife of Ron Hilton. That
time of year is kind of mandatory that
everybody turn up. And weve had wonderful results from all three families
that will come and be together the one
time of the year.
Henry Hilton, a tailor from England,
became a farmer upon purchasing a
homestead in Nightingale. The farm has
since been manned by the familys five
generations.
Having organized family get-togethers between the three Strathmore-based
families for years, family members said
its a wonderful chance for everyone to
catch up.
One such occasion presented itself in

June, when the twins, Ron and Doug,

blew out their 85th birthday candles.
They just keep going, and they certainly outlived the time of their parents,
said Betty Hilton. Their mom was 83,
and their dad was only 75. So theyve
done very well, all of them. We enjoy
it, but I think our own kids, that are in
their 50s and 60s, they enjoy it too because they dont get to see their cousins
that often. Theyre here and there and
everywhere.
Instead of throwing a larger party,
as they had done for their 80th birthday, the twins celebrated with an open
house.
There was about 50 of us throughout the afternoon, said Norma Hilton,
Dougs wife. You get to know who the
kids are, otherwise you dont see them
for years and you dont even know what
their names are.

However, while the large families
share similar interests and values, especially rooted in the agricultural business, Norma said the relationships are
based on friendships. And while many
Europeans who travelled to Canada
ended up moving back during that time,
the Hiltons are grateful for their grandfathers decision to stay.
I think its just having respect for each
other, and were all different but you respect each other and accept the good
and bad, said Viola Hilton, Gordons
wife. We never give it much thought
and we just take for granted that its
just part of it. Our kids and their cousins always had a good relationship as
well. So, thank goodness great-grandpa
decided not to go back [to England] because thats how were all here.

In preparation for the summer games,
some of Strathmores facilities received
some much-needed upgrades, including the tennis courts, bocce courts, and
other facilities.
Board chair Donalda Ladene remains
optimistic that the games not only inspired participants and seniors to continue to stay active, but that Strathmore
proved it can handle larger crowds to
accommodate other events.
The best way I can describe it, is like
a pebble going into the water and the
ripple effect, said Ladene. The pebble
was the idea of bringing the summer
games to Strathmore and ever since
then its been an ongoing ripple effect,
and I dont think we will see the end of
that ripple effect for a while.

Fifty-eight-year-old Stephen Wiewel learned to
swim in a river near a small town in Manitoba
where he grew up. As an adult, he never received
any formal training, and never swam competitively. In fact, the only experience he had in the pool
was his leisurely swims every morning since the
pools construction in Strathmore nearly a decade
ago. Yet last weekend, during the Strathmore 2015
Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games, Wiewel blew everyone out of the water, and took to the podium
to collect a total of four gold medals.
Normally when I swim in the morning I dont
necessarily swim for speed, said Wiewel. Its a
little bit different when you are in a race than
when you swimming for exercise in the morning.
I kind of got hooked on the events and Im going to try and continue to participate in the games
as the years progress.
Wiewel was one of 1,289 Albertan athletes aged
55 and older, and one of two participants representing Strathmore in the pool. Susan Lust, 67, a
former member of the Alberta swim team, hadnt
competed for 50 years but began actively training four days a week since March 31. Surrounded
by her family and two former Alberta swim team
teammates, Lust dipped into her erstwhile competitive edge and secured three silver medals on
July 18.
I was hoping for a gold but Im quite happy
and was really tickled to get three silvers, said
Lust.
You have to be able to swim pretty well, be-
cause they werent slouches, thats for sure. The

