GeoModeller Help Tutorial Intro
GeoModeller Help Tutorial Intro
This book contains illustrated step by step instructions for a demonstration of basic
3D GeoModeller procedures. The demonstration uses sample 3D GeoModeller data
provided on the 3D GeoModeller download or CD-ROM. You can use the
demonstration as a first step in evaluating 3D GeoModeller or as introductory
training in its use.

Introduction
These Help pages will help you to learn how to use this manual.
It is assumed that you have a basic knowledge of geology, and you understand the
basics of geological maps, sections and boreholes, and are familiar with geological
terminology, such as formation, dip ... and all of the basic terms and procedures used
by geologists in standard geological mapping and interpretation.
The main functionalities of 3D GeoModeller are presented under the heading "Main
Functions - steps to use" with detailed how to instructions. For more information on
their use, refer to the linked documents under the heading See also, and also to the
context-sensitive on-line help which can be directly accessed from the relevant dialog
box.
List of tutorials are available to help you to learn more about the fundamentals of
using 3D GeoModeller for 3D geological modelling.
Using practical examples, the Introduction to the Tutorials will take you through
geological modelling step by step ... and lead you to the generation of fully coherent
3D geometrical models - built directly from your geology observations.
There are several case studies in the 3D GeoModeller tutorials. Each case study has
a number of tutorials that develop a geological model in stages. We have set up each
tutorial so that you could complete it as part of the case study or independently of the
previous tutorials. To complete it independently, simply load the starting point
project file for the tutorial.
Since we expect that most users will complete whole case studies, the later tutorials
of a case study have instructions with fewer details.

In a set of tutorials we cant assume that you wish to exhaustively carry out every
single step. We have provided solution project files for every stage of a case study. You
can choose whether to use the project file you have created or the equivalent solution
project file that we have provided as input for the next stage.
When you save your own work from the tutorials, we suggest that you save it with a
different project file name. This way, the data we provide is always available in its
original form.
When you are still learning to use 3D GeoModeller, and you need to specify a
previously created dataset or file for input, we recommend that you use the solution
dataset provided rather than the one you create. This will help to streamline your
first overview of the software. When you are more confident with 3D GeoModeller,
then try keeping your own data from stage to stage.
The solution project file provided for the end of each stage has the tutorial number of
the next stage. For example, to see what you should have at the end of tutorial 3 in a
case study, examine the input dataset for tutorial 4. We also provide a final solution
project file for each case study, called
Yes, simply unzip a fresh copy from the CD or download, or you can downlaod a copy
from our website. .

Most examples presented in the tutorials are synthetic, and do not use any real data.
To do the practical tutorials, you will find the necessary files in either:
<your installation directory>/prior_tutorial/
<your installation directory>/tutorial/
The files needed throughout the Tutorial are systematically stored within this simple
directory tree, making it easy to find the required elements. Feel free to experiment,
and undertake similar tutorials using your own project data.
We recommend that you make a back-up of the entire tutorial directory-tree, in order
to have a set of clean, un-corrupted 3D GeoModeller projects and files which exactly
match the Tutorial notes.
The tutorials in the Tutorial follow a logical progression. All of the data needed for
each of the studies is provided. It is recommended that a novice user work through
the lessons in the order provided, and so get an overall picture of the 3D
GeoModeller software. A more experienced user, however, can go directly to any
lesson of interest. For each lesson, a 3D GeoModeller project - which contains the
results of the accumulated work done in the preceding sequence of lessons - is
provided as the starting point for the new work to be done in any given lesson.
