Homework Assignment # 1

1) A single phase load operates at 20 kW, 0.8 pf lagging. The load voltage is 220 0 V rms at 60Hz.
The impedance of the line is 0.09+j0.3 . Determine the voltage and power factor at the input
(source) to the line ( ,
).

Circuit for Problem 1)

Solution:
Apparent power S consumed by the load is:
=

cos

20,000
= 25,000
0.8

Therefore, at the load, complex power is:

= 25,000 = 25,000 cos
Since

= & ' , the load current is:

= 25,00036.87 = 20,000 + #15,000

25,00036.87
' =)
* = 113.64 36.87
2200

The complex power losses in the line are:

-./

= 0 1 2-./ = 3113.6441 30.09 + #0.34 = 1162.26 + #3874.21

The complex power at source (generator) is:

=

-./

= 21,162.26 + #18,874.21 = 28,356.2541.73

Hence, the generator voltage is:

=

28,356.25
= 249.53 789
113.64

The generator power factor is:

cos341.734 = 0.75 :;<<=><
2) A balanced three-phase system has a load consisting of a balanced wye in parallel with balanced
delta. The impedance per phase for the wye is 10+j6 and for the delta 24+j9 . The source is
balanced delta and ?@ = 208 30 V rms. If the line impedance is per phase is 1+j0.5 , determine
line currents (0?A , 0@B , 0 C ), the load phase voltages when the delta load is converted to an
equivalent wye ( AD , BD , CD 4, and the currents in the delta connected load (0AB , 0BC , 0CA )

Problem 2): Per phase equivalent circuit

Solution:
Converting Delta load to equivalent Wye load, we obtain:
2E = F 2G = 8 + #3
The per phase circuit is shown in diagram above. Since the voltage at the source is:
&?@ = 20830
The phase voltage at the source is:
&?/ =

208
3

0 = 1200

The equivalent load impedance is:

2-

The line current '? is then:

?I

310 + #64 38 + #34

2E 2E1
=
2E + 2E1 310 + #64 + 38 + #34

= 4.9524.95 = 4.49 + #2.09

'? =
=

The phase voltage at the load is then

=|

&KL
2MNLO + 2P

1200
1 + #0.5 + 4.49 + #2.09

= 19.7725.26 A rms

AD | ,

where:

&AD = '? 2E

= 319.7725.26 434.9524.95 4
= 97.860.31 V rms

Therefore, the line currents and load phase voltages are:

'?A = 19.7725.26 789 &AD = 97.860.31 789

'@B = 19.77145.26 789 &BD = 97.86120.31 789

'

= 19.77+94.74 789 &CD = 97.86+119.69 789

In order to determine the phase currents in the delta-connected load, the original circuit should be
revisited. Although the wye-connected load, with which we replaced the delta-connected load, is
equivalent at the external terminals, we must use the original circuit to determine internal voltages or
currents. Since:

Then:

&AD = 97.860.31 789

&AB = 3 97.86 0.31 + 30
= 169.5 29.69 V rms

Hence,
'AB =

&AB 169.5 29.69

=
2
24 + #9

= 6.619.13 A rms
The remaining phase currents in the delta are:
'BC =

&ST
2

= 6.61 110.87 A rms

'CA =

&TU
2

= 6.61 +129.13 A rms

3) A balanced three-phase source serves three loads as follows:

Load 1: 24 kW at 0.6 pf lagging
Load 2: 10 kW at unity power factor
Load 3: 12 kVA at 0.8 pf leading
The line voltage at the loads is 208 V rms at 60 Hz. The line impedance is 2-./ = 0.05 +
#0.02 . Determine:
a) The line current (0 )
b) The combined factor of the loads ( - ?I )
c) The line voltage and power factor at the source (
,
4.
Solution:
The total load is:

= 24,000 + #32,000
= 10.000 + #0
F = 12,000 36.9 = 9,600 #7,200
1

Therefore:

= 43,600 + #24,800
= 50,16029.63

0 =

50,160
3208

= 139.23

The combined power factor for all three loads is:

- ?I

= cos 29.63 = 0.869 :;<<=><

The complex three phase power absorbed by line impedance is:

-./

= 33V-./ 0 1 + #W-./ 0 1 4
= 2908 + #1163VA

The complex power delivered by the source is:

=

-./

= 43,600 + #24,800 + 2,908 + #1,162

= 53,26429.17

The line voltage at the source is:

| XYZ[\] |
F^_

= 220.87 Vrms

And the power factor at the source is:

= cos 29.17` = 0.873 :;<<=><
