The student conducted two titration experiments to determine concentrations of solutions. In experiment 1, iron (II) ammonium sulphate solution was titrated with potassium permanganate. In experiment 2, hydrogen peroxide was titrated with potassium permanganate. The student then calculated the concentrations of potassium permanganate to be 0.02 mol/L and hydrogen peroxide to be 0.473 mol/L. Proper technique was used including cleaning of glassware and collaboration between the student and their partner to complete the experiments.

Purpose:

The purpose was to determine the concentration of potassium

permanganate then find out the concentration of the hydrogen
peroxide.

Volumetric pipette is the most appropriate piece of glassware in

which to transfer the peroxide solution during the dilution.

Exactly 20.00 mL of hydrogen peroxide solution reacts with 9.46 mL

of potassium permanganate solution.
Both titrations were colorless so the endpoint of both titrations
showed the changing from colorless to light pink. However as a
result shown above the first experiment took long time to change
color, whereas the second one changed faster.

Collaboration:
My partner and I worked together in collaboratively way which led
us to greater effectiveness and efficiency. While I am preparing the
solution my partner was cleaning and washing the glassware we
used in this experiment. I was titrating while my partner reading the
volume and decide whether I slow down or go faster or stop. We were
helping each other of how accurate the color is.

Discussion:
Two critical step in the use of Pipette:
Step 1: the volumetric pipette was cleaned with distilled water and this to ensure that
there is no contamination in the pipette.

Step 2: the volumetric pipette was rinsed with the solution used to get rid of water
layer that sticking inside the pipette from step 1, so this to ensure that the solution was
not diluted.
Two critical step in the use of Burette:
Step1: the burette was cleaned with distilled water to remove any contamination on it.
Step2: the burette was rinsed with the (MnO4-) solution. This to ensure that there was
no layer from distilled water sticking inside the burette and also to ensure that the
solution (MnO4-) is not diluted when it was delivered to the council flask. In addition,
when reading the volume must be at eye level and the funnel must be removed to
ensure there were no drops coming down when titrating.

Systematic and random errors:

One of the random errors was the difficulty in reading the volume due to the dark
color of the potassium permanganate. This affects the final reading therefore the
results are not accurate
One of the systematic errors was incorrectly calibrated glassware due to the
manufacturing problem. Not all sizes of glassware are exactly the same, so this may
cause a difference in the amount of solution used and delivered.

Calculations:
8 H + M n O4 +5 Fe Mn+4 H 2 O+5 F e
2 Mn O 4 +6 H +5 H 2 O 2 2 M n+ 8 H 2 O+5 O2
Using the results, calculation the concentration of iron (II) ammonium sulphate,
potassium permanganate, and hence the undiluted hydrogen peroxide.
*First find the number of moles of

Fe

n( Fe =C V
= 0.100 0.02
= 0.002 mole
*Second use the mole ratio
M n O4 :5 Fe
1 : 5
n(MnO4) = 0.0004 mole ( this react with the Fe )
c(MnO4) =
=

n
v
0.0004
0.0196

= 0.02 mol. L1

Third find the number of mole of MnO4 that react with H2O2
n(MnO4) = C V
= 0.02 0.00946
= 0.0001892 mole
Use the mole ratio to find the number of mole of hydrogen peroxide
n(MnO4) : n(H2O2)
2
:
5
n(MnO4) = 0.0001892 2
= 0.0000946

2 Xn(H 2 O2) 0.000946

=
2
2
n(H2O2) = 0.000473 mole
Fourth, hence the undiluted hydrogen peroxide.
0.000473 in 20
(H2O2) in 200
(H2O2) = 0.00473
Then find the concentration of undiluted H2O2
C(H2O2)=
=

n
v
0.00473
0.01

= 0.473 mol. L1

Conclusion:
In conclusion, the aim was to find out the concentration of potassium
permanganate then find out the concentration of the hydrogen
peroxide. This has been done successfully. The concentration of
MnO4 was 0.02 mol.L and the concentration of H2O2 was 0.473
mol.L
