    Lesson Plan: Informal Listening


    Objective:
    Students will be able to recognize (2+2+2+3) rhythm from listening example as the same rhythm used in one of the
    songs on their concert program. They will demonstrate a concrete response using puzzle piece cards. Students will
    perform concert pieces with accompaniments they compose themselves.

    Materials:
    CD of Dave Brubeck, Take Five, Blue Rondo a la Turk
    Six sets of puzzle piece cards
    Sheet music to Niska Banja

    Setup:
    Audio equipment ready with CD cued to appropriate track
    Remote accessible to teaching position at start of class
    Video equipment in position with tape cued
    Cards in six envelopes on piano

    Introduce rhythm as another building block of music, like solfege.
    Using solfege, sing short excerpt of familiar song in straight quarter notes
    Using rhythmic syllables, chant rhythm of familiar song
    Make connection that you can tell all these things about a piece without even seeing the music. Good job!
    Play first 15 seconds of Take Fivecan they find pulse? How many heart rhythms in each measure? How
    can they tell?
    Play first 15 seconds of Blue Rondo a la Turk.
    Ask students to describe what they noticed about the piece (no parameters).
    Ask students to try to find steady pulse with second hearing.
    Play excerpt.
    Can they identify the difficulty in finding steady pulse?
    Pass out puzzle pieces to each half-row.
    In groups of existing half-rows, ask students to arrange pieces in order.
    Play excerpt two or three times, depending on response.
    Compare responses visually and verbally. Groups should describe how/why they arranged pieces in
    particular order.
    Listen to same excerpt of piece. Do the flash cards help to find the pulse?
    Can they think of a song theyre singing that starts with the same pulse as Blue Rondo a la Turk?
    Solicit answers.
    Teacher will not provide answer if its not given. Ask students to think over the next few days as they sing
    through their pieces. This will keep them thinking about the problem.
    In half rows, have groups come up with rhythm pattern that fits with a familiar choir song
    What do we need to know to get started?
    a. Will need to fit repeating pattern within time signature
    Parameters: everyone needs to participate; group needs to have both singers and drummers.
    Groups can get drums when theyve shown they have a rhythm that fits with the heart rhythms of the piece.
    Concert-ready performances to accompaniment
    If time, layer accompaniments to pieces while rest of choir sings
