EE423 Power Systems Analysis Final Examination

The document provides instructions and information for a final exam on power systems analysis. It outlines the exam rules, including a requirement to sign a statement pledging no cheating. It also provides machine parameters and line details for two problems. Problem 1 asks students to determine the critical clearing angle and maximum stable reactive power for a generator, given damping coefficients. Problem 2 repeats this for a different damping coefficient intended to show damping effects more clearly.

FINAL EXAMINATION
EXAMINATION RULES
1. You are on your honor to do your own work on this examination. That is, you will
neither give nor receive aid on this examination, except from the course instructor. If
you violate this confidence, you will receive the grade of zero for this examination.
2. Do all your work on separate paper. Make it neat. No partial credit will be given, if I
can not easily follow your work. Show all of your work!
3. Attach a summary (maximum length of 4 pages) of all your answers to the front of your
work.
4. You have 64 hours to complete this examination from the time you first receive it. The
completed examination must be returned by January 5, 2005.
5. Please read following statement when you receive the examination and sign it when
you finish the examination:
I certify that I have neither given nor have I received any help
on this examination, except from the course instructor.

1. (50 pts) Given the information above and that

k = 0 kW sec2 /rad2 ;

damping coefficient:

(a) determine the critical clearing angle for the above conditions following a threephase fault that clears while the breakers are open, and
(b) set the clearing time to three-quarters of the critical clearing time. What is the
maximum value of Q that the machine can consume and still remaining stable
following a three-phase faults that clears while the breakers are open?
2. (50 pts) Given the information above and that
k = 180:3 kW sec2 /rad2 ;

damping coefficient:

This value of k is larger than would usually be found in practice. I have choosen it
large, so that the damping effects are easier to observe.
(a) determine the critical clearing angle for the above conditions following a threephase fault that clears while the breakers are open using a Simulink or Excel plot
of delta versus time,
(b) set the clearing time to three-quarters of the critical clearing time. What is the
maximum value of Q that the machine can consume and still remaining stable
following a three-phase faults that clears while the breakers are open?
