FYP LOGBOOK

INTRODUCTION
The FYP logbook is a combination of general guideline for the FYP and also a journal to
record all FYP activities throughout the two semesters. This book is an important
mechanism for the faculty/supervisor to evaluate students attitude and ability and also to
monitor the status of the students project throughout the semester.
Students are required to write clearly and honestly all activities performed and then to
summarize their work every week. This is essential since part of the final marks received
by the students on their FYP will be based on what they have recorded in this logbook.
Students are highly encouraged to maintain a separate file/folder to compile all their
findings/printouts/datasheets as a complement to this logbook.

A REMINDER TO STUDENTS
1.

This logbook must be presented to your supervisors to be evaluated and graded at

least ONCE EVERY TWO WEEKS.

2.

All activities conducted must be recorded at the activities section in the logbook.
Signatures of relevant persons can also be recorded as proof of your claim at the
activities section (optional but highly recommended).

3.

This logbook must be submitted to your supervisors along with your Project 1
Report to be graded by your supervisor at the required date (refer to Activities
Schedule).

4.

If the thesis draft or the final hardbound thesis is not presented by the student to
the faculty, the students final examination marks can be withheld by the faculty.

5.

A student can be given the failure grade by the Faculty if he/she was found not
able to achieve the minimum requirement of this subject (subject to approval or
suggestion by the supervisor).

GUIDELINES FOR SUPERVISOR AND STUDENTS

HOW TO CHOOSE A FINAL YEAR PROJECT TOPIC
1

Students are advised to find their own project topic and discuss the topic with
their supervisor. Besides, supervisor also can suggest the project topic to the
students if any.

A project shall have minimum ONE (1) input that can either be digital input or
analog input. Students should be able to identify and describe the input
characteristics of their project including input type, waveform (if any), magnitude,
frequency, etc.

A project shall have minimum TWO (2) outputs. The output might be a
combination of movement (kinematics), visual (LED, LCD, lamp, indicator etc.),
audio (speaker, buzzer, sound etc.)

A project shall utilize minimum ONE (1) microcontroller such as arduino, PIC,
Atmel or etc. The students are required to program the microcontroller according
to their assembly language or using C programming.

Students should be able to show the original project/source/circuit to the

supervisor and describe in details all the modification and improvement that they
intended to do. Supervisor must make sure that their students do the modification
and no plagiarism.

Students are required to perform circuit simulation to show the expected output of
the project. They can use any related software for circuit simulation.

Students are required to design and fabricate a Printed Circuit Board (PCB). All
the related components for the project shall be assembled and soldered on PCB.

the drafting of the report.
1.4

Paragraphs
Every paragraph should be indented. (0.5 inch) .A new paragraph at the

bottom of a page must have at least two full lines of text. If not, it should begin on
the next page. All paragraphs should be justified.

10

1.5

Spacing

The following guidelines should be observed:

i)

The spacing between the chapter number and the title and between the title
and the first line of a text should be (3) lines spacing.

ii)

The spacing between the last line of a text with the title of a subsection
should be (2) lines spacing.

iii)

The spacing between the subsection and the first line of a text should be
(1) lines spacing.

iv)

The spacing between paragraphs should be one (1) line spacing.

v)

The number and the title of a sub-section should be aligned with the left

vi)

The first line of paragraph should be indented by 0.5 inch (1.27 cm)
from the left margin.

vii)

A new paragraph should not begin on the last line of a page.

viii)

The spacing between the last line of a text and a table, or figure or an
illustration should be one (1) line spacing.

1.6

Preliminary Pages Pagination

All pages in the preliminary section such as Acknowledgements, Table of

Contents etc. should be numbered in consecutive lower case Roman numerals (i,
ii, iii, iv, etc.), except for the Title page which is suppressed. All pages of the main
text including the references or bibliography, appendices, tables and figures
should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, etc.).
Page numbers must not be punctuated, bracketed, hyphenated nor
accompanied by any decorative symbols and should be bottom centered. The
position of the page number must be consistent throughout the report. Each
appendix should be identified separately using a capital letter (Appendix A,
Appendix B, etc.) on the top center of the page. No separator pages are allowed
11

1.7

Tables
Each table caption must be centered at the top of the table (title case) and

should be no spacing between table and the caption. Table Heading should be as
shown below:
