Key processes to be followed

Before working on a chain saw, ensure that ignition switch is set to off,
and remove the ignition lead from the spark plug.
Inspect all bolts, nuts and screws retighten or replace as necessary.
Clean air and fuel filters. Check muffler spark arrestor screen (if fitted).
Rotate chain bar daily, remove any burrs. Ensure that sprocket nose runs
freely. Inspect chain for any tight spots or broken or missing teeth, etc.
Check operation of chain brake it should snap on readily when pushed.
Fill fuel tank with correct mixture of fuel. Use funnel or pourer to prevent
spillage of fuel. Fill chain oiler tank with chain oil. (Note units are
generally designed so that both tanks run out at the same time).
Refer to manufacturers instructions for specific starting procedures.
Place chain saw on clear space on ground, hold saw firmly on ground, hold
handle, and use quick, sharp pulling motion on starter cord to start saw.
When saw starts, allow to warm up before commencing to cut. Saw should
idle without the chain rotating. If chain rotates when idling, shut saw off
and adjust idle according to manufacturers instructions.
Avoid drop starting unless trained and authorised to do so.
Maintain well-balanced stance, always cut with saw facing away from body.
Saw will generate large quantity of sawdust and wood chips.
Chain saws generate noise levels generally above the safe exposure limit.
Head protection is recommended to protect against falling limbs, and to
protect against kickback should the nose of the bar be flung up by contact.
Many severe injuries have occurred with operators being struck by the saw
whilst in use. The use of leg protectors or Kevlar trousers should be
considered for operators using chain saws on a full time basis.
Chain saws will generate high vibration levels, and cut timber presents a
high risk of cuts and splinters.
Allow machine to cool before refuelling. Avoid spilling fuel use funnel.

Precautions / PPE required

Wear leather gloves when

handling rough or sharp parts.
Wear eye protection when
cleaning, sharpening or testing.
No smoking or ignition sources
when refuelling or in vicinity of
fuel storage.
Ensure good footing when
starting.
Ensure area is clear of
obstructions.
Always keep fire extinguisher in
close proximity (if possible).
Wear Type 1 foot protection.
Wear eye protection.
Wear hearing protection.
Wear safety helmet or cap.
Face shield recommended.

4. General precautions

Identified hazards in task

Risk to other persons
Loss of control
Falling objects

Injury

Key processes to be followed

Keep all other persons clear of cutting area, use warning signs and barricade
area to prevent unauthorised entry.
Plan the task. Work out the sequence of cuts to achieve the desired result.
When pruning, do not cut any higher than shoulder height to prevent loss of
control of the saw.
When felling trees, plan which way the tree is to fall, and ensure that the
area is clear. Check the tree for dead branches (widow makers).
Make sure that a clear route of escape is available from the cutting area. (Be
aware that a falling tree can jump back from the stump in some cases).
Never cut alone have an observer stationed nearby in a safe position to
warn of any dangers, and to render assistance if required.
Keep well-stocked first aid kit close to where the cutting is to be carried out.

Precautions / PPE required

No unauthorised entry to work
area.

Observer should have ability to

operate chain saw in needed.