big thing is that now Im really hyped up to keep
training; keep swimming. And I know thats the
best thing that I can do for my health. Im going
to go again in two years and try again, and Ill get
gold.
Twenty-eight participants from Strathmore and
area competed in the games that included arts
and crafts, Bocce, shuffleboard, athletics, cycling,
cribbage, and Pickleball, to name a few. As 24 of
the participants took home at least one medal,
a total of 81 medals were distributed to participants from Zone 2 Big Country - that ranked
fifth overall.
Participants from all over the province gathered at the Wheatland Elementary School, racing
around the tracks, aiming javelins, and throwing
shot put, while breaking 42 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games records in the process.
Strathmores own Theo Owel, who also finished
with three silver medals, raced against Calgarys
David Guss in the 55 Plus mens 1,500 metre, who
smashed the record by a minute with a time of
4:55.
I think this is a record number of participants
in track and field, and we had 96 participants
which is I think the highest its ever been, said
Joss Binns, activities director for the Strathmore
2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer games.
We had some very good quality athletes out
of Calgary. I would say the majority of records
were broken by Calgary athletes who belong to
the track clubs in Calgary. They came out for this
competition and thats why they did really well.

Regular trailblazer Nessie Hollicky
was one of those athletes, whose late
husband told her she was too slow
to run a marathon in celebration of
her 80th birthday four years ago. But
that didnt stop her last weekend on
her 84th birthday, when the Calgary
woman, whose friends joke is a battery that never runs out, did exactly
that. Hollicky ran in four events, and
set a record of 14:35 for the 1,500 meter run in her age group - an ideal
birthday present.
However, Hollicky wasnt surprised
by her success. The mother of six
was nearing 60 years of age when
she picked up a book about running
when youre 40. Since then, Hollicky
gets up every morning at 5 a.m. to
run and has collected over 800 medals, participated in 15 marathons, and
came first in the 75+ category at the
Honolulu marathon.
A gal in Calgary, when I was running, said Oh her walk is strong, of
course she kept on running, but I felt
like saying lady that was my run,

joked Hollicky.
Its just weird because I try and go
faster and it just doesnt work.
Strathmore put in the bid to host
the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games
over two years ago and required the
help of over 800 volunteers to ensure its success a goal many participants and volunteers feel was accomplished.

ARGRA contemplates staying in Strathmore

Criticism of Strathmores
participation during the Canadian Rockies International
Rodeo and Music Festival received some backlash from
local business owners and
residents, at a time when the
Alberta Rockies Gay Rodeo
Association (ARGRA) is contemplating its next move.
After seven years of embracing some unconventional contests steer decorating,
wild drag racing, and goat
dressing the association is
entertaining the idea of relocating to another town.
As ARGRAs three-year
contract expires, other municipalities have expressed
interest in hosting the worldrenowned event, in concurrence with lower than
expected turnout at last
months concerts. Despite efforts to attract bigger crowds
with support from the Village People, LeAnn Rimes,
and George Canyon, expectations fell flat when attendance didnt come close to
the projected 5,000 patrons.
We need to do what we
need to do to survive, so are
we coming back? I hope so,
said Jason Baker, president
for ARGRA.
We are looking at all sorts
of options in Strathmore,
working with the Town and
businesses and we have had

great support from lots of
people there who certainly
outweigh some of the other
comments we have gotten.
We have a team of volunteers who are still catching
their breath from this years
amazing event all I can say
right now is stay tuned.
However, recent public
comments made by Baker,
especially through social
media, rubbed residents of
Strathmore the wrong way.
One upset resident in particular, Roadhouse Restaurant
and Lounge General Manager Belinda Derraugh, was
disappointed with the lack
of gratefulness the establishment received after sponsoring and supported the event.
I was totally upset with
what Jason Baker was saying, and a lot of it is not
even true, she said. To say
that people of Strathmore
didnt go because theyre
gay? I wouldnt speak for every single person of 13,000
but I would speak for a lot
of people to say they dont
care if theyre gay or not gay.
They cant blame us for their
numbers being down.
According to Derraugh,
neither the Roadhouse Restaurant and Lounge nor
the Strathmore Station Restaurant and Pub noticed
a difference in patronage,
particularly those wearing

