Thispageisintendedfortechnicalsupportprovidersandnetworkadministrators.Ifyou'renotoneofthose,
youshouldtalktoyourTSPornetadminbeforeproceeding.Theconceptbehindtheprocedureonthispageis
explainedonourmainKMSpage.
Thispagedescribeshowtomanuallyactivateproducts.Withthismethod,you'llneedtoruncommandson
eachmachineandforeachsoftwarepackageduringthe30daygraceperiodafterinstallation.Ifyouare
usingvirtualmachinesfortestingandcrosscompatibilityonMacintoshcomputers,you'llneedtousethe
manualmethodinthosecircumstances.
KMSactivationcanbeblockedbyafirewall.Pleasebesurethatanyfirewallsbetweentheclientmachine
andtheKMSserverareopentoincomingandoutgoingtrafficonTCPport1688.
Tousethismethod,firstinstallthesoftware(WindowsorMicrosoftOffice).Aspartofthatprocessyou'llbe
informedthatyouhave30daystoactivatetheproduct.Completethestepsbelowduringthat30dayperiod.
ThismethodassumesthatWindowsorOfficehasneverbeenactivatedonthismachinebefore.Ifyour
machinehadpreviouslybeenactivatedwiththeearlierMAKactivationmethod,pleaseinsteadfollowthe
instructionstoswitchfromMAKtoKMSactivation.

ActivateaWindowsOperatingSystem:Windows7,Windows8,Server2008,Server2008R2,or
Server2012:
1. OpenupanElevatedCommandPromptwindow.Forinstructions,pleaseseeourguide:HowToOpen
anElevatedCommandPrompt.
2. IntheelevatedCommandPromptwindow,verifythatthecurrentdirectoryisC:\Windows\System32.If
itisnot,type
CD\Windows\System32
andpressEnter.
3. Typethefollowingcommand:
cscriptslmgr.vbs/skmskms01.cit.cornell.edu
andpressEnter.
(Note:Theurlinthecommandabovebeginswithkayemmesszeroone.)
4. Typethefollowingcommand:
cscriptslmgr.vbs/ato

andpressEnter.
5. ClosetheCommandPromptwindow.
Andyou'redoneforthatinstallationofWindowsonthatcomputer.

ActivateMicrosoftOffice(2010or2013)
1. OpenanElevatedCommandPromptwindow.Forinstructions,pleaseseeourguideHowToOpenan
ElevatedCommandPrompt.
2. Typethefollowingcommand,dependingonyourversionofOffice:
Office2010:
CD\ProgramFiles\MicrosoftOffice\Office14
PressEnter.ThisassumesyouinstalledOfficeinthedefaultlocation.
Note:Ifyouinstalledthe32bitversionofOfficeona64bitsystem,usethiscommand
instead:
CD\ProgramFiles(x86)\MicrosoftOffice\Office14
Office2013:
CD\ProgramFiles\MicrosoftOffice\Office15
PressEnter.ThisassumesyouinstalledOfficeinthedefaultlocation.
Note:Ifyouinstalledthe32bitversionofOfficeona64bitsystem,usethiscommand
instead:
CD\ProgramFiles(x86)\MicrosoftOffice\Office15
3. Typethefollowingcommand:
cscriptospp.vbs/sethst:kms01.cit.cornell.edu
andpressEnter.(Note:Theurlinthecommandabovebeginswithkayemmesszeroone.)
4. Typethefollowingcommand:
cscriptospp.vbs/act
andpressEnter.
5. Closethecommandpromptwindow.
Andyou'redoneforthatinstallationofOfficeonthatcomputer.
