On the Railroad between Kjbenhavn and Roskilde
Melody for a poem by Hans Christian Andersen (1805 - 1875) composed by Iris Larsen (1944 - )
Set and arranged for the 10-piece brass ensemble format (4 trumpets - horn - 4 trombones - tuba) by Klaus
Bjerre during the period of 1998 through 2004.
During the winter of 1998 this arranger was asked to make an arrangement of Iris Larsens melody and accompanying
piano setting for a poem by H. C. Andersen. The format options were left open for quartet or smaller ensemble. The
1998 result was a setting for all members of the small concert band, which played a spring concert in the village church
on North-western Zealand, where Iris Larsen was the organist. Of course including Iris and her organ where H. C. Andersens text called for it.
The text tells of a bridal couple riding by train to their church wedding. H. C. Andersen was immensely fascinated by
the first Danish railroad, opened in 1847, from Copenhagen to Roskilde about 20 miles to the west. He describes the
ride in terms, which a few generations later were applied to the invention of the aeroplane.
The arrangement for the chosen format posed a few problems, as the piano setting could not be translated to wind and
brass in a fashion even remotely close. The solution was to take a look at the given factors:
I: a melody remarkably similar to the style of the folk tunes collected by the Danish composer A. P. Berggreen, a contemporary of H. C. Andersen (and represented in the YMBBb project on presenting Danish seasonal hymns). A strong
characteristic of this melody is the absence of the leading note.
II: the harmonic palette presented in Iris Larsens piano setting
The solution was to set the 4 verses differently employing period setting practises, among these the ones used for the
orchestral horn. And to represent Iris Larsens harmonic ideas in a more linear form discussing the chromatic representation of several steps of the basic F major scale especially in the 2nd and 4th verses,
This version for the 10-piece brass format is written with quite experienced players in mind. As a work-around of the
fixed instrumentation, the term quasi has been applied quite a few times to hint towards the instruments, which would
have been employed in a period setting. Trombones cannot act as horns, but they may put a temporary, and a restraining that is, nozzle on their testosterone outlets (this goes for players of several sexual permutations).
The upper brasses may find themselves underemployed, a fact they however will enjoy during long concerts. They
furthermore will resent my taking them to their lower limits, rangewise. But if they shall represent that mid-18th-
century touch, there is no workaround. They could have been set an octave up, but then there were not that many steam
locomotives during the baroque era.
A short presentation of the setting ideas applied:
Introduction and 1st verse: A horn quartet is contrasted with a male vocal soloist and his backing group. The text-based
railway bell has been written into the only brass part potentially offering a spare hand.
2nd verse: The male soloist exchanges musical statements with a number of fellows in the same range. The setting of
the original version had the arranger playing the melody on euphonium with two of his former students playing the present 2nd trombone and tuba parts on a small euphonium and an F-tuba respectively. Since then the present 3rd and bass
trombone parts have been added with euphoniums in mind. They certainly add essential musical information. But they
also make the setting dense and very difficult to perform. The omission of the bass trombone, and maybe also the 3rd
trombone, in this verse will be acceptable.
3 rd verse: a horn quintet accompanied by a cavalry type set-up is contrasted with a male soloist accompanied by a sugary French type romantic organ.
4 th verse and epilogue: an organ with all stops pulled, in a controlled fashion of course, is contrasted by the pure sound
of cylindrical brasses.
A set of substitute parts for Bb and Eb instruments, as found in the British brass band, has been added.
The usual Amen of the prefaces for the YMBBb offerings is sounded this way:
This arrangement can be used free of charge, but reports on readings and performances would be nice.
However this arrangement represents a different situation, because the composer fortunately still is alive:
Iris Larsen owns the melody. She kindly and forthcomingly has given this present arranger the rights to distribute his
several versions of his basic arrangement for free. As Iris Larsen is a member of the Danish equivalent of ASCAP,
named KODA, a short for Komponistrettigheder i Danmark, each and every performance shall be reported to ASCAP,
KODA, or their applicable national equivalent in accordance with the laws in the respective nation and/or state. Recordings shall be pre-approved in writing or in provable electronically communication with Iris Larsen as well as with
this present arranger, Klaus Bjerre.
