1.0 Introduction
Today computer is available in many offices and home and therefore there is a need to share
data and programs among various computers with the advancement of data communication
facilities. The communication between computers has increased and it thus it has extended the
power of computer beyond the computer room. Now a user sitting at one place can
communicate computers of any remote sites through communication channel. The aim of this
chapter is to introduce you the various aspects of computer network. A computer network is a
system of interconnected computers and peripheral devices. For example, it may connect
computers, printers, scanners, and cameras using hardware and software, these interconnected
computing devices can communication with each other through defined rules of data
communication.
2.0 Mobile computing
2.1 Definition
Mobile computing means using a computers devices while in transit. Mobile computing
implies wireless transmission, but wireless transmission does not necessarily imply mobile
computing. Fixed wireless application use satellites, radio system and lasers to transmit
between permanent object such as building and towers.

Its frequencies are up to 2Gnetwork GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and 3G network HSDPA
850/900/1900/2100.
3.0 Internet Technology and Services
3.1 VoIP
4
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a methodology and group of technologies for the
delivery of voice communication and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP)
networks, such as the Internet. Other terms commonly associated with VoIP are IP telephony,
Internet telephony, and broadband phone service.
3.2 BLOG
A blog is basically a type of website, like a forum or a social bookmarking site. As such it is
defined by the technical aspects and features around it, and not by content published inside it.
4.0 Types of network
4.1 PAN
5
A personal area network (PAN) is a computer network used for data transmission among
devices such as computers, telephone and personal digital assistants. PANs personal devides
themselves (intrapersonal communication), or for connecting to a higher level network and
the Internet (an uplink).
4.2 VPN
A virtual private networks (VPN) extends a private networks across a public networks, such
as the Internet. It enables a computer or network-enabled device to send and receive data
across shared or public networks as if it were directly connected to the private network, while
benefiting from the functionality, security and management policies of the public network. A
VPN is created by establishing a virtual point-to-point connection through the use of
dedicated
connections,
virtual
tunneling
protocols,
or
traffic
encryption.
Major
implementations of VPNs include openVPN and IPsec.
4.3 WLAN
6
A wireless local area network (WLAN) is a wireless computer network that links two or more
devices using a wireless distribution methon (often spread-spectrum or OFDM radio) within a
limited area such as a home, school, computer laboratory or office building. This gives users
the ability to move around within a local coverage area and still be connection to the wider
Internet.
4.4 WIMAX
WiMAX ( Worlswide Interperability for Microwave Access) is a wireless communications
standard designed to provide 30 to 40 megabit-per-second data rates, with the 2011 update
providing up to 1Gbit/s for fixed stations. The name "WiMAX" was created by the WiMAX
Forum, which was formed in june 2001 to promote conformity and interoperability of the
standard. The forum describes WiMAX as "a standard-based technology enabling the delivery
of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL.
5.0 CONCLUSION
Mobile computing (like the peer to peer transaction model did) brings about a new paradigm
of distributed computing in which communication may be achieved through wireless
7
networks and users can compute even as they relocate from one support environment to
another. The impact of mobile computing on systems design goes beyond the networking
level and directly effects data management. Although being a relatively new area, mobile data
management has attracted a lot of research efforts, motivated by both a great market potential
and by many challenging research problems.
