Read the short selection below then locate the information asked for by
identifying the paragraph numbers that contains the information then giving the

Reading Text
Some historians call Archimedes the father of experimental Science because he was the
first to test his ideas by conducting experiments. Archimedes designed pulley system led to the
construction of machines that are capable of moving heavy loads easily. His discovery on a
better way to determine the value of pi (the ration of a circumference of a circle to its diameter)
made it possible to solve many problems involving the area of circles and the volume of
cylinders.
Archimedes was the first person to use method now used in Calculus.

He is also

credited with inventing the Archimedean screw. This is a device still used today to lift water for
irrigation.
Archimedes also invented machines that led to the defeat of enemy troops. One of
these was the catapult, a machine that shot rocks at the enemy. Another was a system, of
mirrors that concentrated the rays of the sun to set enemy ships on fire.
