SCHOOL GIRLS WATCHING PORN: NEED

MORE PARENTAL CARE AND SUPERVISION
7 girl students were caught watching porn in the classroom and were suspended in a private school in
Idayarpalayam, Coimbatore. This revelation had shocked and agonized me. Where is Tamil Nadu
heading?
Our culture has taught us Guru is God and School is Temple and we call schools as temples of
knowledge. It is piercing my heart to hear news about boys drinking in the class room and girls watching
pornography. We should not be complacent these are rare events happening here and there.
The degradation of students started with commercialization of education. The relationship between
the teachers and students were once like the relationship between parents and children. Those were
the times when conduct and character were given priority over education. Teachers cared for the
welfare of the students. They were empowered to guide them and discipline them. These morals
have now taken back stage and with commercialization of education the student-teacher relationship
had become a buyer-seller relationship. Modern teachers are contracted to teach and they have to
just teach. They cannot go beyond this job. The rare teacher who cross this line to advice or guide
were even attacked by unruly mobs.
The resultant freedom had created opportunities for students to stray boundary lines into dangerous
territories. It is the combination of this uncontrolled freedom and the limitless access to the darkest
areas of the world through internet now available in modern cell phones that had resulted in the
Coimbatore incidence. The unrepentant attitude of the girls caught who watched porn and their
arrogance to threaten the teacher who warned themare endorsements to the degradation of the
education system. These students are not even studying higher grade they are students of 7 th
standard. The parents and students should understand that if a child entering teen age chooses the
wrong path it will ultimately end in disaster and should have every safeguard against filth.
Since cellphones are the major communication device used by youngsters to access these notorious
sites, parents should ensure that their wards do not get their hands on them. Schools and other

educational institutions should strictly enforce the ban on the use of cellphones in their premises.
School going children should be checked for hidden cellphones with due understanding of the
sensitivities of such checks. Teachers, parents and the department of education should work together
to eliminate the cellphone menace.
Parents have greater role in preventing youth from deviating in their pursuit of life. Teachers alone
cannot be blamed for the wrongdoing of students. Parents, who spend more time with them should
dedicate time and effort to teach them morals, caution them of bad and protect them from dirt and
smut. Moral education should be incorporated in school curriculum. Students should not be treated
as mark getting machines but should be groomed to become good humans by adding moral education
books as non-detail study along with language studies and even examinations may be conducted on
these subjects.
Science and technology had not only made life better and easier but also have brought many tempting
dangers along with these developments. It is the duty of teachers and parents to protect their young
children by educating them and cautioning them of the dangers of these fatal attractions.

Yours,

(Dr. S.Ramadoss)
