TheIdentityofThings(IDoT)isanareaofendeavorthatinvolvesassigning
uniqueidentifiers(UID)withassociatedmetadatatodevicesandobjects
(things),enablingthemtoconnectandcommunicateeffectivelywithother
entitiesovertheInternet.
ThemetadataassociatedwiththeUIDcollectivelydefinestheidentityofan
endpoint.IdentityofthingsisanessentialcomponentoftheInternetofThings
(IoT),inwhichalmostanythingimaginablecanbeaddressedandnetworkedfor
exchangeofdataonline.Inthiscontext,athingcanbeanyentityincluding
bothphysicalandlogicalobjectsthathasauniqueidentifierandtheabilityto
transferdataoveranetwork.
Addressabilitymakesitpossibleforthingstobetargetedandfound.Tobe
addressablefortheInternetofThings,anentitymustbegloballyuniquely
identifiable,whichmeansthatitmustbeassociatedwithsomethingtypically
analphanumericstringthatisnotassociatedwithanythingelse.
Tomakecommunicationamongthingseffectiveandsecure,however,it'scrucial
tomakemoreinformationabouttheiridentitiesavailabletootherthings.
FollowingaresomeoftheessentialconsiderationsforidentitiesofIoTthings:
Lifecycle:SomeIoTentitiescanhavequiteextensivelifespans.Anindividual's
electronicmedicalrecord(EMR),forexample,isalogicalobjectthatmaintains
itsidentitythroughtheperson'slife.Ontheotherhand,someotherentities
haveverybrieflifecycles.Aparcel,forexample,onlyexistsasanentityfromthe
timeitisshippeduntilthetimeitisreceived.

authenticatingIoTidentities.