LETHBRIDGE TOUR
The Strathmore Country Garden Club was touring Lethbridge on May 30th.
There were more of us this time (group of six). The group had a wonderful time touring Lethbridges: Japanese Gardens, 100year old tree, and two
greenhouses in the area.
The Garden club finished their wrap-up party over at Susan Wrigleys Farm
to make Flower Towers was our project in June. I will include photos of how
they turned out next month. The club has decided to take some time out for
July and August, as we are helping out with The Strathmore 55+ Games.
We will be back to meet on Wednesday, September 2nd, at the Strathmore
Public Library at 7pm - 9pm.
Hope everyones planting is going well! I found a garden tip on Pinterest - if
you spread coffee grounds around your flowers and veggies they are suppose to grow faster, and flowers in and around your rows will bring pollinators as well. Happy planting, growing and a happy harvest!

the rodeo weekend.
Upon being approached by the association, the restaurant donated $500,
which Derraugh said wasnt followed
up with acknowledgement or a thank
you. And while she disagrees with comments made by local politicians that the
event brings in thousands of dollars
to local businesses, the Strathmore &
District Agricultural Society has seen a
spike in camping lot sales to 206 this
year from last year.
From our perspective ARGRA are
very good clients and theyre important
to us from a business perspective, they
respect our park and our facilities and
our assets and they are easy to work
with, said Herb McLane, general manager of the Strathmore & District Agricultural Society.
We are at the end of a contract and
we have had preliminary discussions
theyve indicated to us that they wish
to come back. The last we spoke that
was the direction we were headed
with them. Im looking forward to that,
and we would like to have them back,
theyre good for our business.
McLane said in speaking with staff
and community members, there
seemed to be an increase in rodeo-goers in comparison to last year, an opinion other businesses share. The Strathmore Travelodge noticed an increase
each year during the ARGRA weekend
compared to other weekends, but numbers didnt spike in comparison to previous years. However, hotel manager
for the franchise said having the event
in Strathmore does make a difference
on their business.
Although the concerts didnt attract
as many people as had been initially
anticipated, hundreds of people from
all over Canada, the United States, and
internationally made their way close to
the stage to see LeAnn Rimes live. The
music travelled to the surrounding areas, including Dwight Stanfords house,
the chief administrative officer for the
Town of Strathmore. Blown away by
the quality of the music and the organization of the event, Stanford hopes the
association remains in Strathmore for
the benefit of the town.
The music was absolutely phenomenal it was some of the best weve
ever had in Strathmore, he said. They
spent quite a bit of money at various
places in town so thats been good for
the town. They were hoping for more
people at the concerts, and for some
reason a lot of people didnt show up.
I personally hope they stay here, because its good for the town.
The Town of Strathmores regular
council meeting on July 22, contained
a delegation by ARGRA to discuss the
towns willingness to help support the
event and play an active role in the decision of the event remaining in Strathmore.

Rosebud celebrates third year

Rosebud Chamber Music Festival
(RCMF) brings back festival favorites
and introduces new performers for its
third season, July 27 to Aug. 2.
The festival kicks off July 27 with
a Reading Party, which Keith Hamm,
RCMF artistic director, calls the chamber music equivalent to jamming.
Musicians from the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Banff Centre and
Mount Royal University will join the
festival musicians to play their way
through a stack of unrehearsed music.
It really takes the music out of the
concert hall and puts it right in front of
you, Hamm said. And its a great way
to meet the musicians.
One of the festival musicians to
meet is Arnold Choi, a member of the
RCMF Ensemble, wholl again play his
300-year-old cello, on loan from the
Canada Council Musical Instrument
Bank and worth about $12 million.
Its kind of fun to see my little nieces
dancing to this (music from this cello),
Hamm said. I feel like only in Rosebud
would you see that.
The RCMF Ensemble also includes
Sheila Jaffe and Arnold Schwebel on
violin, Peter Longworth on piano,
and Hamm on viola. During the year,
Hamm, Jaffe and Schwebel perform
with the Canadian Opera Company.
Schwebel also just became concertmaster of the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra. Longworth is a faculty member
of the Glenn Gould School of Music in
Toronto and, Hamm says, is one of the
most in-demand pianists in Canada.
The festival moves to Rosebud
Church July 29, with a solo piano concert by John Stetch, whom Hamm calls
an amazing pianist and composer and

