Pointing devices
Mouse:
- Analog or digital device?
- Mouse types:
o Mechanical mouse
o Optical mouse (laser or optical sensors)
typically more precise and easier to keep it clean
o Cordless mouse
- How does it work?
- Basic mouse operations:
o Point, Click, Drag, Zoom!
- Mouse for left-handed people! (10 % of people are left-handed)
- A little history:
o Invented in 1968 funded by NASA and Defense Dep.
o Redesigned 10 years later
o Used in Apple Computer in 1980
o Mother of all other pointing devices!
Trackball:
Like a mechanical mouse but the ball is on the top
Touchpad:
o Also called Trackpad; functions like a mouse
o Typically used in notebook computers
o A flat pad sensitive to pressure or conductive materials
o So how does it work?

Wireless inputs:
- Biometric technology
o Authenticating identity by verifying personal characteristics
o Biometric devices translate personal characteristics into digital
information
o Examples: Finger prints, Hand geometry, Iris pattern in your eyes,
voice recognition
o In 2003, over 1 billion dollars in sale!
- Allows interfacing with computers through natural gestures Hot
research area!
- Much of this technology is used for security
o
- Can be used for games or people with disabilities
- Examples: Gesture Recognition (Cam2Pan), Computer implant devices
o Reading sign language
o Track your eyes
o Tracking your thoughts with implanted devices??? WOW!
