SODERN CNA-CEMENT

Real time process

control for the
cement industry
The Sodern CNA-Cement is the fourth generation of the
worlds most advanced on-line elemental analyzer, based
on the PFTNA (Pulsed Fast and Thermal Neutron Activation)
technology. Cement plants will benefit from making the
most efficient use of the quarry, optimized stockpile quality,
and real time control of additives to the raw mix resulting
in lower additive usage and improved quality of the raw
mill output. In addition, cement plants can realize savings
associated with lower laboratory testing and labor costs,
tailoring the raw feed for grindability to reduce electricity
consumption, and providing the optimal chemistry to the kiln
to reduce fuel costs and extend refractory life.

Advantages of Sodern CNA-Cement

Unique and proven PFTNA technology for raw mix and
stockpile optimization
Uptime
Unmatched analytical stability delivered by constant
neutron flux from generator eliminates expensive and
inconvenient periodic on-site calibration
Modular design minimizes downtime during
installation
Ultimate safety Unlike radioactive isotope based
units which always emit neutrons, the Sodern CNAs
tube type neutron source can be switched off during
non-operation, routine maintenance or emergency and
enables installation of a unique Automated Radiation
Protection System (ARPS).
Flexibility in software solutions Full compatibility with
industry standards (FLS, Polysius, PSCL ABB, etc.)
Global support and expertise

SODERN CNA-CEMENT

Addressing the needs of the cement industry

Benefits of a cross-belt
analyzer in your process
Quarry Management
Installation of a Sodern CNA-Cement at the quarry makes it
possible to safely maximize the use of lower grade materials
(and conserve premium grade materials) by preblending
before the stockpile. This can significantly increase the
lifetime of the quarry.
Stockpile optimization
A Sodern CNA ahead of the stockpile ensures that pile quality
targets are met, the chemical variation is reduced, and
minimal correction is required upon reclaim.
Raw mix control
Using the Sodern CNA-Cement to monitor the raw mix
chemistry at one minute intervals allows for the immediate
correction of source proportioning ratios with no mill
transport delay. This results in the maximum possible
reduction in chemical variation of the kiln feed.
Cost saving opportunities
Replacing a sampling tower
Reducing laboratory cost and preparation labor
Improving grinding efficiency while reducing energy cost to
grind
Improving lifetime of kiln refractory
Reducing use of additives
Extending quarry life

Unique and proven PFTNA

principle
Using high energy neutrons
to determine the chemistry
of materials is very useful
for process control because
the analysis is done
instantaneously, allowing
many control changes
over short periods of time
to achieve the target
chemistry. The analysis is very
representative since all the
material on a belt from topto-bottom and side-to-side is
being analyzed.
Pulsed Fast Thermal Neutron
Activation (PFTNA) analysis
involves illuminating the
raw material with neutrons.
By measuring the energy of
each gamma ray induced by
the interaction of neutron
and nucleus of atoms, most
elements contained in the
raw material (such as silica,
calcium, alumina and iron)
are identified and quantified.

The primary analytical

advantage of PFTNA over
traditional Prompt Gamma
Neutron Activation Analysis
(PGNAA) is the ability to pulse
the neutrons used to excite
the sample. Pulsed excitation
produces a much higher
quality time resolved gamma
ray spectrum from the sample
with a drastically improved
signal to noise ratio. This
higher quality data results in
a more accurate and robust
analysis.

Stability
The Sodern CNAs comprehensive factory calibration is
guaranteed to be drift free. The rate of neutron generation
is fully controlled and never changes over the lifetime of
the tube, thus the same level of analytical performance
is maintained. This stability eliminates the need for the
laborious and expensive routine recalibrations that are
required with radioactive isotope-based systems.
Modular design
The Sodern CNAs modular design makes it easy to install and
service, guaranteeing that down time is kept to an absolute
minimum.

Safety
In addition, the electric
neutron source does
not present the kind of
hazardous waste issues
that are unavoidable with
radioactive isotope based
analyzers.

Improving safety by using an

electrical source is a major
benefit of PANalyticals
analyzers. As a small particle
accelerator made by Sodern
EADS, the pulsed neutron
generator is an ON/OFF
electric neutron source and
the basis of PFTNA analysis.

The lifetime of this source

can exceed 14,000 working
hours, making it the
longest lifetime tube of
any commercially available
neutron tube. The Sodern
sealed neutron tube has
evolved from 40 years of
experience in designing
and manufacturing neutron
generation products. Only
Sodern EADS is the worlds
leading supplier of neutron
tubes for a vast assortment
of industrial, defense
and security applications
worldwide.

Flexibility in software
solutions
CNA Control software is supported on both Microsoft
Windows XP and Windows 7 and is specifically designed for
cement applications. With the ability to examine current
and past analyses as well as analysis trends and estimated
compositions of a given batch or pile, the basic software can
be used for simple pile building or raw mix control. The data
collection software is also compatible with more sophisticated
pile building and raw mix control software from other
vendors.