jazz musician.
Alberta-born Stetch, now based in
New York City, will focus on performing original music.
On July 30, Timothy Dawson, a bassist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, will perform with the RCMF Ensemble on the Canadian Badlands Passion
Play site in Drumheller. On July 31, the
Ensemble will perform at Three Hills
Arts Academy.
Back in Rosebud Church, the RCMF
Ensemble closes the festival with an
Aug. 2 concert.
Its been really fun to have some of
Canadas best musicians learn about
(the festival) and connect with us, and
say, hey, this is cool, and I want to
come to rural Alberta and play music
too, Hamm said.
Rosebud is such a beautiful place
and the people there have such an
open mind and interest in this music
and in all music, so theres something
really great about being able to share
this music that I love so much with the
Rosebud community.
Part of (what brings musicians back
every year) is the bonds that they form
with the local community. People in
Rosebud are so generous and open
to new people That hospitality has
made a big impression on the guests.
We spend all year in the city. In
the summer, we get to go and play
Beethoven in a cool little valley on the
prairie. Its pretty special.
Admission for the John Stetch concert
is pay-what-you-can. Tickets for all other events are $25 at rosebudtheatre.ca

that coverage.
One is your location. If its a high risk
territory, this may not be available to
you. The majority of Chestermere and
Langdon are NOT in this territory.
If you have a reverse slope driveway or
are within 100 m of moving water, you
are not eligible. For Chestermere, moving water means where the water enters
the lake, pond, etc.
There are more insurance companies
looking at providing this coverage in
the near future.
But flood coverage is not available.
Once you have reviewed your policy
and know what you are and are not
covered for, its time to search out options. Each insurance company has
their own specific set of guidelines,
rules, products, options and premiums.
An insurance broker is a great place to
start. They are able to help you sort out
what you currently have and provide
you with options from a variety of different companies. The broker can go
over whats important to you, costs to
cover those things and make recommendations about coverages you might
like to see.
You can also look at precautions you can
take to protect yourself. Make sure you
have a back water valve to stop the flow
of sewer coming back into your home.
Consider a battery backup or generator
backup on your sump pump. Look at
adding a water alarm. These things can
result in additional discounts on your
home insurance.
Nothing diminishes anxiety faster than

Strathmore teen competes for the title of queen

Three young hopefuls are vying for
a chance to secure the title of queen in
the Strathmore Stampede Royalty program, with sights set on representing
the town at the Canadian Finals Rodeo.
Eighteen-year-old Shayla Gerencer,
from Strathmore, competed against
two Calgary competitors, Jessica Craig
and Jessica Pinkey, in the Horsemanship Challenge on July 18 and put her
best food forward at a talent show on
July 23.
Gerencer, the youngest participant,
began horseback riding at age three,
and has participated in everything
from barrel racing, to roping, jumping,
and trick riding. The recent graduate,
who plans to attend Lethbridge University to pursue a degree in sciences,
had been interested in competing for
several years. When the opportunity

was posted around town, she leapt at
the chance.
I think it would honestly be an
honour to represent Strathmore, Gerencer said.

lived here my entire
life, I know the area,
I know everybody,
and its home to me.
Representing it in
the rodeo would be
one step above that,
because I love to rodeo and it would just
be awesome to represent Strathmore that way.
Strathmore hasnt held the program,
also known as the Strathmore Rodeo Queen Competition, since 2000.
With Becca Walters appointed to fill
the void in 2012 and currently still in
possession of the title, the Strathmore
Stampede Royalty Committee decided

to resurrect the competition.
Were very impressed with them,
said Judi Wilson, chair of the committee, in regards to the Horsemanship Competition.
The judges were
really impressed
with the girls, and
of course thats
only one part of
the competition.
The three women will be judged
at the Horsemanship Competition,
fashion show, public speaking, and appreciation banquet. They are also required to participate in personal interviews with the committee.
The public speaking aspect of the
competition will commence on July 25
in the Chuck Mercer room at 10 a.m.

