Principle of Operation of Transformer

The transformer uses electromagnetic induction to change one AC voltage to another. When the magnetic flux in one winding changes, it induces an emf in another winding according to Faraday's laws of induction. The changing flux is produced by an alternating current in the primary winding. This induces an alternating current in the secondary winding. The ratio of the number of turns in the primary and secondary windings determines the ratio of voltages. Energy losses occur in the transformer's windings and core due to I2R heating, hysteresis, and eddy currents. Laminating the core and using wire with low resistance reduces these losses.

Faradays First Law
Any change in the magnetic field of
a coil of wire will cause an emf to
be induced in the coil. This emf
induced is called induced emf and
if the conductor circuit is closed,
the current will
also
circulate
through
the
circuit
and
this current is
called
induced
current.
Faradays Second Law
It states that the magnitude of emf
induced in the coil is equal to the
rate of change of flux that linkages
with the coil. The flux linkage of the
coil is the product of number of
turns in the coil and flux associated
with the coil.

Say you have one winding


which is supplied by an alternating
electrical
source.
The
alternating current through
the
winding produces a continually
changing flux or alternating flux
that surrounds the winding. If any
other winding is brought nearer to
the previous one, obviously some
portion of this flux will link with the
second. As this flux is continually
changing in its amplitude and
direction, there must be a change
in flux linkage in the second
winding or coil. According to
Faradays law of electromagnetic
induction, there must be an EMF
induced in the second. If the circuit
of the later winding is closed, there
must be a current flowing through
it. This is the simplest form
of electrical power transformer and
this is the most basic of working
principle of transformer.
