The aims of Built Environment and Urban Culture are to develop the
students awareness and understanding of built environment in the urban
context. Historical, cultural, social, economical and political issues in urban
development are addressed. The course explores the diversity of built
environment with a focus on the transformation of public space and urban life.
In addition, the course introduces the basic knowledge of understanding,
analyzing and designing of built environment with case studies and site tours in
order to educate the students about the problems, conflicts and possibilities of
built environment in Chinese cities under the challenge of globalization.

Upon completion of the subject, students will be able to:


(a) Understand the urban built environment from the historical perspective
(b) Understand the cultural, social, economical and
political issues in urban development
(c) Understand the typical patterns of traditional
Chinese built environment
(d) Understand the typical patterns of contemporary Chinese built
environment
(e) Understand the interaction between everyday life and built environment
and the principles of built environment design
(f) Aware of the key issues of contemporary Chinese urban development

To pass this subject, students are required to obtain Grade D or above in BOTH
the Continuous Assessment and Exam components.
The various methods are designed to ensure that all students taking this subject
Assignments will be given based on reading the recommended material
including lecture notes, textbooks, and journal articles.
Group project must be China-related ergonomics study to ensure the student
understand ergonomics issues related to Chinese.
Group project will be evaluated in oral presentation.
Group written report is required to understand the content of the course.