For Kristen Moncks, participating in
one of volleyballs biggest events at the
Federation International Sports University (FISU) games earlier this month in
Korea is a memory that she will never
forget.
It was a dream come true for the
young volleyball player, who competed
on the international stage and was exposed to a whole new level of volleyball.
Team Canada beat the likes of Thailand and Zimbabwe, but lost to Turkey
where they placed second in their pool.
They drew Russia in the quarterfinals
resulting in a loss, and drew China in
the last game where they lost the fifth
place game and settled for sixth place.
It was one of the best finishes that
Canada has done for women in this
tournament, said Moncks. I felt like

I learned stuff over there and (it was)
probably the best volleyball Ive played.
We played Russia in the quarterfinal
and they averaged 64 and won the
tournament and killed every team. But
it was crazy to play them. These girls
towering over you and trying to compete with that, our coaches made us
believe that we could.
After facing a variety of different
teams, Moncks added that she played
a focused game and helped her teammates out as much as she could.
Instead of playing for myself, I was
being able to lead my team and play for
the girls beside me rather than getting
in my own head, said Moncks.
Being housed in the village was a
memorable experience, as she felt very
welcomed by a Korean culture that was
very supportive.
So happy to help you and at the
games even if a Korean team wasnt

playing, theyd pick a team to cheer
for, said Moncks. The gym was always loud and always people cheering
for you.
Moncks former Trinity Western University and Team Canada assistant
coach Ryan Hofer thought she found
her rhythm as the tournament went on,
despite a slow start.
She struggled to pass, she struggled
to find her rhythm, said Hofer. Then
some things starting clicking for her.
She was starting to figure out some
serves, figuring out how to pass the
ball and Id say for the majority of the
tournament she was very strong for us.
Hofer admired how well Moncks
dealt with the bigger, more physical
teams and said this will bode well for
her future ambitions in the sport.
It really kind of confirmed that she
has a future internationally, he said.

The Strathmore Soccer Federation was able to overcome their
short benches this year, after seeing an influx of team members this
season.
President Mark Shorhen was
pleased with how the players responded to the shortage situation.
Biggest thing was the progression of each one of the teams, said
Shorhen. Theyre always playing at the bare minimum players.
They were very successful and they
came along quite well.
With a short bench players tend
to get tired faster, but Shorhen
credited the coaches for keeping
the players stamina up.
Shorhens priority this off-season
will be to start a new league for
next year and has already had interest from places like Beiseker, Irricana, Chestermere and recently
Standard.
Well have full control over how
the league is run, that would be a
new chapter, said Shorhen.
There were quite a few coaches
from the area who played soccer
in Strathmore in the past and have
come back to coach teams, and
Shorhen is hoping that it will be
a continuing trend for seasons to
come.
Most of the coaches have played
a higher calibre of soccer and he
thinks its a great thing for the players and the parents.
I think that really helps with the
parents that they see that theyre
kind of getting their moneys worth
out of the sport, and its not just
Joe Blow trying to play soccer and
trying to run it, said Shorhen.
He added that it has been good
having the coaching help, as he
now has the luxury to sit back on
the bench and watch the game
with both of his kids.

