Optics - Virtual Vs Real Image - Physics Stack Exchange PDF

A virtual image occurs when an object is placed less than the focal length from a lens. Light rays from the object diverge after passing through the lens, and the image location cannot be projected onto a screen. A real image forms when an object is placed further than the focal length from a lens. Light rays from the object converge at the image location, allowing the image to be projected onto a screen and seen by multiple observers. The key difference is that light rays actually intersect at the location of a real image, whereas they only appear to originate from the location of a virtual image after diverging through the lens.
