History of
Originally known as Alder Grove, Colfax
began as a winter camping spot for
trappers and gold miners in the mid
1800s. They found a place along Bunch
Creek that was generally below the snow
line and retreated each Fall to that place
which became known as Illinoistown.
With the passage of time, and the
increase in gold mining activities, the
camp grew. It became a village with a
general store, saloons, freight company
and even a brothel.

was the eastern terminus of the railroad
when placement of the Golden Spike
into the rail bed at Promitory Point,
Utah signified the completion of the new
transcontinental railway.

the roots of those surviving generations
still living in the area. These pioneers built
a town with the railroad as its central focus
as it still is today. The first fruit trees were
imported from Oregon in 1852. This event
started the huge fruit and wine industry
that boomed through the 1950s.

An important part of this journey into

history is the role of the Nevada County
Narrow Gage Railway in the development
of the foothill economy. In the year 1876 a
railroad was built to carry machinery and
supplies to the very successful hard rock
mines in the Grass Valley and Nevada
City areas. It joined the transcontinental
rail line at Colfax. Old Never Come Never Go, as it was affectionately called,
carried freight as well as passengers from
1876 to 1942. Vestiges of the old rail bed
can still be seen along state route 174 and
you can still find the old small rail spikes,
if you are lucky, as you search where the
old track lay.

During the days of railroad construction

there was a large Chinese population
along with other railroad workers. Gold
mining became a much larger business
and attracted miners from all over the
world to the area and some stayed
and opened shops and entered other
business endeavors. They started schools
and churches. The early schools have
disappeared, replaced by more modern Robert Peers came to the area and

The golden history of

Rising Sun Mine
By Nancy Hagman

Before there was a high school on Ben

Taylor Road, there was a rich gold mine.
It was one thing to pick up nuggets from the
surface, but real miners knew the genuine
treasure laid in the mother lode - the gold
bearing quartz veins that ran deep into the
earth. The discovery of an outcropping rich
in quartz meant the area was worked by
arrastra - a grinding method from the old
world - in 1862.
The Rising Sun Mine and its acquisition of
the adjoining Big Oak Tree Mine, grew to
embrace on area over 600 acres.
Uren compares the mine to the Grass
Valley Mining District, famous for over
80 years of continuous deep mining and
a yield of about $200 million in gold. In
April of 1880, J.H. Bidwell purchased the
Rising Sun. A month into their ownership
they announced that the miners pay would
be reduced from $3 to $2.50 per day. The
hard-rockers immediately went on strike,

10 - SPRING 2015

and were victorious. However, by 1887,

the pumping equipment could not keep
the ground water abated and the whole
operation was forced to shut down.
Under new ownership of a consortium
of Colfax and Auburn businessmen,
the facility was brought back to life.
Nevertheless, the revitalized industry was
short lived. On Feb. 3, 1938, a head frame
snapped leaving three of the 14-man crew
underground. They were uninjured and
walked out to safety.
The mine never reopened; the rights
and its property were purchased by
John Wegmann in 1956. A portion of the
property, along with property from Grace
Hubley, was purchased in the late 1940s
by the school district and constructed
Colfax High School beginning in 1959. Who
knows, with todays technology in robotic
drilling techniques, someday, someone,
may again reap the benefits of the gold in
them thar hills.

GOLD PANNING
California has a long and storied history
when it comes to gold mining. Since the
first nuggets were discovered at Sutters
Mill in 1848, miners have flocked to the
Sierra Nevada area to uncover their
fortunes. If you happen to catch a case
of gold fever, you can still get your hands
wet gold panning in Colfax. Its a great
activity to get out there and do something
a little bit different thats not too expensive
and its a lot of fun, says Heather Willis,
owner and manager of Pioneer Mining
Supplies in Auburn.
According to Willis, there are multiple
locations off of Weimar Cross Rd. in the
Colfax area open to the public. Bear River
Campground is a free use area, you dont
have to get a permit to pan or sluice, says
Willis. If you go off of the other side of
Weimar Cross you can go to Ponderosa or
Yankee Jims.
There are several different methods miners
can employ, although most opt for the
tried and true panning method, the set up
for which will only set you back between
$20 and $25.

