(B) Prove by way of Mathematical Induction :

13+23+33+43+ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + n3 = [n2(n+1)2] / 4
11/2
Let P(n) = 13 + 23 +33 + +n3 = [n2(n + 1)2]/4
Basis:
For n = 1, P(1) = [12(1+1)2]/4 = 1. Therefore, P(n) is true for n = 1.
Inductive Step:
If P(n) is true, then P(n+1) is true.

For P(n+1):

The angle of elevation of a jet plane from a point A on the ground is 60 . After a
flight of 15 seconds, the angle of elevation changes to 30 . If the jet plane is f
flying at a constant height of 15003m, find the Speed of the jet plane.
5

Let x = distance travelled by the plane in t = 15 sec, then speed v = x/t = x/15

2/x + 3/y + 10/z = 4

System:
2/x + 3/y + 10/z = 4

(B)

A survey has been taken on methods of computer travel. Each respondent was
Asked to check BUS, TRAIN, or AUTOMOBILE as a major method of
traveling to work. More than one answer was permitted. The results reported
was as follows : BUS 30 people; TRAIN 35 people; AUTOMOBILE 100
people; BUS and TRAIN 15 people; BUS and AUTOMOBILE 15 people;
TRAIN and AUTOMOBILE 20 people; and all three methods 5 people.
How many people completed the survey form.
21/2

Using Venn Diagrams:

Bus

Train
5

10
10

5
15

70

Automobile

Solution:
a.

We start with the number of respondents using all three modes of travel = 5 and
place that in the intersection of the three circles

b.

The number of respondents using Bus and Train is 15 but 5 are already in the
Venn diagram. So we subtract 5 from 15 and place the result which is 10 and place
this in the intersection of the circles representing bus and train.

c.

Follow the same procedure in (b) for bus and automobile, and train and
automobile

d.

We then fill-up the circle representing Bus with the number of respondents using
Bus which is 30. But, there are already 10+10+5 or 25 people in the circle so only
5 will be added to complete the 30.

e.

Follow the same procedure in (d) for train and for automobile.

The number of respondents who completed the survey form (answered at least one mode of
transportation) is the total of all the numbers in the Venn Diagram which is
5+10+5+10+5+15+70 = 120.
