Workshop On "Recent Research in Medical Signal and Image Processing"

This document announces a workshop on recent research in medical signal and image processing. The workshop will bring together practitioners from various fields like engineering, medicine, and healthcare to collaborate and translate ideas from basic research into clinical applications. It will focus on extracting information from biomedical signals using techniques like blind source separation and developing image processing algorithms for applications like malaria detection. The goals are to launch platforms for translational science and bioengineering industry clusters, as well as produce a handbook on bioengineering. The workshop aims to benefit participants, institutions, and faculty interested in sponsored research funding and developing affordable medical devices.

Workshop on "Recent research in medical signal and image

processing"
Increasing healthcare costs are forcing healthcare practitioners to transition to proactive
screening of diseases. Healthcare delivery can be augmented and improved by leveraging the
advances in interdisciplinary engineering practice to develop affordable and innovative medical
and healthcare devices.
Biomedical Signal Processing
We aim at extracting useful information from biomedical signals (e.g. EEG, ECG) by means of
various signal processing techniques such as blind source separation, wavelets transform, support
vector machine, Principal Component Analysis.
Biomedical Image Processing
We develop image processing algorithm as image segmentation, feature extraction and
classification for biomedical applications. The ongoing project is an image-based Malaria
detection system where we utilizes image processing algorithms to detect the infected red blood
cells in thin blood smears. The images of blood cells are analyzed based on the shape, color and
other characteristics to identify Plasmodium species.
This Workshop is unique in that it seeks to bring eminent practitioners from Doctors,
professors from Engineering Institutions and collaborate with students from engineering,
medical and science disciplines; researchers; medical practitioners; entrepreneurs; hospital
management and research management professionals to communicate across disciplines
and move an idea, all the way from basic research to a clinical application. Indian experts
will share their knowledge in building devices that work in low-resource environments with their
counterparts from abroad to facilitate building affordable medical devices across the globe.
It is envisaged that the collaborative platform will provide infrastructure support to facilitate
translational research, promote the training and career development of translational researchers,
and develop innovative methods and technologies to strengthen translational research. The
organizers visualize a situation where regional platforms will integrate to form a national
consortium, which shares a common vision of improving human health by transforming the
research and training environments for clinical and translational science.

Outcomes

The following outcomes are envisaged:

Launch of the Translational Science Platform for Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering

Launch of the Industry Cluster for Bioengineering

Release of the Monograph Titled: Handbook of Bioengineering and Biomedical Applications

Benefits for Participants

Participants will develop an appreciation of the R&D ecosystem in India for biomedical devices

Participating Institutions will get an opportunity to showcase their expertise to Sponsored Research
Funding Organizations
