Coding Decoding

The document discusses coding and decoding tests. It explains that coding involves transmitting a message between a sender and receiver without a third party understanding it. The coding and decoding test judges a candidate's ability to decipher the rule used to code a word or message and then break the code to decipher the message. It provides examples of coding questions where letters in a word are replaced according to a rule. Candidates must detect the coding pattern or rule and answer questions accordingly.

Coding-Decoding

Coding-Decoding
A CODE is a system of signals. Therefore, Coding is a method of transmitting a message between the sender
and the receiver without a third person knowing it. The Coding and Decoding Test is set up to judge the
candidates ability to decipher the rule that codes a particular word/message and break the code to decipher
the message.

Type 1
In these questions, the letters in a word are replaced by certain other letter according to a specific rule to form
its code. The candidate is required to detect the coding pattern/rule and answer the questions accordingly.
Example
In a certain code, TEACHER is written as VGCEJGT. How is CHILDREN written in that code?
a. EJKNEGTP
b. EGKNFITP
c. EJKNFGTO
d. EJKNFTGP
e. None of These
Solution
Clearly, each letter in the word TEACHER is moved two steps forward to obtain corresponding letter of the
code. T V, E G, A C, C E, H J, E G, R T;
Similarly, we have C E, H J, I K, L N, D F, R T, E G, N P. So, the desired code is EJKNFTGP.
Hence, the answer is (d).

Example-2
In a certain code language, RUSTICATE written as QTTIDBSD. How would STATISTIC be written in that
code?
a. RSBUJTUHB
b. RSBUITUHB
c. RSBUIRSJD
d. TUBUITUMB

e. None of These
Solution
Clearly, the middle letter of the word remains unchanged in the code. Each of the first two and the last two
letters of the word is moved one step backward, while each of the remaining letters is moved one step
forward to obtain the corresponding letters of code.
R Q, U T, S T, T U, I I, C D, A B, T S, E D. Similarly, we have: S R, T S, A B, T U, I I,
S T, T U, I H, C B. So, the required code is RSBUITUHB. Hence, the answer is (b).

Example-3
In a certain code, BREAKTHROUGH is written as EAOUHRBRGRKT. How is DISTRIBUTION written in that
code?
a. TISTBUONDIRI
b. STTIBUONRIDI
c. STTIBUDIONRI
d. RISTTIBUDION
e. None of these
Solution
Let us divide the letters of the given word into pairs and label these pairs from 1 to 6.
BR(1) EA(2) KT(3) HR(4) OU(5) GH(6), Clearly, the code contains these pairs arranged in the order 2, 5, 4, 1,
6,
Dividing the letters of the word DISTRIBUTION in pairs, we have: DI(1), ST(2), RI(3), BU(4), TI(5), ON(6).
Arranging these in the order 2, 5, 4, 1, 6, 3, we get the required code i.e. STTIBUDIONRI. So, the answer is
(c).