The Strathmore Reds bantam double
A baseball club is optimistic they will
carry over their team-first approach
and turn it into success at the upcoming provincials in Lacombe over the
August long weekend.
Theyve done very well as a team,
said manager Susan Biskup. All players seem to get along very well. We
only have four that are second-year
and all the rest are first-year bantam.
Since winning peewee silver a couple of years ago, the players have
bonded well together and are aware of
what theyll be up against.
I think that theyre a little bit ner-
vous going in, said Biskup. Theyre

going up against some pretty athletic
kids playing in there. I would say they
are definitely in their calibre.
Biskup added that each player
knows what to expect out of each other and if they play to their strengths,
they should do well.
Pretty much every kid on that team
can pitch, said Biskup. So thats our
biggest (strength), with eight teams in
the division, having to pitch every kid
almost as if were going into to the final.
The Reds will compete against Fort
McMurray, Grande Prairie, Spruce
Grove, St. Albert, Lacombe, Red Deer
and Camrose from July 31 to Aug. 2.

Chaos Volleyball hosting summer camp

The Strathmore Chaos club volleyball organization is hosting an inaugural summer camp for the
U13, U14, and U15 level girl players to improve
their skills and overall knowledge of the game.
The purpose is to work on their basic skills, to
work on different systems that these girls would
be using in the school volleyball as well as in club
volleyball, said Krista Hill, Chaos board member.
Hill added that the camp offers an opportunity
for players of all skill levels and provides an opportunity for the athletes to develop their abilities.
We want to get some of the kids out that are
going into the junior high volleyball, said Hill. A
lot of those may have never touched a ball. This is
going to be an opportunity for them to get some
time with the volleyball before going into tryouts.
The camp sets out to condition the girls, and for
some of them, earn an invite to the Chaos main

camp in the fall.
The organization wants to keep their U13 development league, which is a base-level volleyball
league for those who are new to the sport and
want to gain more knowledge in it.
We think its important to have that base level
and give them that experience, said Hill.
Mikayla Reinhardt, head coach of the camp,
wants to teach the girls proper technique and help
them become better players.
I want to focus on the foundational skills, said
Reinhardt. Just making sure their form is really
good, their communication and understandings of
the system. That way when they move up, they
have a solid foundation and coaches can add their
own.
The fifth-year Briercrest Clipper player said the
focus will be placed on basic skill with the younger group, while training with the older group will

home, the Strathmore Community Football Association is going back to their
old stomping grounds come fall.
The teams will kick off their season at

President Carl Seafoot thought this
was a positive step forward for both the
association and the school.
I sat down with Ivan Wright and Colin Lenox and continued conversations
with them through the time frame, said
Seafoot. They put me in talk with the
Golden Hills facilities guys, just through
the amount of construction theyre doing back there and it was good talking and made sure everybody is on the
same page. We came in and said hey,
were willing to do what we did before,
and were looking to come in and enhance the facility and not be a bad tenant.
Seafoot added the associations
schedule should not interfere with the
schools activities, as the teams will be
playing after hours on the field.
Now that the football association has
full control of the maintenance, the first
job to take care of is installing a scoreboard.
Peewee head coach Clinton Bean is
pleased to finally have a home for the
teams and said it will be a great way for
the junior high school kids to represent
their school.
I think it will be beneficial

for both parties, said Bean.
The majority of the kids are
going to the junior high. I
think theyll have a sense of
ownership because its their
school, but moving forward,
hopefully its somewhere we
can call our home.

Children often have
elaborate bedtime routines. After donning their

God had not abandoned
them and was inviting
them to participate in
the restoration of Israels
fortunes. God had come
to them, inviting them to
quench their thirst and
give them longed-for rest.
Things really dont change
that much. We are still a
thirsty people thirsty
for hope, for meaning, for
peace in an ever changing
world. God, who is the
same yesterday, today and
tomorrow, still invites us to
come again to Gods living
waters. May you accept
the invitation; yes God,
quench my thirst such that
I, with all your people, find
hope, find meaning, find
peace. Thank you that with
you we find love and rest
for our souls.

