ndividuality has nothing to do with

surface appearance, although it


can be expressed externally, and
the external inevitably influences
how people first perceive you. But true
individuality is more about being in
tune with who you truly are, whether
youre expressing yourself physically,
mentally, or spiritually; individuality
arises from living without fear of what
others might think or say about you
and without being swayed by their
opinions, leaving you free to lead life
without caring about judgments made
by the outside world.
For as long as I can remember, I
have always felt different in my own
way. From when I was pretty young,
I felt a sense of alienation from the

rest of the world, and that feeling


made it so easy to feel disconnected
from other people. But eventually I
realized that individuality is not about
being alone; its about embracing the
characteristics that distinguish you
from others, while still maintaining a
sense of connection to the universe to
which we all belong. Where you come
from, what you look like, and what
your past holds do not define you as an
individualyou are what you make
yourself to be. Yet we all experience
joy, sadness, loss, fear, hope, and
anxiety, so in a sense we are ultimately
all the same. Practicing this way of
thinking made it so much easier for
me to see the world with compassion,
patience, and love, instead of with
criticism, judgment, and fear of things
I might not understand. This way of
thinking was something I picked up
on through various books Id been
reading, and I tried to practice it
each day.
In my early teens, I shaved the
sides of my head into a thick Wendy
O. Williamsinspired mohawk. My
haircut was a shock to my folks, and
as much as I never intended on scaring
them,
their
unwillingness
to
understand where these forms of selfexpression were coming from made it
hard for us as a family. Most people
in the suburban town where we lived
assumed I was rebelling or that there
were problems back at home. Some

at the High
Voltage Tattoo
family tree, it can be easily
traced back to the two
people whom I hired initially: Dennis Halbritter and
Adrian Gallegos. From
these first two the rest of
our existing crew branches
off. With the exception of
the few people who have
come and gone here and
there, the High Voltage
family has largely retained
its original members.
Dennis, the first person
to join me in this wild roller
coaster of a shop, and Adrian
are both very close to my
heart. Not only are these
guys well-respected, established tattooers, but they
believed in me and my vision
for High Voltage Tattoo
before anyone else did.
The first time I heard
about Adrian, I was nineteen.
Without knowing very
much about him as a person
or even having any idea what
he looked like, I formed an
opinion of him based solely
on the array of beautiful
tattoos that he had done on
the clients who had circu-

lated through the shop where I worked. Before long, I was so


familiar with his style and unique approach that I could instantly
pick an Adrian Gallegos tattoo out of a lineup of hundreds:
delicate, immaculate line work created with finesse and solid but
flawless gradations of color. Most impressively, the composition
of Adrians tattoos could convey so much feeling and emotion. I
could tell that even the smallest butterfly tattoo had been
thoughtfully drawn by a creative mind.
From my perspective, the story of how Adrian and I finally
met is comical. Late one night, I went with a friend to the Pacific
Dining Cara restaurant downtown. It was upscale and famous
for being open late, and I would often see familiar faces there.
We enjoyed a great dinner, and as we made our way toward the
exit, we were stopped by a dashing gentleman with kind eyes and
a stylish scarf around his neck. Politely, he introduced himself.

Im Adrian.
Without knowing his last name, I already had an idea whose
hand I was shaking. I dont remember exactly what I said, but I
do remember gushing like a geeky fan.

ones now, so he wouldnt have any later regrets about his family
relationships. Even though his relationship with his mother is a
close one, that event brought her importance to him into sharper
focusand he made connecting with her a daily priority. Adrian
had always wanted to get a tattoo in his mothers honor, and
after she recovered from her illness, the idea of showing his love
for her in this way became even more important to him.

Adrian knows that he was lucky to get a second chance with


his mother. Every day since her recovery has been an opportunity
to tell her how much he loves her, and this tattoo serves as a
permanent way of expressing that.

ne of the most common


remarks I hear from people
when they see one of my
sketches or tattoos is: I wish
I could draw. Its flattering,
but a part of me cringes at that
comment simply because it isnt true
that they cant learn to draw. Theres
nothing special about what I do.
Technically speaking, anybody can do
what I do, maybe with the exception
of those who have certain physical
disabilities, and even then, there are
people who are able to draw, regardless
of physical challenges. Drawing well
only requires practice, devotion and
dedication, will and drive, and practice
and more practice.
Tests show that it takes the average
mind approximately ten thousand
hours of practice to achieve mastery
of somethingwhether in sports,

The simplest of tasks can become


a platform for creativity if you have
the right mind-set. Just because you
cant paint the Sistine Chapel like
Michelangelo or compose a symphony
like Beethoven does not mean that
the power of creativity cannot flow
through you. Some of the most
creatively inspired people Ive met
were far from accomplished artists.
They are bus-boys at bars, waiters
and waitresses, puppet-makers, and
mothers and fathers.
When you acknowledge that there
is a deeper sense of creativity inside of
you, you can become in tune with it.
And when you do that, you can bring
that awareness to everything you
doand a greater awareness to
everything you make. The result is
that whatever you do or make has a