FRUIT GROWERS ASSOCIATION

Fruit growing, dating back to Gold Rush
days, prospered in the foothills in the
Colfax vicinity for a century, from the
1850s to the 1950s. On Colfaxs South
Auburn Street is the former Cortopassi
Winery, established in 1914 to take
advantage of the horseless carriages
passing through town on the fine new
coast-to-coast highway.

Completion of the transcontinental

railroad in 1869 made possible the export
of apple and pear crops to hungry Eastern
markets. Still standing, fruit packing sheds
next to the rail lines hummed with activity
for decades, until a disastrous pear blight
in 1954 doomed the industry.

Narrow Gauge passengers until 1942 and
Southern Pacific passengers until 1971. The
recently restored Depot now serves AMTRAK
travelers, with a waiting room and Colfax

With the blossoming of foothill fruit growers

in the 1880s, Colfax Fruit Sheds buzzed with
activity, packing pears, peaches, grapes and
apples from local and Nevada County growers,
and shipping on Southern Pacific for points
east. An icing platform for the perishable fruit
operated here from 1926-1950s.

The Colfax Hotel, formerly the Gillen Hotel,

was built by an ex-Southern Pacific conductor
to serve the rails and other travelers. For
its 1903 grand opening, San Francisco
dignitaries came by special train to tour its
56 rooms and restaurant. Later, the adjacent
Gillen Pavilion encouraged dancing and
public entertainment. The hotel is currently
undergoing restoration.

Illionoistown - Clay Lodge, #51

161 Years in Colfax
In the 1850s, a Trading Post was the principal
business and gathering place in the area known as
Alder Grove.
A small group of miners identifying themselves as
brother Masons from Illinois requested a dispensation
from the Grand Lodge of California Masons in
Sacramento to form a Lodge at Alder Grove.
They were granted a Charter for Illinoistown
Lodge No. 51, F. & A. M. in 1854 and
subsequently Alder Grove and surrounding area,
including Colfax, became known as Illinoistown.

Colfax Railroad Days is an annual

community event that celebrates the
history and continuing role railroads play
today in moving passengers and freight in
our Placer County region. This year we are
celebrating Colfaxs 150th Birthday.

There is always plenty of railroad

memorabilia, art and artifacts and modern
train equipment to satisfy the appetites of
most rail fans at the Colfax Railroad Days.

This is a wonderfully educational and

entertaining family experience that brings
nearly every aspect of railroading close up
to the residents ofNorthern California.

Docents are on hand to explain how the

machinery performs its monumental task
of keeping the Donner Pass route open to
rail traffic during winter storms.

Learn about the huge specialized train

equipment that railroaders use to keep
the tracks clear of heavy snowfall in the
winter and keep the trains moving.

On a smaller scale, is the miniature railroad

set up at the Sierra Vista Community
Center by Sacramento Valley Live
Steamers Railroad Club whose members
will offer free rides on the train.

Union Pacific usually provides its own

equipment for Railroad Days and visitors

Green Machine
crab feed
By Roxie Rice

The eighth annual Green Machine Crab

Feed took place at the Sierra Vista
Community Center March 14 with more
than 200 benevolent and hungry members
of the community supporting the cause.
The Green Machine, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation established by parents,
coaches and community members
dedicated to helping youth sports and
academic groups in the Colfax area, is

athletes and scholars.

youth academics and sports.

Smaller teams and clubs that have a difficult
time fundraising on their own, received
help from the Green Machine Foundation
to organize and run the crab feed.
Seven small teams and clubs from Colfax
High School joined together to create
one fundraising event to benefit their
individual groups.

baseball and the Green Machine board

Being part of the Green Machine and
watching them grow from supporting two
clubs to now supporting a total of six, is
an incredible experience. Green Machine
treasurer Kristie Brothers said. Tickets
were sold out in two weeks. We could
have easily doubled our attendance if we
had the room. The support of the Colfax
community is an amazing blessing.

In the beginning, the Green Machine
saved up and purchased a wrestling mat
for the high school, McGuire said. We
then helped with a new batting cage. We
look forward to helping as many groups as
possible in the coming years.