Mosquito Reds prepare for provincials

After recently scoring their first league
win in Carseland, the Strathmore Reds
Mosquito 2 baseball team received a
positive boost going into provincials in
Fort Saskatchewan this weekend.
The young team beat Fort Saskatchewan 21-14 on July 11 momentum
head coach Alana Aldridge hopes the
team will ride into provincials.
In mosquito, its all about pitching,
said head coach Alan Aldridge. Our
pitchers are throwing strikes. I dont
care if the other team hit against us, we
just cant walk a whole lot of people.
Our fielding is the strength of our team
if we can get them to hit the ball we
have a good chance of getting outs.
This is the first year of competitive
baseball for many players, but considering that the players have encountered
many of the same teams all year round,
Aldridge does not foresee his team having any problems at provincials.
Their Achilles heel, all season long,
was giving up runs at critical times, an
issue that needs to be corrected before
the tournament begins.
Our biggest problem, is we have
usually that one big inning that the other team gets and it really hurts us, said
Aldridge.
In the provincial round, theres no
limit innings that the other team can
score. We just need to stay consistent.
Every team is going to get runs, we just
dont need that eight-run inning against
us and well be fine.
Meanwhile, the Red Mosquito 1 team
has seen a reverse trend this season, going from a strong offense and defense
and weak pitching, to strong pitching
and a weak offence and defense, officials said.
To be honest its been a struggle,
said head coach Jeffery Stender. Our
pitching has been good enough to allow us to win games but our defense
has been our weakness. I think we
have the potential, if we actually put a
full six-inning game together to beat
them.
Stender added his team will have to
focus on their hitting in order to find
success on the provincial stage.
The Reds Mosquito 1 will head to
Wetaskiwin on July 31 to Aug. 2, while
the Reds Mosquito 2 team will be heading to provincials at Fort Saskatchewan
on July 24-26.
Were all pretty equal now, Baseball
Alberta has been fair with all the tiering, said Aldridge. I think we have a
good chance at winning provincials.

death of Oma who passed away peacefully on

at the age of 87 years. She is survived by two
daughters, Maria and Johanna (Brian) and one son
Francis (Lynn); thirteen grandchildren; twenty-six
great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her
husband Andrew in 2003, son Chris in 2011,and
infant grandson Daniel in 1986. Funeral Mass
will be celebrated on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at

where the original rodeo was held.
This rodeo started in 1959, and
was held annually at this location until 1966, when it was moved to the
south end of Kinsman Park, close to
where the water park is now located.
In 1967, to celebrate the 100th birthday of Canada, there was a Centennial
Horse Ride from Medicine Hat to Calgary. When they reached Strathmore,
they participated in a Centennial Rodeo.
In 1976, the rodeo name changed
to Whooper-up Days and moved to
The Strathmore & District Agricultural
Society Grounds. However, the City
of Lethbridge complained, because
they already had an event called Fort
Whoop Up Days which takes place
annually the third week of August.
In 1994, the name changed to
Strathmore Heritage Days Rodeo, and
is now known as the Strathmore Stampede. Hard work by hundreds of volunteers has made this the third largest
rodeo in Canada, featuring a professional rodeo, chuckwagon races and
the Running With the Bulls.

The origin of the Strathmore Stampede

The first-ever Strathmore Stampede
was held on July 19, 1921, which coincided with the opening of the Great
War Memorial Hall. This became an
annual event until 1929, when it ended mainly due to the Depression, but
also because the Memorial Hall construction loan had been repaid.
In the 1950s, cowboys from across
Canada and the northern states of the
U.S. travelled great distances to attend
and participate at the Calgary Stampede, which at that time always started the first Monday of July.
A couple of prominent ranchers,
Jack and Maggie Hartell, decided
Cheadle and area needed something
to help celebrate what is now known
as Canada Day on July 1.
This led to the July 1st Rodeo being held on their ranch, which was
located beside what is now the Fuel
Automotive Accessories building 6
km west of Strathmore. Surrounding
farms provided livestock, and events
included calf roping, barrel racing,
pole bending, etc. Im told that the
